Chapter 2
I was standing outside of the office with the tempory assistant to fill in for me. I just wished Pepper was here to have done this with Tony and not me. I was tempted to call her but I didn't. I wasn't going to bother her with my problems.
I walked down the corridor and the tempory assistant called out to ask me where I was going so I told him I was going to the bathroom and I'd be back in a minute or two.
I walked into the toilets and grabbed my phone and pressed Kate's contact to ring her. She picked up instantly like usual.
"Riley? Is everything okay sweetie?" She asked a little worried.
"Yeah, I just wanted to ask if I could come round for dinner tonight. It's been a while."
"Riley, sweetie of course you can. You're always welcome you know that. Just because you've moved out and you're becoming independent, it doesn't mean you can't come back when you want to." She told me. She had told me that many times but I had always felt like a burden and I still do.
"Thank you Kate. You guys are great, I just need to talk and get my mind off of things." I told her.
"Okay sweetie, I'll see you later." She told me and I smiled.
"Yeah, talk to you later mom." I said and I could hear a sniffle. I had to fight back the tears myself. I didn't like it when Kate cried neither did Steven.
The door then bursted open and I hung up the phone. I looked over and saw Tony entering the bathroom.
"Tony this is the ladies!" I yelled at him.
"I don't care if you and Peter fell out when you were in high school. Stop moping about it and get back in the office. You had your fire and then it got lost, so find it back out and get your behind in there." He told me and I narrowed my eyes. Maybe I did need a little bit of 'Tough love' but not from Tony.
I sighed and walked past Tony and out of the toilets. He started interrogating me about what I was doing and I simply told him, 'Gee, I don't know Tony. What do you do in toilets.' Which I regretted as he went into serious detail with it.
We got back into the office and looked around. There was a table that would be found in a meeting room but there was no way it was going to seat all of the Avengers. I saw Peter looking at the books Tony had on the wall and I knew there was no way he was going to look away from them for nobody. I chuckled at it.
"Tony, we're not all going to fit on that table." I told him and he looked at me and laughed a bit.
"Oh I don't have formal meetings with the Avengers. Some of us sit and some stand and lean against something. But you know me, I don't sit down a lot at meetings - especially with the Avengers - So you can have my seat behind my table."
I just stared at him wide eyed. I grabbed my phone and looked up at him. "Do I need to call Pepper? Are you feeling okay?" I asked.
"I'm fine and you don't need to call her. She'll take it as an emergency and come out of whatever meeting she's in. Don't you do it." He told me and I shrugged.
"Okay then, if you say so."
"Oh I do." He told me with a smug face on.
"Right..." I trailed off. I sat down at Tony's desk and started playing Space Invadors. Tony had this installed on his computer so if he got bored during a meeting or if something I had been telling him was boring him.
I got so into the game that I hadn't even noticed the room becoming full of Avengers.
Steve wondered over and looked at Tony. "I see she's took after you with the games."
"What?" He asked confused. I was listening myself but I didn't want to look away from the screen cause I would've died if I had.
"Isn't she your daughter?" Steve asked and Tony choked and I laughed out loud turning the chair to face him.
"What part of me resembles him?" I asked him.
Steve looked at me and Tony multiple times making Tony and I look at each other multiple times. Peter had looked up from the book he had been reading to observe the conversation we were having.
"She looks like Pepper a little, not a lot like you though." Steve stated.
Tony and I stared at each other and I saw a hint of anger in Tony's face. I stood up and linked arms with Steve and walked away from Tony. "Steve, my parents died when I was little. Tony and Pepper are not my parents. I have adopted parents but they're not them either. I don't appreciate you coming in here and implying that Pepper might have been unfaithful to Tony because she hasn't." You told him and he looked at you guilt plastered all over his face.
"I didn't mean it like that. It wasn't meant any harm towards Pepper's faithfulness to Tony. I was just saying you looked like Pepper. It was my mistake. I should go explain to him," he told me unlinking his arm from mine as I smiled in understanding. He went to walk away but stepped back in front of me. "Oh and thank you."
"What for?" I laughed confused.
"I'll tell you later." He said patted my shoulder and walked towards Tony.
"So, you're Riley I'm guessing?" I heard someone ask and I looked over to the source of the voice. It was a guy who had an almost British accent. I turned to face him.
"Yes I am, I'm afraid I don't know all the Avengers yet. What's your name been so you know mine??" I asked him curious.
"Oh I'm sorry I hadn't realised. I'm Vision." He stated and I got very confused. I looked at him from head to toe.
"Isn't vision red and yellow?" I asked him a little quietly.
"Yes I would usually be yes. I've learnt things about the mind stone that is embedded in my forehead," he touched his forehead and it showed up. It was a very pretty yellowy orange colour. "What I have learnt has allowed to me to take the form of a human. Obviously I'm still a machine-" he was cut off by someone who came to his side. I knew her most definitely.
