Three Years Ago

It had been a cold winter and everyone had been preparing for Christmas. Nothing was any different than what it normally was and to be fair, it was quite boring. I was planning a nice dinner for my mother but she phoned me saying she had to decline. I was a little disappointed but I forgave her. It wasn't her fault that she worked for the government. But her phone call had me on the edge. Her voice had seemed raspy, lile she was strained. Little did I know that was the last time I would ever hear her voice. Anyway, I carried on making the dinner for myself when I found a rather strange letter lodged in a crack in the wall. I pulled it out.

Dear Amber,

Whenever you get to read this letter I hope you are alright. I want you to know I love you and that you will always be loved. I did not want to leave you, and I did everything I could to save you. But as you know my efforts were in vain. There will always be a place for you in my heart. Please do not think me an arrogant mother when I would rather me than you. You must come to realize that you are strong by yourself my little rabbit. And I need you to be strong now. With all the love in my heart, I wish you the best of luck. And don't ever forget, I  love you

Yours,
Mother

I lunged for the telephone. I dialled her number and pressed the call button. It went straight to voice mail and I cursed. Without thinking I threw the phone at our wall and fell to my knees. What was I supposed to do? How was I supposed to survive.

I scrambled to the door. Snow pelted at me as I ran into the wind. I had no bloody clue where I was going, but I had to go somewhere. I ran up my lane and to the gas station. I pushed open the door. But no one was there. I was starting to panic. My eyes flicked to a red pick up truck in one of the rows.

I had no other option.

I pelted to the car and to my surprise the door was open with the ignition in. I had no idea how to drive a car. I sat in the seat and pulled up the break. The car started to roll backwards. I pressed down on one of the pedals and the car shot forward. Thank fucking god that this was an automatic. I soon got the hang of the pedals. The right one was start and the other stop. Quite easy.

To my surprise the highway was empty. I mean empty. I shook my head. So I just got a cryptic letter from my mother and now everyone has just disappeared. This has to be linked. But to what?

And what did my mum mean when she said. 'I did everything to save you'? But whatever it was,

I was going to find out.
