Chapter 2
Simon's pov
"Simon Blair?" My first hour teacher said, taking roll for the class. I raised my hand sheepishly, not liking the way some kids looked at me with a frown. My split lip was still healing and the bruises on my face were ugly yellow and blue colors. I tried to cover them up with some makeup my mom had in the bathroom but her skin tone wasn't the same as mine and the makeup didn't even help.
"Sarah Lee?"
"Here, Sir."
I didn't like how this teacher wouldn't take role in alphabetical order. He'd jump around with names, always catching me off guard when he called my name. He also said our first and last names in a bored, drawled out voice. My heart soon calmed after I was marked as present on the attendance sheet. I still felt like people were staring at me and when I looked up I was right. Some where laughing with their friends as they pointed at me then continued to watch their phones. My heart instantly dropping.
I forgot Henry and his grouped filmed when they beat me up. Everyone in the school probably has the video by now. If I went to a teacher about this they'd just laugh at me or say they'd "handle it" and by that they mean do nothing. The signs on the walls say "No Bullying" but the students and staff say otherwise. They only have the posters up to get funding from the state.
"Remington Leonardo?"
"It's Rem." A low voice said from a few seats ahead of me.
"Glad you could finally join us Remington." The teacher said sarcastically and went to the next student.
"Wow, Rem is actually here today." I heard someone whisper behind me. "Do you think that was his last warning for skipping?"
"Nah, he always gets off the hook for skipping. He's probably only here because of Charlie."
"Charlie missed half the school year already, where was he anyways?"
"I'd appreciate if you'd stop talking about me and my friend." A low voice cut them off. My eyes widening when I glanced over to see Rem standing next to me, towering over the other stupids behind me.
"S-sorry." One said, everyone in the room falling silent as the teacher typed away at their computer, choosing to ignore the situation happening right in front of him.
Rem stayed there for a moment, probably fixing them with one of his killer glares before he slowly turned on his black Dr. Martens and stalked back to his seat. I kept my head down like normal, staring at my open notebook. Today isn't the day for my heart, it now racing as I anxiously sank in my seat.
Class resumed like normal, the teacher calling on random students to answer questions. I wasn't chosen which I was grateful for. My day going by slowly but surly, no one bothering me. I felt myself smile slightly at this, liking how I didn't even see Henry and his goons today. Maybe today is a good day.
~~~~~
I hurried into the empty library, heading to my spot with a smile. Once I made it to my spot I slid my headphones in and began to read. I didn't even notice when it was time to go, my mind too caught up in my book. The loud blare of the bell through my earbuds reminded me that I was late.
Scrambling to my feet I shoved my book into my bag and my earbuds away. Hurrying out the doors I moved as fast as my legs could go, yelping when a hand on my hood stopped me. I gagged because if he pressure around my neck as I was dragged into a bathroom. Hitting the ground with a small cry I looked up at Henry, Jake, and Kevin.
"Long time no see, bitch boy." Henry spat making me flinch as I slowly sat up.
"I-I'm late." I said softly, hoping that they would just let me go but I'm not that lucky.
"You think we'd let you go that easily? We need to give you some new bruises, maybe break a few bones..." Kevin laughed, punching me in the face. I felt blood gush from my nose instantly when he pulled away. I cried out, hand flying to my face as I held my nose. It was too soon to tell if it was broken or not but it hurt enough to believe it was.
"P-please don't." I sobbed, watching them laugh at me through blurry eyes. One pulling out their phone to record my pain.
"Don't worry, we'll make this fast."
~~~~~
It felt like I had broken ribs as I limped up the stairs of my house and unlocked the door, locking it behind me. Whimpering in pain, tears sliding down my face freely like the blood sliding into my sleeve I had pressed against my nose. My eyes burning and blurry as I limped over to the wash, kicking my shoes off.
I sobbed as I slowly pulled my hoody off of my frail body. Letting my arms drop when I could, easing the searing pain only in the slightest. Hunching over against the wall I coughed up some blood, hoping I wasn't bleeding internally and the blood was from my mouth. Gritting my teeth I got my pants off, moving through the pain. It hurt so badly I felt like I'm going to pass out. Ever single movement had me crying even harder.
Stumbling into the bathroom I got into the shower, cleaning off the blood and saw my black and blue stomach. All of this was a very clear sign some of my ribs were fractured. Once I was clean I dried off, that part was extremely difficult but I managed. Wrapping a big towel around me I made it to the kitchen without passing out. Gasping when I felt my knees go weak. Gripping the counter top tightly, keeping myself up as I got myself a cup of water and a bag of frozen peas that we've had in our freezer since I can remember. Rinsing my mouth out with the water I took the maximum amount of painkillers someone could take in one day which was 6 pills.
I downed the glass of water before slowly and carefully making it to my bedroom, shutting the door behind me. Leaning against the door I dropped my towel, I manager to get some boxers on. Laying in bed I put the bag of frozen peas on my stomach, flinching at the cold but relaxed when it numbed some of the pain. More tears coming like they always do, my body not being able to take the pain as I passed out. The pills might've played a part in it but I didn't mind. I could escape the pain for a bit.
