5. The Snub

It was a school day. And I wasn't even dressed yet. I was too busy looking through all my outfits to piece the perfect outfit together. "Time for school." Mom said from the hallway. I managed to pick my jeans out, they were my most ripped ones. But I just couldn't pick out a top and a jacket. I had no idea when she would checking on me. I heard knocking on a door, it wasn't mine. Probably Oliver's. She was one door away. I'd narrowed it down to 2 shirts. I would ask Taylor but she's asleep. I heard the door shut and my door open.

"And you've got half of an outfit half of your pajamas on." Mom said to me, she was annoyed I could tell.

"What looks better, the black or the dark green?" I asked her, I showed her both.

"Go for the green, it looks nicer." She said to me, I smiled.

"Thank you, I'm glad someone could help." I said to her, she then left and shut the door behind and I changed into my green shirt. I heard her knock on Taylor's door and then heard a thud followed by an 'ow'. I then heard another knock but on the bathroom door.

"Greg, you can't possible still be in the bathroom." Mom said as I walked out my door with my bag on my shoulder.

"I was almost done, but you just spooked it back in!" He said to Mom, we both shared a look before heading downstairs. After a while Dad and Anna-Kat came down. Dad was reading the newspaper and Anna-Kat was playing with her ponies and whinnying. I was just silently eating my breakfast before having to go to school.

"Honest, could you stop doing that?" Dad asked her, it was getting annoying. I saw Oliver come downstairs.

"I don't think I can Daddy." Anna-Kat said while looking at him.

"I'd like to revisit our earlier conversation." Oliver said to Mom, I had no idea what was said but it looks like I was about to find out.

"There's nothing wrong with clothes from an outlet mall. It's where Mom brought me this sweater. It's cashmere." Dad said while holding his arm out for Oliver to feel the material.

"Doesn't look like it." I said to him.

"It's a blend, and it's going to pill." Oliver said to him, I knew it wasn't cashmere just by looking at it. "You don't even know what I'm talking about." Oliver said, if only he could.

"That's just kinda sad." I said before eating the last of my cereal.

"I am not going to buy you a $90 shirt. If you want it that bad you can get an after-school job like Y/n." Mom said while looking at me, I worked at a little retail store with Hattie. The pay was good so I could afford clothing that I wanted.

"This is Westport." Oliver said to her.

"What does that have to do with anything." I said to him while placing my bowl on the side.

"So?" Mom asked him.

"That's just not a thing kids do around here. Cooper Bradford doesn't lift a finger and has his own credit card. I'm not asking for that." Oliver said, according to Lilli, Cooper Bradford had been talking about me with his friends. She overheard one of his conversations in class once.

"Greg, he's not asking for his own credit card." Mom said to Dad, I wasn't asking for one either.

"That is an inspiring tale of self-sacrifice." Dad said, not once did he take his eyes off of his newspaper.

"Hey, things are done a certain way in this town. Don't you want me to fit in?" Oliver asked, I fitted in well but I was not going to turn into one of those housewives.

"No. I don't. I reject every message that this town sends just like your sister- -that car that you drive or the clothes that you wear make you better than someone else. Who says you need money to be happy?" Mom said with a smile, Mom knew how much I hated a few people in this town.

"I said it twice today already." Oliver said to Mom, well he was wrong. Money didn't have to make you happy. I saw Taylor but a test on the fridge.

"You can't possibly be proud of that." Dad said to her, I mean it was good in terms of Taylor.

"It has a plus in it." Taylor said with a smile.

"It also has a C in it." Dad said to her, it was still good.

"C's get degrees." Taylor said to them.

"No. C's get their parents to co-sign for their car loans in their 40's." Mom said to Taylor, maybe getting C's weren't that good.

"Don't worry about me. I'll get an athletic scholarship to a mid-level junior college, marry well, play tennis. You can love in our guest house. Not year round." Taylor said to us, she had her life planned out and I admired her for that.

"I'll handle her. You take him." Dad said to Mom. Anna-Kat then whinnied. "We'll let that one slip through the cracks for the time being. You and I are gonna get your math grade up." Dad said to Taylor. I was hoping they'd sort Anna-Kat's whining issue soon.

