Training at the break of day
I woke up early the next morning, no real reason I just do sometimes. Petra was asleep in her bed opposite me. Her and I same a small room together. The boys slept next door to us and Captain Levi slept next to his office in another part of the building. The Commander believed that it was best if the special operations team stayed close together. It was still too early for anyone to be up so I decided to go and do some training. We had a little gym in the courtyard. It had a punching bags and some weights too. I needed to train a lot to stay strong. I couldn't stop training otherwise my weak body would be useless. I quietly put on some sweat pants and a sports bra that showed off my abs. I put a green head band in to keep the hair of my face. The colour was the same shade as my green eyes. The headband and my eyes stood out against my short black hair. It used to be a lot longer, it did come down to my waist but the day I started training I released that it was in practical. Therefore I cut it off, I loved my long hair but becoming a soldier was more important to me. The long hair was getting in my way so like my things in my life, I dropped it. Then I snuck out of the room and made my way down to the courtyard...
The morning air was crisp and cold against my skin. For the moment I was freezing but knew that once I stated training it would be a blessing. As I thought there was no one around, the sun wasn't even up yet. Everyone got up pretty early here, usually at day break, which from the looks of things looked like a few hours away. I stretched, waking myself and my body up from sleep. Then I began to train...
Sweat was dripping down my face but I didn't care. I carried on punching the punching bag with all my might. They had to be faster, more powerful, more defined. Maybe that thought was a little unreasonable, I had been fighting from a young age so all of this was like second nature to me. I had never lost a fight, not since I started taking it really seriously anyway. When I was younger and first started, I loved the power that came with knowing how to hurt someone. I got cocky and started picking needless fights, but in general at the time wasn't as good as I thought I was. I had the theory down but my weak arms didn't pack powerful punch to actually make a difference, and you can probably guess that I got beat up a lot for it. After getting beat up for about a month was when I started training. I would practise my punches day and night. Run around the streets to get faster. To sit ups, pull ups, squats everything until my body was way too toned for a 10 year old. I think I mainly picked fights because it was just after my Dad had died. I felt like I needed to prove myself but I understand now that picking fights over nothing was stupid and a waste of time. When everyone found out that I was planning to join the military they mainly laughed at me. Told me that I was too small, too weak but that just fuelled me more. I was punching the bag with such force that it split. I stopped at watched as the sand from inside poured out on to the floor.
"Bollocks!" I said. "Guess that was too hard." I took the broken punch bag off, grabbed a new one and clipped it on. I steadied it then held my fists up in front of my face again. I was just about to throw my next punch when I stopped in punch because I heard something behind me. I turned and knew that there was someone watching from the shadows. Who could that be? Who else would be up at this time of day?
"You're form is pretty good considering your supposedly weak body." Said a cold voice I knew all too well. Then Captain Levi stepped out from the shadows. I did the military salute of my right hand over my heart and the other neatly tucked behind me. "Oh, don't do that. It's too early for that crap." I relaxed.
"Good morning Sir." He walked towards me calmly. I noticed that he was already fully dressed in his usual outfit with his brown jacket over the top.
"What are you doing up so early?"
"I couldn't sleep Sir. I decided to come and make good use of the time." I also wondered why the Captain was up so early but I wasn't prepared to ask. It seemed disrespectful.
"Drew have you ever thought about becoming a Captain yourself?"
"No Sir. I can't say that I have."
"My advice would be not too. There is too much pointless paperwork to be done."
"I'll be sure to take that advice Sir." The Captain sighed heavily.
"You are always so formal around me." He said it quietly but it was loud enough for me to hear.
"That's because you are my Captain Sir and I respect you greatly." He gave me one of his famous dead eyed looks.
"You do know my name don't you?"
"Yes Sir."
"Tell me what it is." I was confused at his demand. Why would he tell me to do such a thing?
"It's Levi, Sir." He nodded and began to walked away but turned and looked back at me once more.
"Would you like it if I simple called you Cadet and never used your name?" I thought for a second.
"I guess not Sir."
"It's the same with you calling me Captain. My name is Levi just like yours is Drew. Use my name not my title." Then he turned on his heels and walked away from me...
