Chapter 7

"Kazuki?!"

I continued calling his name as I searched for him.

I hated this forest. It was a maze in here and I don't even know where I am. Doesn't help that he had the map with him too.

As I searched for him, I started getting lost in my thoughts. I couldn't stop thinking about what Naruto, Ino, and Kiba were all doing right now with their teams and if they were having a better time than I am.

As I got lost in my thoughts, I started thinking about how Naruto had a crush on Sakura and how I didn't like that.

What did Sakura have that I didn't?

I don't hate her, but I can't deny that I'm envious of her. Envious of the fact that she got to be put on a team with him.

I also wish she didn't act weird around me just because of my friendship with Ino.

Why did I have to have these mixed feelings toward her? I miss the old days when Sakura, Ino, and I were all friends and played together as children.

I broke out of my thoughts when I saw movement in the distance.

"Kazuki?!"

I ran even faster than I already was towards that spot.

"Kaori? Is that you?"

I sighed with relief when I recognized his voice and then saw him standing on the ground.

I jumped off the tree to meet up with him.

"Did you find the scroll?" I asked.

He put his hand in his pocket, then pulled the scroll out. Hhe tossed it to me and I caught it, putting it back inside my pouch.

I suddenly felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.

"How did you get it back?"

"That coyote lost interest when I pretended to stop chasing after it. He dropped it on the ground and I grabbed it quickly before it could react," He replied. "Where's Ginji?"

I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly. "We kind of uh, split up out of anger,"

"What?!" He exclaimed. "You guys split up?!"

"You're the one to talk," I retorted. "You ran off without a word and left us behind,"

He immediately got silent and looked off to the side. "I guess you're right. I'm sorry. I just got really caught up with trying to get that scroll back so we don't fail,"

I let it go and realized I had to let go of the anger I had toward Ginji as well. He was stressed for the same reason after all.

"Let's find him,"

He nodded and we jumped back up onto the tree and started running around to find Ginji.

He used the map to figure out where we were as we looked around for him.

"Kaori?! Kazuki?!"

We both heard his voice in the distance and ran to where we heard it.

I didn't realize how fast I was going until I collided with something and fell off the tree.

I cursed under my breath, gripping my left wrist in pain. It didn't feel like I broke it, but it's definitely gonna bruise later.

"Ouch, damnit. What was that?" A voice spoke.

I looked up at the voice and saw it was Ginji.

"Are you two okay?" Kazuki asked and jumped down to check on us.

Ginji looked even more irritated as he looked down at his wrist and looked back up at me.

"You need to watch where you're going," He huffed.

I rolled my eyes. "You're the one who ran into me,"

I got up off the ground quickly, wincing at the pain that shot up my arm. I narrowed my eyes at him and used my uninjured arm to show him the scroll.

"You should be grateful, Ginji," I raised my voice. "I found the scroll just so you know, and the reason I was distracted is because I was looking for your ungrateful self!"

He scoffed.

"Oh yeah? Try not to lose the scroll this time, Kaori,"

"You little-!"

"Guys, stop!" Kazuki shouted at us.

Ginji and I turned our heads to her in surprise. He doesn't seem like the type who snaps very often and his tone was very different compared to how he normally was.

"But-"

"Quiet, Ginji," He cut him off. "You two need to stop arguing. We found the scroll, so what's the problem here? We're losing focus on the task at hand. We have to find this house and deliver the scroll so we don't get sent back to the academy,"

Ginji muttered something and he looked over at him. He immediately shut up.

"So can we please just get out of here now?" He asked, looking at the both of us.

Ginji and I nodded.

"Great," He sighed. "Now let me look at the map and figure out where we are. It's already past noon,"

Ginji and I stayed silent as he looked at the map.

It's clear that Ginji and I were way too similar to the point where we may butt heads in the future.

Kazuki finally figured out how to get us back on the right path, so we followed his lead silently. I just wanted this test to be over with.

"How far is our destination?" I asked, breaking the silence.

"Not that far. I was able to figure out a shortcut to get us there sooner. If I'm correct, we'll get there by nightfall," Kazuki replied. "I realized the original path that Miyako-Sensei had marked on there would've taken us longer."

I nodded in response. He seemed to have a better sense of direction than Ginji and I. That'll definitely become handy later on.

As we made our way to this house, I was now wondering what was going to happen once we got there and who this friend of Miyako-Sensei was.
