Chapter Twenty Three

A/N: thanks to all our faithful readers!

Although Lia obviously knew Lin was a celebrity, it was different when she saw him in that light. Her family still poked fun at the fact that she had once ventured off one afternoon to find Lin, convinced he could help her get a better grade in history. It had been years since he had gone from being 'Lin-Manuel Miranda' to just her goofy dad.  Having Lin as a dad beat any celebrity status, by far. Seeing him at the top of the podium, though receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was, admittedly, pretty freaking amazing.

After an array of photos and the line of fans her dad had spent time thanking them for showing up for the ceremony, the family was whisked away for the rest of the events. The family went out for lunch after Lin finished his obligations, and then headed off to a private party in his honor.  Lia rolled her eyes at the idea that a party including at least 300 people would be considered private, but she figured that's just how Hollywood is.

It was rare that she got to experience the celebrity part of her dad's job, often being left out of the perks of the limelight for the trade off of privacy and normalcy back in the Heights. She was thankful for the anonymity she mostly received and was able to separate between the two parts of her life. That didn't mean that she didn't love when she got to indulge in the perks. When Chance the Rapper showed up and said hi to Lia - by name -  her jaw physically dropped.

With the twins and her younger cousins back at the hotel with a sitter, the eldest teens and adults felt like they could relax a bit. As much as she wanted to cringe from her chair as she watched her parents, both clearly on the other side of a few cocktails, laughing endlessly as they screamed out the lyrics to a Naughty by Nature song in the middle of the dance floor, she couldn't. Her family had been through their fair share of shit the last few weeks, and it was nice to see them so carefree and happy.

Lia pulled her phone out of her clutch for the hundredth time that day. She scrolled past the social media notifications that had been blowing up her phone since that afternoon and went into her messages. Aside from several texts from classmates telling her that they had seen her on tv, there wasn't a text from the person she actually wanted to see one from.

"I don't get why you don't just text him?" Hunter pulled her out of her thoughts as she returned to their table, two drinks in tow, "You look way too hot right now to be moping about some guy in New York,"

Lia didn't even try to deny what she was looking for on her phone as she accepted the drink, "Because if he really wants to talk to me, he'll text me,"

Hunter gave Lia a side eye as she sat down, "Seriously, Lia?"

"What?"

"You're acting like this guy is your boyfriend!" Hunter pushed her brunette locks over her shoulder, "I think your problem is that you dated Ayden for so long and never got to have just fun dating or even a friendship with a guy."

"That's not true!" Lia balked defensively, stuffing her phone back into her clutch, "He is the one who wanted my number and he is the one who agreed to go out," If she was being honest, she knew she was being slightly dramatic, but rejection stung. "I didn't go to therapy looking for a boyfriend, but I also don't want to play childish games either,"

"So not texting someone that you want to talk to to prove a point is the mature thing to do?"

Lia glared at her cousin, who sat next to her with a self-satisfied look. She hated that she knew her cousin was partially right, however, there was no way in hell she was admitting that. She also didn't want to keep talking about Justin and ruining her mood at her dad's party. This trip was about him. She took a sip of her drink and, almost simultaneously, began coughing as she swallowed the unexpected drink.

"That's not coke!" Lia said through her coughing as her cousin immediately switched their drinks.

"Sorry," Hunter apologized, although she couldn't help but laugh at Lia's reaction, "That one's mine,"

Lia coughed into her napkin, the taste of vodka lingering in her mouth, "How did you even manage to get that?"

Hunter flipped over her wristlet with her ID poking out, although Lia immediately recognized that the picture was definitely not her older cousin, "College 101. How do you think I was at the bar a few weeks ago?"

Lia shrugged her shoulders, "I didn't think about it." Lia cautiously took a sip of her drink to make sure it was just soda. The last thing she needed was to get drunk at her dad's party. She leaned in and whispered, "Do your parents know?"

Hunter let out a loud laugh, attracting some eyes from the surrounding tables, "No," she replied unquestionably, "I'm 18. There are perks to being in college and living halfway across the country from your family,"

"I can't even imagine," Lia said, as she saw out of the corner of her eye her mom dancing to a Mark Anthony song with her aunt. She loved her family and had a close relationship with them - closer than most teenagers. But having a close family also meant everyone knew everything about everybody. She was a bit jealous that Hunter was able to have a life all of her own. "Wait, you're not taking me to a bar tomorrow night, are you?"

Hunter took a sip of her drink, her eyebrow raised, "And deal with you saying every five seconds, 'Oh my god, do you think we're gonna get caught?!,'" Her impression of Lia made the teen roll her eyes, "Absolutely not. Although I do have a brilliant beyond brilliant idea..."

