Chapter 4: People Judge
(Third POV)
'Megan, wait!' Gladion called out to the girl as her figure got smaller. He reached out to her, but she was just too far away for him to grab. He growled. 'Damn it! Why are people so cruel to others who are... are...' -- 'Others who are different.' Lizzy finished, sounding almost emotionless. 'It's because they're scared, most likely. Any change that is new to them, will put them into panic mode and make them think it's bad. Hence why that boy reacted the way he did.'
'I'm not mad at the kid!' Gladion stated with his fists clenched at his side. 'I'm mad at that woman! She's the one who put those disgusting thoughts in Megan's head! Untrue thoughts may I add!'
'Brother calm down!' Lillie cried 'Getting mad won't solve anything!'
Gladion grunted and hid his face in his hands, trying so hard to calm down. He was pretty sure his anger was scaring Lillie, which was the last thing he wanted. 'I'm sorry! It's just Megan's been through enough heartbreak to last two lifetimes, and I cannot stand seeing her hurt!'
'We understand.' Sun stepped in, his face looked sterner than usual 'We don't like our friend suffering either. So that's why I don't understand what you're still doing here and not chasing after her!'
He was right. What was Gladion still doing there? For all he knew his girlfriend's mental state might've been on the line, worst case scenario... But, that's why she needed him right now. He's the only one who had ever been able to calm her during an episode, or been able to get close to her during one of her breakdowns. He had to follow her. He wanted to follow her.
'Sun, can you get me to Aether Paradise?'
The ravenette smirked, holding up his pager 'In a flash!'
(Le Timeskip)
After dropping Gladion off at Aether Paradise, Sun left him to do what he had to. The blonde looked around and immediately spotted the blue and red dragon type, which Megan ride on to get there, pacing outside the building with a very worried expression on his face.
'Draco!' he yelled, running up to the Salamence who recognised him Immediately. It stomped over to him and growled in a panicked tone, while it's head kept pointing in a specific direction. Gladion placed his hand on the creature's head, trying to calm it down. 'Hey, hey, calm down. Where's Megan?'
Draco took a deep breath, as if to ease his nerves, and pointed his head in the same direction he did a minute ago. The same direction as the Aether house. Of course she would've went there. That's where her room is, and Gladion knew she thought of her room as an escape from reality. Gladion patted Draco's head to thank it before running towards his house.
As he ran down the halls of the house, Gladion began to wonder what he would find when he enters into Megan's room. Would she be crying? Screaming? Putting herself down? Would she even be in there? He suddenly felt nauseous at the thought of the girl he cared for being upset. He hated it. He hated seeing his loved ones unhappy. Especially her.
Shaking away his thoughts he found himself nearly at her door, but soon found someone already standing there with a worried look. Gladion halted and stared at the woman in confusion.
'Mother?'
Lusamine heard the voice of her son and turned to him, with her palm on her cheek. 'Oh Gladion thank goodness you're here. I don't know what's wrong with Megan; She seems horribly upset about something when she came home. And now she's shut herself in her room and won't come out for anything.'
Gladion clenched his teeth and gripped onto his hoodie, the part over his heart. 'Has anyone tried speaking to her?' he asked her.
The woman sighed with her arms now crossed. 'Many employees tried but she just yelled at them to get out. I tried going in there, but she seemed to react the worst when I did. Even Wicke couldn't get her to come around. I'm worried about her, Gladion.'
'So am I...' Gladion sighed as he stared at Megan's bedroom door. He wanted to talk to her, but didn't want to pressure her into it. He could at least try. Letting out a deep breath, he walked up to the door and knocked.
'What?' Megan's muffled voice was heard on the other side.
'Megan? Are you okay?' Gladion asked as he pressed his hands and ear against the door.
'I'm fine'
'Can I come in?'
'I don't give a crap.'
Gladion took that as an 'ok', and opened the door before walking into the room and telling his mother to wait where she was. He found Megan laying on her stomach on her bed, face in her pillow. She had two of her Pokemon in the room with her with her: Prince, her Umbreon, who was lying down nuzzled up to her. And Edge, her Silvally, who was staring at her with his head resting on the bed. They both looked concerned for their trainer. As they heard Gladion approach they turned their heads to him. It seemed they wanted him to talk to her, which he was planning to do anyway. He got closer, patting Edge on the head in the process.
'Could you two give us a minute?' He asked them.
They exchanged glances before nodding, and slowly walking out of the room. Gladion sighed for what seemed like the hundredth time today and sat down on the edge of the bed, looking down at the girl. 'Are you sure you're okay?'
'Fine...' She replied in a muffled voice.
'Is it what that woman said?'
Megan grew silent, which answered his question without having the need to speak. Gladion placed his hand on her back.
'Meg, you know those things she said aren't true...'
Megan snorted into the pillow, before picking her head up and smirking. 'Somehow I highly doubt that.'
'Why?'
'Because, Gladion...'
'That's not a valid answer.'
