26. The Uprising
This afternoon. I spotted Mom throwing away her car trash. That was before going inside again. Once it was quiet I went back out. "Are you ready to go home?" Mom asked me, I looked at her.
"About that, Hattie's Mom is dropping us off for dance today." I said to her, she looked at me and nodded.
"I forgot about that, have fun." She said before I walked back over to Hattie. We waited for her Mom to show before getting in the car.
"How was school for the both of you today?" Mrs. Klahan asked us.
"We had a pop quiz in science and we failed. No doubt about it." Hattie said to her, we both laughed.
"She's not joking either, our brains went clueless." I said to her after dance practice, Mom picked me up and we went to get Oliver. She honked the car horn and out he came. Running, he was embarrassed. He immediately got in the car.
"Drive! Go, go, go!" He said as soon as he got in.
"Did you just try to pull off one last heist before retirement, but the crew member you trusted the most turned out to be working for the feds the entire time?" Mom asked him, I looked at her.
"Or did you Murder someone and then had to massacre the whole class in fears that someone would turn you into the feds and now you want us to drive you to the Mexican border to get you out the country to start a new life?" I asked her, it had to be something big in order for him to act like this.
"What? No! I just want to leave- -now! Punch it!" He shouted, Mom then took her seatbelt off.
"Seriously, Oliver, what is going on? Did something happen in ballet?" Mom asked him, it most definitely did.
"No, I just want to go." Oliver said to us.
"You know she's not gonna let this go." I said to Oliver.
"If you won't talk...then I'm gonna ask your teacher." Mom said to him, he looked panicked. She tried to get out but he locked the car. It was then a fight to see who could win. "Fine, you win. Let's go home." Mom said, making him lower his defences. She then laughed as she opened the door. "Sucker! Let this be a lesson to you- -trust no one. Not even your own mother." Mom said to us, the only people Oliver and I could trust was each other.
"That's a terrible lesson!" Oliver shouted at her.
"Don't worry, you can trust me with anything. We're twins, the only people we can trust." I said to him with a smile, he then decided to tell me what happened. When Mom got back the car was silence.
"We're not talking about this- -not now, not ever." He said to us, we were all silent. Mom was trying not to laugh which made me hold laughter. "A-are you smiling?" He asked us, we both looked away.
"No." Mom and I both said, she then looked at him again.
"Why are you so uptight? I am your mother. I used to bathe you." Mom said to him, making me laugh a little.
"Yeah, well, I got new stuff since then." He said to her, once we got home Oliver was walking away.
"Oliver, come on! Let's talk about this." Mom said as I passed them both to go upstairs.
"There's nothing to discuss. I'm never going to ballet again." He said to her before following me, I was messaging Hattie and that made me want something. I walked out my room and saw Mom and Dad stood out there.
"So, I have a question." I said to them.
"Anything, ask away." Dad said to me with a smile.
"So, Hattie is getting her navel pierced and I want one as well. Can I go and get mine done?" I asked them, Mom looked at me and shook her head.
"Definitely not, while your under my roof. No such thing will happen." She said to me, I groaned.
"You never let me do anything!" I said before walking back into my room and shutting the door. After a while all of us kids where sat downstairs, having a meeting before heading back upstairs. When it got around to dinner I was hoping for something good.
"Sloppy Joe's?" Mom asked while waving the plate.
"Sloppy Joe's are my favorite." Anna-Kat said after Mom handed Oliver the plate. He took one before handing it to me.
"They are? Too bad you don't eat meat anymore. Your dinner is this. It's called brown-loaf. And it tastes exactly like it sounds." Mom said to her, you couldn't pay me any amount of money to have that.
"Yuck." Oliver and I got out.
"Hey, you should picture that next time you lift Gina Tuscadero." Dad said to Oliver, I then laughed.
"He's got a point." I said to Oliver looked at the two of us before looking at Mom.
"Okay, Mom. Ha ha ha. I get it. I can't use your plates or your silverware. But come on. It's sloppy Joe's. I'll make a mess." Taylor said to her, I felt bad for Taylor.
"Actually, blondie, you don't get it. If you're old enough to dye your hair, then you're old enough to make your own dinner with your own food. Which then brings me to you Y/n. Put the Sloppy Joe down, you said we don't let you do what you want. So surely you'll want to choose your own dinner and not have any Sloppy Joe's." Mom said to us, this wasn't fair.
"I'm calling Child Services!" Taylor shouted at her.
"This isn't fair!" I shouted at Mom.
"With what?" Mom asked Taylor.
"Ugh!" Taylor said and we both got up and went to Dad's office to order pizza.
"I can't believe she would do this." I said to Taylor, as she ordered it.
