20. The Walk
It was close Anna-Kat's birthday and it was getting closer to the day that Mom promised she could walk to the library alone. But on top of that for dance we had to pair up the girls had to pair up with guys to do a couple dance. And I was with Javi, now you may be thinking why are you complaining he's the best male dance. Yes that was a good thing but people were treating us like a couple and to top it off Mom wanted this relationship to actually happen. Tonight, Javi was coming over to practice. We had ideas we just had to put them into reality. When we walked in I saw Cooper's drone meaning that he was here.
"I'm so sorry for what might happen." I said to Javi, he looked at me confusedly.
"You don't need to apologize nothings happening yet." He said to me in a whisper, I knew what was going to happen. We both went over to the counter and sat down.
"Get that out of my face!" Mom shouted before attempting to hit the drone. It then flew past us and right over to Oliver and Cooper.
"Your drone is so easy to control." Oliver said to Cooper.
"I didn't realize your mom was like that." Javi whispered to me.
"This is her one a good day." I whispered to him, thank god it wasn't a bad day.
"It's all about quality, amigo. This is the kind the CIA uses." Cooper said to him, I felt Javi look at me.
"Who's that guy?" Javi asked me, I always forgot that he was from Norwalk and didn't know all these rich people like us. He only knew my siblings and that was it.
"That's my boyfriend, Cooper." I said to him with a nod.
"I have the kind you get on sale that loses contact with the remote at around 6 feet and then gets stuck in a tree." Oliver said to him, Mom and Dad walked over to us.
"Hi, Javi, I take it you two are practicing today." Dad said to him with a smile.
"We are Mr. Otto." Javi said with a smile.
"Now this is the kind of person you should rather be with Y/n." Mom said, luckily for us Cooper didn't hear that comment.
"Oh, you got to get one of these- -it's 5 grand, camera included." Cooper said to him, Javi looked a bit shocked at that.
"5 grand? For a toy?" Mom asked while walking over to them.
"Well, it's not so much. See, think about it- -you'd spend that on a purse, right?" Cooper asked him, now that was just gonna make Mom tick.
"No, I wouldn't spend that on a car. Get this stupid thing out of my house and tell him to take his drone with him." Mom said to the two of them. We all knew that was coming except from Javi.
"Mom, you're not allowed to yell at Cooper. He's a guest." Oliver said to her.
"I wished we did this at my place now." Javi said to me I smiled.
"We'll do it at yours next time." I said to him.
"Anyone who eats at my house three times in a week is no longer a guest." Mom said to them, the front door then opened again. "Hi, guys." Mom said, Javi and I then moved to the sofa.
"Hi, Mrs. Otto, Mr. Otto. I like the sweater." Eyo said as him and Taylor walked in.
"Well, thank you, Eyo. I was thinking of getting rid of it. My shawl collars as often disparaged." Dad said while looking at Oliver and I. He should still get rid of it.
"Aw, don't listen to them. It's lit." Eyo said to him, that was the last straw for Oliver and I. We both stood up.
"No, it's not lit." Oliver said to him.
"It's horrible. A disgrace." I said to Dad, I couldn't lie.
"He's just kissing your butt. Your sweater is a pox on this family. Eyo, what have you done?" Oliver asked him, Dad was never going to get rid of that sweater now.
"Hey, don't yell at my boyfriend like that. I have a boyfriend." Taylor said before chuckling. "We're going upstairs to study." Taylor said before they both went upstairs.
"What a sweet kid." Dad said making Mom hum in response.
"Do let his smile fool you. Those two- -it is on like Babylon." Cooper said while putting his legs on the table.
"Nothing is on." Dad said to him, that's what Dad wanted to believe.
"Except your stupid feet on my furniture." Mom said before throwing señor Freezy at him. "What is wrong with you man?" Mom asked Cooper after he took his feet off the table.
"Sorry. I just figured since it wasn't fancy, I- -" Cooper started before being quiet.
"Cooper, it's best to stay quiet now." I said to him with a nod.
