The aftermath
Warm, I was really warm and I was moving like I was on a horse. There was someone in front of me. They were what was warm. That's were the warmth was coming from. I tightened my grip on the warm someone they would protect me. They were my comfort, maybe it was Jake? No he was gone, it couldn't be him. Then who was it? I felt safe with them. I got the smell of mens deodorant. It was a smell I knew, I smell that I like...
"Levi." I said out loud knowing who it was. I then started to come around. The wind around me becoming real, the pain in my leg felt like I was being stabbed with a thousand knives, the sound of horses hooves pounding on stone streets, the moans of injured soldiers behind me and finally my eyes opened.
"Drew, you awake?" Asked the Captain who was right in front of me. I was on the back of his horse, he really was how I was clinging to. There was no space between the two of us and his closeness made me blush.
"I am. What's happened?"
"You passed out because of the pain. The doctors on the field did what they could but your leg it broken pretty badly and you lost a lot of blood from your head." He told me. I noticed the thick white bandages around my head.
"Is it true? Jake is he...?"
"Dead. I confirmed it."
"I kind of hoped that was all just a nightmare."
"No it was real but we have done it now. The mission is over, we succeeded in what we came out to do."
"It was such a simple mission...it seems like we lost a lot of soldiers when we didn't need too."
"I agree but that is not my position to say. Erwin doesn't even agree with it but it was not his decision either. Drew in all seriousness are you okay?"
"I'm okay."
"It a good thing your so strong. If you weren't I would have lost you today."
"It will take more than a broken leg to get rid of me."
"Good." Was all he said. I buried my face into his green scouting legion cape and fell back a sleep...
My eyes fluttered open I was looking up a white ceiling. Captain Levi was gone and with him his warmth and the safe feeling that came with him. I looked around me, I looked like I was in a hospital off some sort, we must have made it back through the wall. I looked down at my leg and saw that it was in a white cast and propped up on several pillows. I heard the wooden door into the room open and Petra came in with some water.
"Afternoon Drew."
"Afternoon?" I questioned.
"Yeah you've been a sleep since we got back yesterday. There's some food for you there and I just got you some water. It should still be hot you only just missed out on dinner." I looked to the table on my left and saw a bowl of steaming hot soup. My stomach growled and I sat up but the movement shot pain straight through my leg. I groaned in pain. "Careful." Petra said coming over and handing me the plate if food.
"Thanks." I said picking up the soup and shovelling the soup into my mouth. It was like lava but that didn't bother me, I was too hungry to care.
"Wow, never seen you eat like that before." She said but I didn't respond. I kept eating and eating until the bowl was pretty much empty. "Hey Drew."
"Umm?" I grumbled still eating the delicious soup.
"Tonight the guys and I...we were thinking that it would be nice to give Jake a funeral." She said making me finally stop eating and look up at her.
"You were?"
"Yeah, I mean I know that these is no body to bury but we still thought we should do it. Give him a proper send off and all. We were waiting for you to wake up. Since as he loved you we thought you should be there." My cheeks heated up as she said those words.
"I wouldn't say that he loved me...it was just a little crush. I didn't know him longer enough for it to be love." I said but the comment made us both fall silent. I realised that I was already talking about him in the past tense, like it had been ages since he died. My heart became heavy at the thought. He really was gone. I would never see him again. I would never see his smile or hear his laugh.
"Are you up to coming I mean your leg still looks pretty bad..."
"I have crutches right?"
"Yeah the doctor thought you might want a walk or something outside."
"Then I'll use those."
"Are you sure you can..."
"Petra I'm not missing this. It doesn't matter whether I'm up to it, I'm not missing Jake's funeral."
"Alright then...you should probably get dressed then. It will start in a bit..."