"Vision, you're not a machine. You know I don't like that term." Wanda told him caressing his cheek. I stood there awkwardly trying my hardest to avert gaze from the romantic scene in front of me.
"If I am not a machine then what am I?"
"You're just like the rest of us. You're capable of emotions that we all have, are you not?" She told him and I smiled a little. It was true.
"Plus you look like us." I butted in and they both looked at me. Wanda smiled and Vision stared at me not knowing what to say next.
"Thank you Riley." She told me and hugged me as I hugged back.
"You're welcome," I chuckled. We stopped hugging and Vision snaked his arm around her waist. "So this is the guy that stole your heart?"
"It is, it just happened." She told me. Vision started smiling like a goon which made me smile as well. These two's happiness was contagious.
"It happened over Paprika." He started laughing and Wanda just smiled.
"Paprika?" I chuckled a bit.
"I forgot to mention he's a bit of a joker sometimes." Wanda told me and I laughed a bit.
"Right, well as long as your happy." I told them and they nodded as Vision kissed the side of Wanda's head. I had to leave before I got a little jealous.
I walked over to Peter who was engrossed in the book again. I leaned against the bookshelf like he was doing. He took knowledge that I was there and closed the book putting it under his arm and putting his hands into his pockets. Real classy.
"So, has anyone actually twigged that you're the new face here?"
"I've been getting stares, but ultimately you're the new face here." He told me looking around the room.
"How do you know you were getting stares?"
"Spidey senses."
"Spidey senses?" I chuckled.
"Yes, when I was bitten by the spider I didn't just get the ability to stick to walls and ceilings and swing with webs. I have heightened senses, I know when something dangerous is going to happen. I like to call them spidey senses."
"Right okay." I nodded. I then turned and I punched him in his arm. He looked at me rubbing his arm.
"Ouch, what was that for?" He asked whining.
"I guess you can't sense everything." I leaned back on the bookshelf feeling very proud of myself.
"I didn't sense that because you're not dangerous. I said I can sense if something that's dangerous is going to happen. Not someone punching me like a child. We're twenty one Riley. We aren't children anymore."
"You think I'm not aware of that superhero?" I asked him pissed and walked away to go back to playing Space invadors.
Note to self, stay away from Peter for the rest of the day.
~~~~~~~~
The meeting had only just started and everyone had their eyes on Tony and I. I was still playing Space invaders and I was having a lot of fun. I had forgot how fun Space Invadors was.
"Tony, you bought a kid to a battlefield?" Steve asked him as Tony had just come clean about Peter being in high school when he got recruited in the 'Civil war' between Tony and Steve.
"I did what I had to. You gave me no choice, but that's in the past. He's a grown man now, look at him." Tony said and Peter had looked up from his book. I started to wonder if he's even reading it.
"He sure is a grown man but you could have been responsible for any harm that had befell him."
"He's got a point." Romanoff and I agreed.
"Riley, you're supposed to be on my side. Steve you don't think I thought about that. I told him he died than that was on me and he said that-"
"I was just trying to be like you," Peter cut him off and everyone looked at him including Tony and I. "Everyone needs to lay off Mr. Stark. It wasn't his doing, he saw me on YouTube and found out it was me. He came to see me and we discussed it. He made sure I was comfortable getting myself into what he needed me to do. It was I who kept trying to get back into the Avengers team afterwards. My grades dropped and I 'lost' one of my best friends... It wasn't until my grades got back up and I started being myself again that Mr. Stark had recruited me again but I said no. Now, here I am. So everyone please don't try to argue about me to Mr. Stark because he did his best he could. I'm the one who is coming clean about Spider-Man and that's why we're here." Peter had defended Tony and we both looked gobsmacked. He had never said something like that with the passion he had said it with. He must love being Spider-Man.
I felt a little bad about telling him that he had lost me whilst we were in high school but it had to be done. He had to know where he stood with me and I needed him to know it.
"So this friend, the friend that left you sounds like a b*tch." Sam - A.k.a. Falcon - said.
Peter's head snapped to me and so did Tony's. I just stood up, walked over to the window and stared out trying to calm down. Tony turned around to me and started whispering to me.
"Riley, calm down. I need you to be calm in case I get angry. These discussions can get heated when Sam's in the room. I should have warned you. I'm sorry, it's my fault. Sometimes he just speaks his words and doesn't think, he doesn't always have a filter." He whispered to me whilst Peter was talking to them all.
"He just said it right out. I can't even say anything back which is the worst part. You probably won't let me stay if I had."
"I know but I just need you to be calm. We can tell them that you are the friend and he'll apologise."
"No thank you. I don't need any pity. Besides, I made it quite clear to Peter earlier that he's just Peter to me."
"What do you want me to do?" He asked me and I shrugged.
"I don't know." I told him.
He turned back around and the meeting continued. I had calmed down and had got back into the meeting.
