I didn't have to wait long to see Sean's car pull up in front of the library. I quickly grab my things and hop in, all the while wondering how he knew where I was.
I clear my throat awkwardly once I'm comfortable seated in front, an attempt to catch his attention or at least a sign of acknowledgement from him.
But there was none, his eyes stayed narrowed and fixed at the stairs of the library where I once sat.
I notice his tight grip on the steering wheel, his tousled hair and white shirt unbuttoned at the top, with his tie left sagging below. He looks frustrated about something, I don't know what but I'm guessing it has something to do with his job. Being the sole heir to a multimillion company must be really tiring.
I look a little longer and notice the way the sunlight reflects in his eyes, making the usual brown colour turn a beautiful shade of gold. I sigh and quickly look away.
Right now I'm regretting why I didn't call a taxi.
"How did you know I was at the library?" I ask, breaking the silence in the car.
And for the first time since I entered his car, he turns his head to face me. His eyes capture mine and I feel a shiver travel down my spine at his stare. But then he breaks the eye contact, still not saying a word, starts the car and drives off.
I sigh and turn to face the window, watching the street lights pass by. I still haven't gotten a reply from Scott nor Laura, and it bothers me.
I just hope my best friend is okay and that my boyfriend is as good as he seems.
"Where are you taking me?" I ask, seeing that we just drove past my building, but he ignores me and keeps on driving.
A few more minutes passes by before the car stops and I'm faced with the all too familiar scenery. Why did he bring me here?
Sean gets out and opens the door for me, he offers a hand to help me out but I shake my head and climb out myself. I don't think I can trust myself to not do anything stupid if he makes skin contact with.
He ignores me and goes to sit down on the grass covered ground, with his legs spread wide, knees propped up with hands placed on top of them.
I stand rooted by the side of the car.
"Why did you bring me here?"
Memories of my birthday night flashed in my mind. The place still looks as wonderful as it did; this is were the trouble began.
"Won't you sit down?" He asks.
I look down at my attire, a short black and white poker dotted flair skirt and a black long sleeved top.
"I'm okay standing." I reply. Can't risk grass stains on my white.
Sean hisses, gets up and walks towards me. He stops when he is just an arm length away.
"What are you do—" I try to ask but I'm swept off my feet and carried bridal style by Sean.
"Stop put me—" I try to say, but I'm being placed on the ground before I can finish my statement.
I hiss and pull my skirt a little further down to cover my legs better, while Sean takes a sit beside me.
"Why did you bring me here?"
He turns to face me and smiles faintly. "I felt like."
A drop of rain falls on my cheek, I look up and see the darkening clouds. The sky would pour any minute now.
"Do you also feel like taking me home? It'd rain soon."
His eyes flicker with amusement just before starts laughing, What's so funny about it raining?
"Why are you laughing?" I ask.
"You worry too much." He chuckles.
I gasp and swat his chest playfully but he captures my hand before I can pull away, and slowly pulls me to his side. Before I can register what's happening, I'm rolling and laughing my butt off from the Sean's mastermind tickles.
I try to roll out of his hold but to no avail. He is straddling me, one hand holding both my hands- above my head-, put to the ground while the other tickled me along my ribs. I am aware of how awkward and inappropriate our current position is, but I'm laughing too hard to do anything about it.
Soon and just as expected, the cloud begins to cry.
"Stop!" I yell in between laughs. "I'm wet!" I yell again, noticing my now clingy clothes.
Sean stops laughing and faces me with a sudden serious expression. His eyes flicker with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" I question.
"You said you're wet."
"Cause I am." I motion a hand to my now soaked attire. "Surely you aren't blind."
He runs his palm over his face and sighs.
"You're too innocent for your own good."
"You say that like it's a bad thing."
He shakes his head and gets up, before extending a hand to help me off the ground. I take his hand and get up, steadying myself on my feet before I let go of his hand.
"We should really get going, we're soaked and I'm sure you have better things to take care of?"
"You're the one that called. Are you saying that I shouldn't have come to your aid?"
I gasp.
"Of course not," I pause. "Was just surprised...I didn't expect you to actually come."
He doesn't reply, but bows his head and keeps walking towards the car. I stop for a while and watch his retreating form, then shake my head and run to catch up with him.
"How's Scott?" He asks suddenly, the moment I'm at his side.
"He's... Good." And hasn't replied the many messages I sent him.
"I'm so happy for the two of you."
I feel a light ache in my heart at hearing his words. It was light, but painful enough for me to draw a hand to my chest.
'Kat, you should be happy. He's rooting for you two' I tell myself.
But that didn't make the ache go away.
"I uhm... So how's everything going on in your life?" I ask, an attempt to change the topic.
He stops, then turns to face me. He grabs my arm and swiftly brings me to his chest. He uses his other hand to tilt my chin up so that I face him, while drawing small circles on my cheek with his thumb. His eyes brown eyes captured mine, showing emotions of which I could and could not understand.
I felt safe in his arms and it hurt me to admit it.
"I just lost the girl of my dreams," he says, his eyes flicker with sadness and hurt,"how do you think I'm doing?"
I gasp and pull out of his grip, "No!" I shake my head, "no!" I repeat again.
"You do not get to say stupid romantic things like that!" I yell and hit his chest, he doesn't stop me.
"You're so confusing!"
Hit!
"You pop up and disappear whenever you like! And you expect me to wait for you?"
Another hit!
"What do you take me for?"
Hit!!
"You shouldn't have left, we could've talked things out..." I hit him again then collapse sobbing into chest, he hugs me tighter.
"I know I'm confusing...I was confused but I'm not anymore. I never wanted to fall for you but I did, you charmed me with your stupid jokes that only you think is funny, your smart talk and your beauty... Both in and out."
As I listen to him talk, I couldn't help but think how romantic it was; us, under the rain, his arms wrapped around my waist. Our clothes wet and clingy so it feels like we are both bare.
It feels right and wrong at the same time.
"I lo-like you Kat, a lot." He adds in, his voice low and sweet.
"And I can't be just your friend."
I stop and stare up at him, my heart beat quickening up at each passing second as I try so hard to stop the tears that threatened to fall.
"I liked you Sean..." I croak out, "a lot, for a very long time I've done nothing but like you but —"
"I know I fucked up the first time, but I know what I want now and it's you."
I lean out a little and shake my head in disbelief, "I have a boyfriend."
"Scott?" He says with disdain, "break up with him."
"Are you crazy!" I yell, "He's been everything that you're not to me."
I remember Scott's conversation early this morning and
frown.
"Just take me home."
I know, Sean is crazy for making such a demand. But is it for Kat's own good?
Who do you prefer Kat with? Scott or Sean?