"I know this is so cruel." She said before completing the order. "We just used the family computer to order ourselves a pizza and an air mattress. Should be here in 30 minutes or less." Taylor said to her with a smile.
"We did what we wanted to do." I said to Mom with a smile.
"How's the hell did you do that?" Mom asked Taylor, Taylor was about to shut Mom up.
"I have some birthday money saved up, and the internet is awesome." Taylor said to them with a smile.
"It is awesome." Dad said with a smile before he saw Mom's reaction. "The Internet, not that she outsmarted you. That's awful. Brown-loaf awful." Dad said to Mom making Anna-Kat look at her.
"Brown-loaf is my new favorite." Anna-Kat said to him, how could that child be my sister. I heard someone knock on the door.
"That will be Hattie, we're off to get our piercings done." I said to Mom with a smile, I was going to make it back for pizza.
"Wow, Katie, you have really lost control." Dad said to her, Mom groaned before I left with Hattie. It wasn't as painful as we thought it would be. Once I was dropped off home I went up to Taylor's room.
"Looking good, sis." She said to me with a smile.
"Why thank you." I said to her, I sat next to her and we started eating our pizza. When it got to the next day I was talking with Hattie before Mom walked in. "I've gotta go, I'll call you later." I said to her.
"That's fine." She said before I hung up on her. Mom then told me the story of when she wanted to do something when she was my age and wasn't allowed to. It was a good story but it didn't change a thing. After a while we all had to get changed for Dad's reading. We then convened in the kitchen apart from Dad.
"My reading is in an hour! I can't find any of my belts!" Dad said while coming downstairs, no point asking me.
"Leather belts are made out of animals, so I gave them all a proper burial." Anna-Kat said to him, he just sighed. She was going a bit too far with this whole thing now.
"I will help you kill Tara Summers." Dad said while walking over to Mom.
"Okay. But I want this face to be the last one she sees. Honey, you look great. Don't worry." Mom said to Dad before walking over to the side. "Kids, I made a new recipe- -veggie chicken." Mom said while putting the chicken down. That wasn't veggie chicken though.
"What's it made out of?" Anna-Kat asked Mom, most likely chicken.
"Tofu." Mom said to her, Anna-Kat looked at her.
"And what's the bone made out of?" Anna-Kat asked her, it was made out of bone.
"Also tofu." Mom said to her, Anna-Kat believed her and ate it. Dad then got the 3 of us some before we had to start heading to Dad's reading.
"Good crowd." Dad said to us, not really.
"And that's why I love you." Mom said to him before we went to take our seats. Dad took the podium.
"Good evening. My name is Gregory Otto, and I am the author. I'd like to begin the evening with a reading from my book 'John Stuart Mill and the Consequences of a Thoroughgoing Empiricist Outlook.'" Dad said before opening the book to the marked page. "'London, 1806. A philosopher is born.'" He said before speaking, I managed to tune some of it out. I honestly couldn't listen to this anymore. When Mom got up I was intrigued. "'Whatever pleasure is derived from internal processes can be attribute to the external stimuli. The- -'" Dad started before Mom pulled his pants down. Taylor and I looked at each other and tried not to laugh. He pulled his pants back up and then continued reading. "'Mill's canonical work on utilitarianism, aptly entitled 'Utilitarianism', argues for a thoroughgoing empiricist, himself, a trait inherited from Bentham and all other conclusions...'" Dad continued before I zoned out for the rest once it ended I was glad. "Thank you." Dad said while shaking the last guys hand.
"I get what you did. You were publicly embarrassed, but you didn't quit." Oliver said to Dad, I don't think he knew this was happening.
"Yep. That's...why I has your mother do that. So you're not gonna quit ballet?" Dad asked him, hopefully not.
"No. I'm just gonna triple up on tights." Oliver said before sitting back next to Taylor. We were all talking while Mom and Dad were clearing everything up. Once we got home Dad was trying to find his belts.
"Anna-Kat, are you sure this is the place?" Dad asked her, he'd dug a few but couldn't find anything.
"Honestly, I don't remember. You put me on the spot and I pointed." Anna-Kat said, I was starting to think these belts weren't buried.
"Why don't you just buy a new belt?" Mom asked him.
"I'm not buying a new belt when there's a perfectly good belt buried somewhere in this backyard." Dad said before getting dirt in his eye and falling over the hose.
"Oh, my- -Greg." Mom said after his pants came down.
"See, Oliver? Another classic Otto story." Dad said before he stood on the end of the fake and the handle hit him in the face and he fell down.
"That must've hurt." I said while holding onto Taylor's arm.
"That's it. I'm not having kids. This madness ends with me." Oliver got out, I was glad one person wasn't making me an aunt.