Before Lia could question why Hunter suddenly had a large grin on her face, knowing some sort of crazy plan was circling in her mind since she had insisted on not telling Lia anything about their plans, their Abuelo made his way over to their table, with a fierce stride.

"What are you two doing?!" The elder exclaimed, the two teens giving each other the same look.

"Um, talking?" Lia said carefully, her eyes shifting between her grandfather and Hunter's drink, as her cousin gave her a look. Lia could be so paranoid at times.

Luis pointed towards the dance floor, "When Gloria Estefan is on, you don't stay in your chairs!" He said with a stern voice, the music blaring around them, "Is this the way you choose to represent your family?!"

The girls shook their heads and laughed. If there was one thing their Abuelo was, it was always the life of the party. The teens followed their Abuelo onto the dance floor, ready to make their ancestors proud.

From across the ballroom, Lin and Vanessa were taking a break from all the dancing and socializing in an alcove that overlooked the city.

"Looks like your dad got a hold of Lia," Vanessa nudged Lin's shoulder before taking a sip of her Manhattan, one of her favorite cocktails.

Lin looked on at his eldest with joy as she was freely dancing up a storm, "Better her than us," The two shared a laugh in agreement. When he was determined, Luis Miranda always succeeded, "It's nice to see her so happy though,"

"Yeah," Vanessa replied softly, leaning her body against her husband's, "She couldn't stop beaming the entire time we were at the ceremony."

Lin planted a soft kiss against his wife's hair, "I was nervous about it, but I'm glad we decided to have the kids there," Both parents were firm about the boundaries they kept when it came to their children and the public eye, the majority of the time doing everything they could to keep them out of it. But he was glad they had chosen today to be the exception; the feeling of having his four favorite people in the world with him on the whirlwind journey made a lump appear in his throat every time he saw them from his view. "Even with Stella nearly flashing the entire world,"

"Oh my god," Vanessa muttered under her breath, burying her face into her hand as the vision of her daughter entered her mind. When the family was taking photos and Stella saw all of the cameras pointed at her, she became so nervous that she picked up the bottom of her dress to hide her face away. Thankfully, Vanessa had opted to put the toddler in leggings - never knowing how rambunctious the two year old could get, and only her belly was in the camera view. Vanessa swiftly realized the laughter was aimed at her daughter; her face going beet red. She quickly fixed her outfit and bribed her into taking a few pictures, which she then soaked up. "For being our most dramatic child, she picked today of all days to become camera shy,"

"It will probably make some 'Top Ten Cutest Hollywood Walk of Fame Moments' list," Lin replied with a sheepish smile as he thought about his lively two year old.

"Or someone writes an article that we don't know what the hell we are doing at parenting and are raising hellions,"

"Do you think there is a walk of fame for that?" Vanessa lightly slapped her husband's chest, but shared in his laughter. She loved how he always brought ease to her worry.

"So," Vanessa looked up at her husband, her hand tight around his, "Do you feel any different?"

Lin took a swig of his whiskey sour as he pondered on the question, "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't really fucking cool to have two legends present me with a star on the Walk of Fame," He laughed, still in disbelief at the path his life had taken.

"If anyone deserves the recognition, it's you," Vanessa said, "You're the hardest working person I know,"

Lin smiled, "I couldn't do any of it without you," He said sincerely as he leaned down and pressed a kiss against her lips. Although Lin had obviously achieved success in his early twenties, none of it truly mattered until Vanessa and Emilia came into this life. They, along with the twins, gave his life purpose and meaning beyond any award.

Lin brushed his hand against the satin fabric of his wife's gown. She had changed into a black dress that made Lin weak at the knees when he had zipped her into the dress. It was simple and elegant: spaghetti straps, a sweetheart neckline and a slit that went just above her knee. On anyone else it would have looked like a nice dress, but on Vanessa it looked as if it had been perfectly tailored. "And have I told you that you look absolutely incredible tonight?"

"You know," Vaness eyed her husband up and down, stroking his loosened tie, "All of our kids are accounted for, and It's been on my bucket list to hook up with a star from the Walk of Fame,"

"Really?" Lin teased, pressing his lips together at the sight of his wife's alluring eyes,  "I happen to know one of those,"

"Yeah?"

Lin took Vanessa's empty glass from her hand and set both cups onto a nearby table. He interlocked his fingers between hers, "Why don't we try to check some boxes off that list," The married couple ran inside, giggling like teenagers, as they made their way to find the closest door with a lock.