"This is what I get for bragging." Taylor said to herself. I felt bad for her.

"And if you want a new shirt, you can earn money by doing chores." Mom said to Oliver, or he could get a job.

"Will do." Oliver said before giving his evil smile.

"Mnh-mnh. I know that smile. You cannot have Anna-Kat do your work for you." Mom said to Oliver, he just needed to do a bit of work.

"What? It's good for her OCD. Let a playa play." Oliver said to Mom.

"No chores, no shirt." Mom said to him.

"And that also means no money, if you didn't gather that." I said to Oliver with a smile. He gave me a glare.

"I'm not getting invited to Autumn Summers' birthday party." Anna-Kat said sadly.

"What makes you think that?" Dad asked her.

"Because since we moved here, I've never been invited to anyone's birthday party." Anna-Kat said to us.

"That will change, I know it will." I said to her with a smile. I took me a month until I made friends. But as soon as I got to school. I saw Hattie and Lilli and immediately walked over to them.

"I cannot wait until shift today, Sean said that whatever stock is left over can be distributed among the workers." Hattie said to me, with a smile.

"So you're just going to get clothes for free before lock up." Lilli said to us, we both looked at her.

"In a way, yes and on top of that we get our pay from last month as well." I said to her, I saw her jaw drop just a little.

"So you get free clothing and money as well. I'm going to need to get a job there." Lilli said to us, when school finished I changed and put my hair in a ponytail before heading downstairs. Mom was already gone.

"Right, I am off to work." I said to Dad while putting a jacket on.

"Have a nice shift." He said to me, Hattie and I met halfway before walking the rest of the way to shift.

"So, did you hear that Claire might get fired because she spilt coffee on one of open boxes out back and got stains on a few things." I said to Hattie with me, I knew she didn't know judging by her face.

"Wait really. She probably won't be here this shift which means, Lilli can try and get a job with us." Hattie said with a smile, I loved how I knew all the things that was happening at work and sometimes at school as well. It helped being kinda popular.

"We'll just have to see." I said to her, once shift ended. We took what we wanted and then got our money. When I got home I felt eyes on me. Mainly on my bag. "It was free, they didn't sell." I said to them before going upstairs. I then put the clothes up in my room and put the money in my jar. Just needed a lot more thousands or millions to get a nice house and start up a dance company. When it got the next day I wore something new school, when I got there Lilli was waiting on the steps.

"Is that new?" She asked me while looking at me.

"And free." I said too her with a smile.

"I should really get a job." She said to me, I smiled at her.

"Well Claire got fired so there looking for someone else, why don't you apply." I said to her with a smile, she smiled as well.

"I might just have to." She said to me with a smile. Once Hattie showed up we went inside together. When the day ended I got home and practiced for my dance class tomorrow. I found out that Anna-Kat hadn't been invited to Autumn's party. When I saw her, I hugged her.

"You'll be invited one day, I know you will." I said to her with a smile.

"How can you be so sure?" She asked me, I looked at her.

"Because everyone will become your friend because you are unique and one of a kind." I said to her with a smile, she smiled at me too. When it got to the next day Anna-Kat had 2 people over who wasn't invited to the party.

"Have you practiced the routine you were supposed to?" Mom asked me when I came downstairs.

"I have, do you want me to show you some of it?" I asked her with a smile.

"Why would I say no." She said to me with a smile.

"I'll do the beginning part." I said to her with a smile, I then did the beginning and realized that only Mom's eyes were on me.

"She's a really good dancer, almost professional." One of the Mom's said to Dad.

"She's been dancing since she was young and we get prouder of her everyday." Dad said to them with a smile. When my dance class ended I found out that we had a statewide competition and I was looking forward to competing. After I got my pajamas on I handed Mom my permission slip and she signed it before I retreated back into my room.

"Hey, guys, we're going to Disney World!" I heard Anna-Kat shout, I'd always wanted to go and we were finally going. I think. "Oh, my God! SeaWorld! Hey, guys, we're going to SeaWorld!" Anna-Kat said, was it Disney world or SeaWorld or was it none. I guess we'd just have to find out.