Megan grunted as she sat up properly, meaning Gladion could see her whole face. It looked like she had been crying. 'Because just look at me!' She yelled, pointing to the burn scar that ran down the right side of her body. 'I'm the very definition of freak! And do not get me started with my ability! It's no mystery why people think the way they do about me, Gladion!'
Gladion's face showed no emotion 'Yes it is.'
'What?' The girl squinted her eyes.
'It's a mystery to me. I can't see why anyone would think of a strong, smart, kind and beautiful-'
Megan laughed with no humour.
'-Girl like you as a freak.' Gladion finished, ignoring his girlfriend's interruption. 'I can't see why they just label you as 'unnatural' and 'Not human' without getting to know you. You are an amazing girl, Megan. And that's why I can't see why you believe the lies those people spit at you. Not only that but you let them get to you. You let them bring you down, when you really shouldn't. You're stronger than that. I know you're stronger than that. So they may not like you're image. Who cares? They don't know you personally, so they shouldn't judge. Everyone who knows you, especially me, sees you're beautiful. Even with that scar you're gorgeous. It reminds us of the bravery you showed those four years ago.' He paused, taking her hand before continuing. 'People judge. Because new things scare them. But that's just life, ya know. And you as a person have a choice. You can either let it pull you down and feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life. Or you can ignore it. I know it's easier said than done, but trust me you'll feel much better and find it much easier to pursue your dreams. You won't have that weight on your shoulders anymore.'
Megan stared wide eyed at the boy. He had never said anything like that to her before, or anyone else. Thing is, he was right. She had to let go of all the negative thoughts in her head. Life has its ups and downs, and sometimes anxiety hits you hard. But that's just part of life. And she had to accept it. Besides, why should she care what a stranger thinks of her? The people she cares about love her for the person she is, NOT for her looks. It was going to be hard. But she could conquer it. She will conquer it, together with her friends.
'Wow, Edgelord that was a really motivational speech.' She said in awe, grinning happily. 'I even agree with you.'
Gladion's eyes widened. 'You do?'
'Yup!' Her face softened into a smaller smile, almost sad, as she intertwined their fingers. 'I was so busy thinking negatively of myself, that I let it shadow over what was important. If it weren't for what you just said, I'm pretty sure all that negativity would've taken me over. I probably would've become too depressed to do anything. Sure, that woman's words still hurt. Heck, all the shade I received still hurts. But as you said, I'm stronger than to let it drag me down... Wow, did that sound self-centered?'
Gladion shook his head before ruffling her hair 'Not at all. I'm happy you see it that way. Heh. Guess my 'motivational speech' was awesome enough, huh?'
Megan laughed sarcastically as she playfully punched his shoulder. 'We really need to fix your ego, dude.'
'Welp. Guess that's next on the list.'
'Agreed.'
Soon after, Prince and Edge reentered the room, and rushed towards their trainer as soon as they saw her sitting up. She fell backwards as they crashed into her, and began laughing when they began nuzzling her face. 'Okay, okay! I get it!' She blurted.
'We were so worried about you!' Prince cried.
'Sorry...'
'It's okay, you're okay now though right?!'
Megan smiled. 'Yea. Thanks to a certain frenchfry head.' She gestured to Gladion, who frowned at the nickname.
'Thanks to a certain frenchfry head.' He mocked.
A pillow was thrown at his face.
'Don't, get off my good side Edgelord!'
'Um...Sorry?'
....
'Wanna have a karaoke session?'
'YEEEE BOIII!'
'... Just yes would've sufficed, babe.'
(Elsewhere)
A man stood in a dark room, staring at the wall in complete silence. Next to him stood a Dusknoir who seemed just as dead. His breathing was steady and barely audible, and his blinking was slow. He seemed almost like a statue. One who hadn't slept for what seemed like years.
'Sir! I have good news!' A voice suddenly spoke from behind him, making him turn around to look at the person with his dull blue eyes. There stood a woman, in her early thirties, who had bright red hair and charcoal eyes and wore a white labcoat. She held a clipboard under her arm and had a pen tucked behind her ear.
'Go on then.' He told her in his raspy voice.
'We found them!' She exclaimed in a cheerful voice.
'You're going to have to be a little more specific than that.' He sighed, scratching his stubble.
'Oh. Erm... Well, as you know we've been monitoring all of Alola for quite some time now-'
'Yes. I do own this organisation, Kate.'
'I-I am aware sir-'
'Just get to the point!'
'A-As you wish. We found the Artemus siblings. They are all still alive. Even the youngest, who we thought died seven years ago!'
The man flinched at the information, eying the woman suspiciously. 'Is this true?'
'Yes! One hundred percent! It's them!'
'... Get my wife.'
A/N: O Sh*t... New characters.
Well then. Looks like there's a new organization in town, and they've been looking for these... Artemus siblings.
Who is this mysterious man? And who are the Artemus family? Find out next time, on Just Broken Lovers!