"Move slowly towards the door. Try not to show fear." Oliver advices him before Cooper started leaving with Oliver behind him.
"Ooh, let's have my drone film us cruising around on my Vespas." Cooper said to Oliver, I felt Javi looking at me.
"That is so much cooler than undocumented bike riding. You've got the life. I'm like one of those kids born in prison." Oliver said to Cooper as he walked him to the door.
"We should go upstairs." I said to Javi with a nod he nodded as well and we went upstairs.
"So that's your boyfriend?" Javi asked once we got upstairs.
"Yeah, that's Cooper." I said to him with a smile.
"He seems a bit..." Javi started before thinking.
"I know what you're thinking, snobby, obnoxious and rude but trust he's actually a really kind person." I said to him he smiled.
"I just didn't think that you'd end up with someone like that." Javi said to me, I wonder what he meant by that but we worked on our piece together. When it got to school the next day, I was just wanting to know what my friends would say.
"So, how was it with Javi?" Khad's asked me, I looked at her.
"He's sweet and we both agree that no one should ever have to come to my house." I said to them with a smile. We continued talking and when we the day was over Javi and I were practicing over a video call but I couldn't find my knee protectors.
"I'll be back just let me try and find my knee protectors." I said to him with a smile, they weren't in my room.
"Take as long as you need." He said to me with a smile. I went to Oliver's room.
"What are you looking for?" Oliver asked me, I gave him a look. "There not here." He said to me, I then gave him the 'where are they' look. "Anna-Kat's using them for her pony's." He said to me. I groaned.
"How do you two do that?" Cooper asked while looking between the two of us.
"We're twins Cooper, we know what the other one wants." I said to him with a smile. "Now, I'm off to get my knee protectors." I said to him before going to Anna-Kat's room. And when I got them back I put them on and Javi and I started working on our routine. Doing the knee drops was a lot better having protectors on.
"Y/n, I think I just became a tween!" Anna-Kat said while running into my room.
"I'm proud of you Anna-Kat. I'm surprised we all became tweens." I said to her with a smile. She then ran out. Javi and I then continued practicing. When I got home from practice at Javi's house the next day Oliver was there.
"Granola bar?" Oliver asked while offering one.
"Yeah." Cooper said while taking one.
"I'll take one as well. Practice has been hard recently." I said while taking one.
"Mnh, no bueno." Cooper said before putting the granola bar in the trash can and unfortunately Mom was around.
"Hey, I don't know what you do in your house." Mom said to him, he lived on an estate.
"Oh, it's more of an estate." Cooper said to her.
"Excuse me?" Mom asked while walking down the stairs.
"Well, there are several houses on the property." Cooper said to her.
"It's called 'Juniper Hill.' And there's this dude who welcomes you at the gate." Oliver started telling her, I loved Maurice.
"Maurice." Cooper and I said to him.
"Right, Maurice. He says, 'welcome to Juniper Hill,' and then gives you an iced tea, right?" Oliver said, I nodded. It's the best ice tea I've ever had.
"Stop talking. I do my care what kind of fancy-ass hill you live on. Here at the Otto Estate, we don't waste food." Mom said while stepping on the part that makes the trash can open. "Finish it." Mom said to him, she was being serious as well.
"Wait. Is she serious?" Cooper asked the two of us, she was and that was the scary thing.
"Mom, this is why no one ever waves us over to join them at the beach." Oliver said to her, that was true.
"And why we don't like having people over." I said to her with a nod.
"If he wants to be in our house, he lives by our rules." Mom said while glaring at Cooper. He picked the granola bar up from the trash.
"Dude, just eat it, man." Oliver said to him.
"Just don't think that's it's been in the trash." I said to him. He then started eating it.
"When you're done with that, I want you two morons to hang these in the trees, where the candy-cane forest is gonna be for Anna-Kat's birthday. Y/n, I need you to hot glue all of these candy canes onto the bench." Mom said to us, she knew I loved using a hot glue gun.
