I drove home and got there
around five thirty in the evening. I was taken aback by the number of cars on our driveway.
Almost as if they were throwing a party.
I was relieved when I saw my normal parking space was free. I hurriedly parked my car and got out.
As soon as I walked into the house, I was greeted with the sound of classical music, the familiar faces of my extended family members and a few people I had no idea whom they were.
They were all dressed in exquisite dinner gowns and suits. They really went overboard. Looking down at myself I really felt completely underdressed for the occasion. In fact I wasn't dressed for it at all . I had on plain jeans, a shirt and matching sneakers.
Don't blame me, I was hoping to just come home then go straight to my room.
They really were throwing a party but what was the occasion?
I managed to navigate my way through the crowd. Every now and then I'd be dragged by a family member asking me about my welfare and telling about how big I've gotten since they last saw me.
I was really sick of it cause honestly most of them were present at my birthday celebration which wasn't so long ago.
So when they say 'you've gotten so big', I translate it to 'you've put on a lot of weight '.
I searched the crowd for any sign of my mother or sister but I didn't either of them.
I had no other choice but to turn to my last resort, my brother.
I marched up the stairs then down the hall in the direction to his room. On getting there I opened the door without knocking.
He too was all dressed up but didn't wear a suit like everyone else did. He had on a white shirt and black trousers, his tie loosely hung round his neck and his hair was combed back. At least he put in some effort than normal.
My brother had always been good looking even without trying. With his chiseled jaw, tall lean yet muscular body and shinny brown hair. Not that I'll ever tell him that. It'll just increase the size of his ego. Besides we hardly talk except when he needed my help.
We were closer when we were little but suddenly all that changed as we grew.
"What's going on?" I ask, hands on my hips.
"We're having an evening party."
He answers, his eyes not once leaving his laptop screen.
"Mhmm?" I pushed further. He pretty must just stated the obvious.
"With Janet's fiancé."
Fiancé?
"Mark?"
"Yeah that guy," he says nonchalantly.
To say I was shocked is an understatement. Janet had been dating this guy Mark for sometime now, not really sure how long it is anymore cause it feels like they've been dating for eternity. He's a few years older than her, runs a successful business and all.
She's always going on and on about him nonstop, about their dates, the type of flowers he got her and sometimes she gets too caught up and gives some unnecessary details about their relationship.
Some very unnecessary details.
I had a hunch they'd end up getting married but when did he propose? why wasn't I told till now? I thought I had a good relationship with my sister.
"It happened last night that's why she hasn't told you yet," he added in, probably noticing my change of mood.
"Oh."
Well that made a little sense. Knowing my mom she probably bombarded her with a lot of things to do the moment she heard the news. So I partially forgive her for not telling me something this big.
Who am I kidding? I'm definitely mad at her. No, at the both of them!
"Yeah. You should probably get dressed before mom goes all freaky on you," his eyes were off the screen, he was looking at me now.
I think that was his polite way of asking me to leave his room. Then again I can't tell.
"Oh. yeah I should."
I turned and left.
-----****------
The evening was pleasant so far. Everyone seemed genuinely happy for the couple.
I had managed to change into a white long evening gown just before my mom came to check up on me in my room. I had no time to style my hair, so ran a brush through it and let it down.
To be fair she had no right to be mad at me whatsoever if I wasn't ready by the time she came up.
Which normal person tells, scratch that, commands their daughter to come home without explanation , then expects her to be a mind reader and get dressed for an evening she had no idea of.
Exactly no one. I now officially declare my mom 'abnormal'.
I still haven't seen Janet, we seriously needed to talk about her lack of 'communication skills'.
Honestly its hard to find anyone with so many strange faces hovering all around the area. They should probably be from Mark's side of the family.
It still baffles me how they were able to pull this whole party off in just a day. It was way too organised. Then again she may have planned the whole thing ahead of time.
I left the crowded area after greeting a few people here and there and headed to the balcony. It's a good thing it was empty cause I just wanted to be alone.
The cold night wind sent shivers down my spine but it felt so nice and relaxing.
I stared into the night sky with different thoughts clamming my head.
I repeatedly thought of calling Scott back but I didn't know what to say if I called and he picked up.
Apologise maybe?
But what exactly would I be apologising for.
Sean
The cause of everything.
I won't lie that I wasn't still hurting cause I was. I try so hard to forget him but he still manages to crawl back to my mind.
Really how bad was I? was it really that big of a mistake to kiss me?
A tap on my shoulder disrupted me from my thoughts but I hesitated in turning to acknowledge who it was.
I just wanted to be alone, why can't I have that?
The tapping was incessant so I slowly turned and came face to face with a breathtaking Scott.
My eyes widened in surprise and breathing hitched.
What was he doing here?
"Hello to you again," he spoke, breaking the silence.
His lips curled up to form a sexy smirk probably noticing my stunned expression at seeing him here.
"Oh my God! you really are stalking me."