~~~~~
When I woke up it was early morning meaning I slept for about 13 hours straight. The bag of peas no longer frozen, my mouth was extremely dry, and my stomach rumbled for food.
Sighing softly I slowly sat up, whimpering in pain as I climbed out of bed, leaning against the wall as I took the defrosted peas with me into the kitchen. Chugging two glasses of water I scanned through the very empty fridge. Pulling out a container of noodles I made a few days ago I popped them into the microwave. The pain seemed to have worn down to a very uncomfortable and unpleasant ache that swept through my body, making me flinch every so often.
When my food was done I stumbled back to my room with a new frozen bag of peas, my food, and another cup of water. If it wasn't the weekend I don't think I would even go into school today. I can barely stand let alone go through another beating. I had to skip the rest of school yesterday because I just didn't wanna stick around. Sitting in bed I ate my food and pressed the frozen peas to my stomach.
The noddles sat in my belly heavily making me feel slightly sick but I ignored that feeling. Drinking the rest of my water I laid back down, staring up at my ceiling as I let myself relax and drift off to sleep again.
~~~~~
When I woke up it was noon, another 5 hours wasted I guess. Everything still hurt but I gritted my teeth as I got my phone and connected it to my neighbors WiFi. They were an old couple, probably in their 60's or 70's. They didn't mind that I used their WiFi, just as long as I didn't "use it all" which would be impossible but I didn't tell them that.
My phone wasn't the best, some off brand track phone that could barely use any apps besides YouTube and Spotify. I didn't mind though, it's better than nothing and I got it for free.
Pulling my YouTube up I pushed on the first music video I saw and sighed. Willing myself to just lay there and recover from the beating. It was one of the worse ones so far, especially considering I definitely had some fractious. Mom normally leaves some money on the counter on Sundays so I'll have to go to the store and get some food. That's going to be a very long process because I can barely walk.
"Ugh." I grumped, getting up to get the other frozen bag of peas. My legs shaking uncontrollably under me as I limped into the kitchen.
"The school called, said you skipped yesterday." Someone said making me flinch and look up. Mom sat at the table with a cigarette to her lips and and a glass of whiskey in her other hand.
"Hi, mom." I mumbled, looking down at my bruised body.
"Why'd you skip, kid?" She snapped, obviously drunk as she glared at me, ignoring all of my bruises.
"S-some kids jumped me... I-I didn't feel well after." I said softly. Watching her down the glass of whiskey. And put her cigarette out in the ashtray.
"You can't even stand up for yourself. Pathetic just like your father." She spat, standing up on her red stilettos and threw a small pile of cash on the table. "Clean yourself up and the house, I'm having someone over later. Behave." She said cooly before leaving, slamming the door behind her.
"Love you too, mom." I mumbled, feeling my heart squeeze painfully in my chest. There's never a greeting or a goodbye from her every time she is around. All I ever wanted was a "love you" or a "how are you" from her but I'll never get that. She'll always hate me because of my dad. Wiping the single tear that slid down my face I grabbed the money and made my way back to my room.
With a lot of difficulty and pain I got dressed and headed out of the house. The walk to the store took longer than normal and once there I got a basket and counted the money mom gave me. $52.37, more than what she normally gives me. I got bread, peanut butter, jelly, noodles, rice, canned soup, and I even found some discounted frozen pizza which was a score.
I smiled at my good find, getting some toiletries that were desperately needed like soap and shampoo. Once all done I limped to the register and began to check out.
"$34.50 today." The women said with a smile.
I nodded, giving her the money before going on my way. Getting the bags home was extremely painful because it was heavy and I had to carry it two miles. With the limp and my bruises it made it a slow, painful experience. A migraine already began to blur my mind as I walked, getting home right when it began to rain.
Hurrying as fast as I could I put all the bags on the counter and began putting everything away. It wasn't much but it would last me awhile. Considering I had a little left over I put it into my savings box which at the moment had $178, most of it was loose change I found, dimes and nickels mostly. It was something at leasts, something to fall back on if something happens. I always had this fear that mom would kick me out or we'd loose the house but ever month the utilities and mortgage was paid. Mom never told me about what she does when she's out. She only sleeps here maybe once a month, complains about how we don't have any food before she leaves and didn't come back ever Sunday to give me money.
I cleaned up a bit before making myself a bowl of soup before going back to my room for the rest of the day and night. Knowing mom and the person she'll bring over is someone she's been staying with and then they'll probably get into a screaming match, have loud sex, drink until they pass out, and then leave early in the morning. It's the same thing ever time and I honestly wish I had somewhere to go so I didn't have to listen to them but I didn't. No friends, no car, no bike, and because it was raining and I was hurt I didn't feel like catching a cold as well.
~~~~~
"You're a fucking bitch!" The man yelled making me flinch.
"Fuck you, you bastard!" Mom screamed back, throwing something that hit the wall.
There was more screaming and throwing things before there was loud moaning. I turned the volume up on my music and hoped that they won't be long. Pulling my blanket over my head I squeezed my eyes shut and willed myself to sleep, hoping things would be better tomorrow.
