Chapter 41 - " someone like you doesn't change"
My eyes flutter open only to feel them just as heavy as they felt the night before. Without moving the rest of my body, I looked at my surroundings and saw that I was still in Harry's room. My arm slowly and carefully reached over to the other side of the bed to see if Harry had come back. All I felt was emptiness and coldness making my hand pull back.
Harry never came back. I didn't know whether to feel relieved or worried. Had he come back, saw me there and left to sleep somewhere else or had he just never come back?
The worst scenarios started invading my mind making me even more paranoid than usual.
" Harry's fine" I whispered to myself.
Harry was a big boy. He knew his surroundings, he grew up here.
I picked myself off his bed and immediately went to my bags. I changed the clothing I was wearing from the night before and into some jeans and a T-shirt. It was going to be a long plane ride back meaning that I wanted to be as comfortable as possible.
As I zipped up my suitcase, m thoughts were interrupted by Jess.
" Harry!" she shouted outside the door.
Shit. I wasn't even supposed to be here.
" I know Cailin's probably in there cause she's not in her room. I just need her right now" she said quieter through the door.
I unlocked and opened the door to see her with her usual smile. But her smile slowly faded as she looked at my face. I hadn't thought about looking myself in the mirror before getting dressed. My eyes were probably puffy from crying so much the night before.
" Hi" I said looking back at her.
" what happened?" she demanded as she pushed passed me and into the bedroom.
" Harry's not here" I said in a quieter tone.
Jess stopped roaming around the room and looked back at me.
" what happened?" Jess asked then looking down at my packed suitcase.
" we broke up and I'm going back home" I answered.
" the hell you are. It's Christmas Eve!" she protested.
I closed the door in order for no one to hear our conversation.
" we got into a huge fight, Jess. I broke up with him so I'm the one who can't stay here" I shook my head.
" I thought you guys had made it official by kissing in front of the paparazzi. I saw the pictures online!" Jess exclaimed.
The pictures. I hadn't even thought about that. The media was going to be all over it and I wasn't prepared to deal with it all. It scared me to go home alone now. People were going to come after me because of it.
" I don't know what to do Jess" I said as tears started flooding my eyes..
" don't you dare start crying over that idiot" Jess said as she came over to me and wrapped her arms around me.
I held onto to her as if she was the only thing available.
" well I knew you haven't before around town much so you're coming with me" Jess said letting me go.
I shook my head looking down at my bags.
" I have to go back home Jess" I said.
As much as I wanted to stay here, I knew I couldn't. This wasn't my home. This wasn't my family. This was all Harry's. How could I stay after ll the fighting? I had no right to do so. It would ruin the holiday for Harry. My holiday was already ruined, I didn't want to ruined everyone else's.
" at least go into town with me for lunch. I really need you" Jess said with a look that I had never seen before.
Jess looked nervous and scared. This was a different side of Jess. She was usually so confident and sure of herself. She never showed that she was nervous.
" what's going on Jess?" I asked.
" I'm meeting with someone that I haven't seen in years and I need some support" she confessed.
Jess had been there for me in so many ways. I hadn't been there for her because she never seemed to need it. Yet in this moment, my support was what she needed.
" just for the day, then I'm gone" I promised her.
*
Jess had a great taste for nice little restaurants. The place where she had taken us was one of the most adorable places I had ever been in. A large part of it was on the outside but was completely shaded by white sun umbrellas. The tables and chairs were a light shade of wood with white ribbons tied around the ends of it.
" do you want me to stay with you or hide out?" I asked as we entered the restaurant.
" I don't know yet" she said taking a seat at a take table.
" I'll stay with you as long as you need" I said to her keeping her hand in mine.
I still hadn't asked Jess who was the person she was meeting with. If she wanted me to know before hand, she would have told me by now. But I couldn't help but wonder how the mystery person was.
A distant memory appeared in my mind as we waited. It was the night where Harry was outside the tour bus in the dessert in the middle of the night. That night I had heard part of a conversation where he demanded she stay away from someone. After that phone call, he had went straight to a near by bar to drink.
Another memory came up. It was the night of the Halloween party. The night that I ended up in the hospital because of Carter. The hair on the back of my neck rose at thinking about that moment. But before all that, I remember seeing Harry and Jess fighting over someone she had been talking to.
All this meant that Harry hated this mystery person. Was this why she wanted my support?
" there he is" she whispered pulling me back from my thoughts.
My eyes roamed around the restaurant to look for whoever Jess was talking about. I saw an older man walking towards us. The man was tall and built. The scruff on his face made him look a little older than he probably was. But as he walked closer towards us I couldn't help but notice how familiar he looked.
It was when he got close enough for me to see his eyes when I realized why. Those green eyes were identical to one another.
" Jessica" the man smiled.
" hi dad" Jess smiled back at the man.
This was their father. It made sense why he looked like Harry. But something didn't feel right. Harry had always avoided talking about his family. He had only talked about his mother once. His father was never once mentioned.
" Cailin" Jess nodded at me.
I took the hint and walked away from the reunion. Taking a seat across the restaurant, I still kept my eyes focused on Jess. I ordered something to drink to keep me occupied while I watched them talk. Her father would say a couple things and she would smile at him.
