Jake
The next morning I waked around the hall with a new handkerchief over my mouth. The Captain had given me dusting to do today. The new kid, Jake got the cleaning of the lobby. He looked shocked when the Captain told him that that was what he was to do. Perhaps he thought that they would be training and preparing for Titan attacks. Most would think that that's what a special operations team would be doing, not cleaning the whole building from top to bottom. I was walking past the lobby when I heard a crash inside the room. I immediately rushed in to see what had happened. On the floor I saw Jake groaning and holding his head. I went over to him and bent down, kneeling on my knees I looked at him.
"What did you do?"
"I was trying to reach the top shelf and I guess I lost my balance. Fell off and hit my head on the coffee table."
"Alright sit up let me see." I said helping him sit up. I looked at the back of his head, moving his red hair out the way lightly with the tips of my fingers. I felt him shiver. "Oh, does that hurt?"
"No, no it was just nice that's all." My eyes widened at his comment. He enjoyed that? I was starting to feel a little comfortable knowing that. Still though no one had ever said a thing like that to me before and it shocked me. "You alright?" He asked snapping me out of my daydream.
"Y-yeah I'm fine."
"No ones ever said something like that to you before have they?"
"No they haven't."
"Hard to think why when you are such and attractive woman." My face exploded into a deep shade of red. "Why haven't they?"
"I-I guess, it's my fault. I never have time for that kind of thing. I'm always training and things. My only focus in life was to get into the Survey corps."
"But you've done that now. Your one of the best in your division, so what are you working towards now?"
"Nothing...nothing really. I'm just set in my ways. Still never giving a second thought to anything else. I'm a soldier, one that will give my life if asked too. Nothing else seemed to matter."
"Your own happiness doesn't matter to you?" My mind instantly travelled back to not so long ago when I was alone with the Captain in his office. He had said something very similar. 'You don't think of your own happiness.' That was that he said. That was two different people that had told me to think of my own happiness.
"You don't understand. I am happy, I have everything I want. I'm in the survey corps, fighting for my race alongside my squad."
"But don't you long to have someone to hold? Someone to comfort you when your down? Aren't you lonely?"
"No not at all. I have my friends. When I need that I go to them, I have Petra someone who I have fought alongside for many years. She and I trained together in the training camp and now we fight side by side in battle. Not to mention I have a reliable Captain that I can go too. He might be a little scary and cold sometimes but he does care."
"You seem to respect him a lot."
"I do, he's amazing. You should see him in battle. It's like he was born to do it and he always finds a way to get us home alive. Even when everything seems against us. His ability to read the situation and think of the best way out on the spot...without him I don't think I would be alive. Most of us wouldn't...he has saved us countless times and I hope that one day I will get to pay him back for all that he has done."
"I guess they don't call him humanities strongest for nothing huh?"
"No trust me, on this squad is the safest place to be while he is the Captain you follow." I said smiling slightly and looking at his head. "Right you look fine. It's just a little cut. How many fingers am I holding up?" I asked holding up three fingers.
"3." He asked.
"Good, no concision." I said standing up and offering him a hand which he took. He didn't let go of my hand straight away and I became very aware if how could he was. "Ju-just be more careful next time. You got lucky it could have been a lot worse." Jake smiled and finally let go of my. Taking a step back he gave me a small salute.
"Yes mam." I smiled and turned around to leave when I spotted a speck of dirt on the bookcase.
"You missed a spot."
"What? Where?"
"Over there in the bookcase." When Jake spotted it when smiled.
"You've got good eyesight." He said laughing and scratching his head. The sight made me smile. His laughter was a joyful sound, that was something that in the day and age where a Titan's ruled and humans lived behind a wall, cowering in fear it was rare to hear. "Compared to you I might be blind." He said walking over to the spot he missed but he tripped on the coffee table. I burst out laughing not being able to take it anymore. Jake's cheeks became red as he listened to me laugh. I took deep breaths to calm myself down.
"I'm sorry that was funny." Jake smiled at me.
"Can you too stop messing around and get back to work?" Said the Captain's cold voice from behind me. I immediately stopped laughing and Jake stopped laughing.
"Sorry Captain." Said Jake and I together. He glared at Jake and there was an uncomfortable silence in the room. I awkwardly decided to walk out the room. As I walked past the Captain I looked at him front he side. He was still glaring at Jake with pure hate in his eyes...
