~16~

We drove off with complete silence in the car, not an icy silence but a somewhat comfortable one. I managed to steal a few glances at Scott without him noticing. His eyes were fixed on the road and his fingers tapped the steering wheel most likely absentmindedly.

I was really nervous and I kept on fidgeting in my seat while playing with my fingers that were now all sweaty.

I really don't understand why I was so nervous, it was just a date. Then again as funny and as untrue as it may sound, I haven't been on much dates, in fact I have nearly zero dating experience.

No I wasn't socially awkward and never got asked out, it was the complete opposite. But I always turned them down, its just that I usually felt awkward being alone with a guy.

Something about me plus a boy plus a date equals recipe for disaster.

"Are you nervous?" Scott asked, his eyes fixed on me.

"Pft no. Why'd you think that?"

"You keep doing that thing with your hands," he said, as his eyes darted from my hand back to my face.

I immediately stopped playing with my fingers and rested my palm flat on my lap.

I looked at him and smiled sheepishly, he returned the smile. It was then I realised that the car had come to halt in front of a plain white building. It was isolated but looking far I noticed a few distant houses by the left.

"Where are we?" I asked looking out the window.

"Somewhere."

"Somewhere?" I asked, my voice alarming. I don't know if I should be bothered by his vague response.

"Don't worry you're in safe hands," he assured, while smirking.

At least Laura knows where he lives I thought.

He reached for my door and helped me out the car and we both walked towards the house.

The inside of the house was white as well, giving it a modern look. The only other colour I could notice was beige and the brown colour from the wooden frame of the landscape paintings that hung on the wall.

"So you brought me here to cook for me?" I asked, clearly curious as to where he was going with this.

"I wish but...let's just say I'm a grandmaster chef." He chuckled, I laughed along with him.

"I want to show you something," he said, as he took my hand and stirred me away from the living room.

He led towards a transparent door that led to the patio of the house. There was a table already set out for two and looking out, I had a clear view of the beach outside. The beach water sparkled under the moonlight, giving it a fine blue colouring.

I felt my lips involuntarily etch up to form a wide smile. It was a beautiful scenery but he really shouldn't have gone through the stress.

"Its beautiful," I say and turn to face Scott that was smiling widely at my reaction.

"But you really shouldn't have. A little too much?"

"No its not. You deserve much more love."

I smiled at his reply.
He pulled my chair out for me and pushed it in when I sat down.

As soon as he took his seat, a man in a waiters uniform appeared carrying a bottle of wine and two glasses on a silver tray. He looked like he was in his late twenties and had thick long black hair that was tied to form a ponytail.

He dropped the tray on the table.
"Good evening. My name is Matthew and I'll be your waiter for the night," he said, a wide smile on his lips.

"So I'll be right back with your appetizer," he added before leaving.

"So this is your family's beach house?" I asked once Mathew left.

Scott poured wine into my glass and I muttered a thank you before taking a sip. It was good wine.

"Yes it is." He finally answered
"So tell me something about you I don't know."

I nearly choked on my drink when I heard those words. It was the exact same questions Sean had asked when we were in our little 'birthday getaway'.
Why is this world cruel to me?

I looked up from the wine glass that I had been absentmindedly staring at to face a confused looking Scott.

"You don't like it?" he asked concerned.

"Oh no! its great wine. Was just thinking of what to say," I smiled apologetically, "I'm really bad at this. How about you tell me something about yourself first."

"Ok then," he smiled back, "Scott Williams, 20, college student majoring in Business Administration, plays tennis and of course a stalker."

I laughed off his last statement.

"Ok Katrina Darren,18, college freshman, also majoring in Business Administration, does not play tennis but has a keen interest in football and spends free time reading novels."

"Ooh a sports girl,I like that. So what's your favourite football club?" he paused, tapped his chin, "you in it for the players or the game?"

I chuckled, "Barcelona fan and both. They have fine players." I winked.

He smiled, "Now we my friend are going to get along pretty well."

"You a fan too?"

"Nay. I'm more of a Liverpool guy," he smirked.

Just then my phone beeped in my purse and I reluctantly fished it out to check the message. I didn't want to seem rude by texting but then again it could be Laura or maybe something important came up.

My eyes froze on the screen in front of me and my lips formed a small frown involuntarily.

Sean,
Hey.

Why was he making contact with me now? I thought we agreed to put everything behind us.
I had mixed feelings just by reading the simple message that held so many things to it.

I would love to say I felt only anger but I didn't. I felt both happiness and anger.
Weird huh?

I looked away from the screen to see Scott looking at me, I lied that it was Laura texting to see how the date was going and I apologised for the distraction. I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt as the lie slipped out my mouth.

I could always ignore the text but I did the exact opposite and sent a reply.

Me,
Hey.

Sean,
Can we talk?

His reply came almost immediately.

Me,
About?

So now he wants to talk? whatever it was could wait.

Sean,
I'm coming over.

Me,
Don't. I'm not home.

Sean,
Where are you? I can come and meet you there.

Me,
I'm kind of busy.

Sean,
Busy?

I read his last message and chose to ignore it. Better to leave him on edge like he did to me.

"I'm sorry." I apologised to Scott.

"Its okay. After all she needs to check up on her little girl," he winked, I smiled, my chest still heavy from the lie I told.

We talked about random things while eating each meal Mathew brought to us. I give whoever the cook is credit for the food cause it was really good.

After the meal, he took my hand in his and we walked hand in hand towards the beach.

"That reminds me, we're moving out to our new place this Sunday."

"We?" His face paled.

"We as in Laura and I."

"Oh for a second there I thought 'we' meant you and some guy."

I place my hand on my chest for dramatical effect, threw my head back and laughed hard.

I had earlier pulled off my heels back at the house and was now barefooted, so I feel the fine sand between my toes. The night wind flapped my hair gently against face and I kept shifting the stray strands behind my ears.

"So um you could come over if you want. Laura's inviting a few friends over so she asked me to invite you."

His silence was making me nervous and I thought maybe just maybe inviting him over seemed too soon?

"Its okay if you can't com-" I begin but he stops me.

"No I'd love to come, just send me the address and I'd be there." He added with a smile.

"Alright." I smiled back.

And so the rest of the night we walked and played like little children on beach and even made some sand castles and some role play. Where I was the damsel in distress and he was my night in shinning armor.

It felt good to act like a kid again; young, carefree and happy.

He drove me home around ten thirty that night and we sat inside his car that was parked in front of my house, both of us quiet and unsure of what next to do.

"Goodnight." I finally say breaking the silence.

"Goodnight."

We were quiet for a while, just staring at each other in silence. I could've sworn he was going to kiss me but he surprised me when he leaned in and placed a light peck on my forehead. I smiled at him and he smiled back before he got out to hold out the door for me.

I uttered a thank you then walked out towards the front door of my house then turned back to wave him a final goodbye. He was watching me while leaning casually on the body of the car, he waved back before entering his car and driving off into the night.