I could feel something was wrong with this whole scenario. There must have been a reason Jess wanted me to come with her and not Harry. Jess probably didn't want Harry to know she was here.
" excuse me, can I have the to go menu?" I heard a familiar groggy voice say behind me.
I turned around to see Harry standing only a couple feet away from me. The waitress in front of him smiled and handed him the menu. But he didn't smile back, instead he just took the menu and read it leaning against the counter.
Harry looked terrible. He was clearly hung over. His hair was a mess and he was still wearing the same clothes from the night before which meant that he had never even gone home last night. That made me anxious. He hadn't go home, so he slept somewhere else, maybe even with someone else.
" miss, would you like another glass?" the waiter asked.
" no thank you" I said as quiet as possible so Harry would hear or see me there.
But that was no use. I looked away from the waiter and back to Harry to see him looking back at me. I froze. He put the menu down on the counter and walked towards me. Harry took a seat in front of me without breaking eye contact.
" what are you doing here alone?" He asked.
But I didn't respond. Flashes from the night before invaded my mind making me nervous to even talk about. The last thing I wanted was to fight in public with him.
" so you're not alone....?" Harry suggested.
" can we not do this right now, Harry?" I begged him.
" do what exactly? Talk?" he glared.
Harry was still pissed off about last night. His anger was clearly still in his tone of voice.
" I'm going back to New York in a couple hours, so we can talk about when you get back too" I shook my head.
Harry squinted his eyes, surprised that I was actually leaving him in London. The waitress put down a glass of water for him on the table but he ignored him completely. Harry was still glaring at me.
" what are we going to say to the media?" I asked wanting an answer before I get back to New York and am slammed with questions about our relationship.
" what do you mean?" Harry asked.
" well we can't tell them we're together, because we're not. We could tell them it was just a joke" I shrugged.
" whatever" Harry scoffed getting up off the table.
But his scoff was the part that hurt or scared me. It was that when he got up from the table, he turned in the direction where Jess and their father were sitting. He stood there just staring at the two, making me nervous. His face began to become red with anger.
" what the hell are those two doing together?" he barked at me.
" Jess wanted me to come with her" I explained getting up with him.
" fucking hell" he said before taking off towards them.
" Harry!" I called after him but it was no use.
Harry practically ran towards Jess and his father, causing me to ran as well.
" you fucking bastard! How dare you even come near Jessica!" Harry yelled at the man.
Jess had a nervous and scared expression spread across her face seeing her brother in that moment. As for their father, he seemed to be just as surprised as she was but he somehow was able to show it a little less.
" I warned you to never get a hold of her! I told you to leave her the hell alone!" he barked at his father.
" Harry stop" Jess begged with tears in her eyes.
" I told you not to Jess! And you had to drag Cailin into this?!" Harry screamed at his sister.
Their father got up from his father standing in front of Harry. Standing behind Harry, I could still see how tall they both were. They were about the same height.
" calm down son" the man said to him.
" don't you dare call me son, you son of a bitch" Harry spat at him.
His face was completely red and his whole body seemed to be shaking. Harry never looked so anger with someone. I had seen him anger so many times with so many different people. But it was always because of jealousy or just irritation. This anger was different. This anger came from somewhere deep inside him.
" Harry, we should go" I whispered as I looked around the restaurant seeing everyone looking at us because of the commotion.
" you go Cailin" Harry said still glaring down at his father.
" let her join the family reunion, son" the man tried to smile.
Before anyone could respond to his suggestion, Harry through a punch at the man straight to the jaw. As Harry pulled his hand back, I held onto the other arm, hoping he wouldn't do anything more stupid.
" leave Cailin" Harry said.
" no.." I whispered.
" Cailin, just go!" Harry said as his father began picking himself up again.
But I refused to do so.
" I've changed son" the man said to Harry.
" someone like you doesn't change" Harry scoffed.
Jess stood there with tears in her eyes, but nothing came out of her mouth. She didn't know how to respond with her father and brother in front of her. I wish Jess would have warned me about her father. I wish Harry would have told me that he didn't have a good relationship with his father.
But the reality was that I wanted to know why. What had happened in the past to make Harry hate his father so much.
" but I did! Your sister believes me!" their father exclaimed.
Harry looked quickly at Jess and then back to his father.
" once a murderer, always a murderer" he glared.
In that moment, my insides began shaking. I didn't know how to respond or know what to do. I just wanted to take Harry away from here. I wanted him to feel safe. Because I knew that even enough he was putting up such a front, I knew that Harry never expected to see his father again, especially not like this.
" let's go Jess" I said to her.
But she didn't move an inch. I had to take a few steps closer to her to get a hold of her. I told her arm and dragged her away from her father and brother. As we walked out of the restaurant, I looked back to see Harry looking back at us as well.
The facial expression that he held affected me. It affected me more than I think he realized.
Today I began to understand more who the real Harry Styles was.
~
took long enough but it's finally here!
I hope you guys are having fun for those who have started your summer vacation!
What do you guys think about this chapter?
Were you guys surprised?
What is the next step for Harry and Cailin?
Also I'm obviously going to finish this story and even write a sequel which I already have everything planned out. But I am also planning to write another story, based on the first time I fell in love. I want to write it because it was real and when I look back at it, I didn't realize how much of a love story it actually was.
Just a thought for the future!
Spread the love <3