"Why isn't your party planner doing that?" Cooper asked her with a chuckle, he was digging himself into a hole.
"I don't hire party planners, and I don't hire hitmen. I do all the work myself. You feel me?" Mom asked before they both walked away. I took the candy canes and the glue gun and went outside to glue them onto the bench. I played some music on my phone. This was a relaxing job. It helped ease with stress and was just fun. By the end of the day I'd glued all of them on and they were dried on. When it got to the next day Anna-Kat went to the library and Cooper was invited over and he brought his drone.
"Anna-Kat is on her way." Dad said while him and Mom walked back inside.
"Good side- -we're not those crazy helicopter parents. Bad side- -we let our favorite child..." Mom started saying.
"You're not even hiding it anymore." Oliver said to her.
"She never has." I said to him.
"...go out into the big, scary world by herself. How can we do that?" Mom asked that's where Dad had come up with a plan.
"We're not. How we coming, boys and Y/n?" Dad asked, you see we were using Cooper's drone to follow Anna-Kat.
"It's up and running." Oliver said to him.
"We're following her with Cooper's drone." Dad said making mom gasp.
"That's brilliant." Mom said while walking over to us.
"Okay, we got eyes on her." Cooper said as we started following her.
"There's my baby! She's alive!" Mom shouted after gasping.
"Oh no, her shoelace is untied. She's gonna trip and crack her- -Oh, she didn't need us to tell her. She's doing it on her own." Dad said as we watched her.
"I think this was a good decision." Mom said to Dad, we then saw Taylor and Eyo.
"Oh, hey, there's Taylor and Eyo." Oliver said to us.
"I wonder where they're going." I said but I already knew the answer. Anna-Kat then passed them.
"Yeah, follow them." Dad said while taking control of the drone.
"What are you doing?" Mom asked him. I wanted to know as well.
"Dad, that's not the mission." Oliver said to him, he then flew the drone to Taylor and Eyo where they were both kissing.
"What the hell?" Dad asked.
"Told you- -it is on like James Caan." Cooper said to him, Dad then tried doing something
"It is." Dad said to us.
"Greg, it's fine. Keep your eyes on- -" Mom stated before Dad cut her off.
"That is not lit." Dad said, but the drone was getting out of control.
"Greg, stop!" Mom shouted at him we watched it crash into Taylor.
"Ooh." We all got out.
"Nice work Greg. Anna-Kat's off the radar. Why couldn't you let Eyo play a little grab-ass?" Mom asked him, there's nothing wrong with it.
"That done was $5,000." Oliver said to him, Dad then looked at Cooper.
"We'll call it even for the broken plate." Dad said before walking outside. I then went to my room. When it got to Anna-Kat's party the following day. I stayed with Hattie seeming as her younger brother was here. Javi was also here because of his sister. He was talking to my brother and Cooper.
"How's your practice been?" Hattie asked me as we both got some candy.
"It's been good. Javi and I make a good duo actually." I said to her with a smile.
"I'm glad yours is going well." She said to me.
"Hey! You can't talk about Mrs. Otto that way. Do you have any idea on what type of mother Mrs. Otto is? Sure, she might come across as rude and sarcastic and uncultured and- -" Cooper started, someone must've said something.
"Move to your next point." Oliver said to him.
"But Mrs. Otto is the best mom in town. I mean, look at this party. She did it all by herself without a party planner or nannies or chefs. Who here can say that they've ever done that? Heck, my last five birthdays, my parents haven't even been in the country. She doesn't care how rich my family is. And she doesn't kiss up to me like the rest of you. She calls me on my crap, which I kind of like. It means that she cares. So, everyone, calm down. She let her daughter walk to the library by herself. Big whoop. Now, leaver her alone or you'll all off the list for the Juniper Hill Winter Gala. Comprende?" Cooper said, it was nice for him to say that about Mom after the crap she's done to him this past week.
"Okay, cake time! Who wants gluten?!" Dad asked making the kinds cheer. "Hey, hey!" Dad shouted at them. When it got to the next family dinner out, Cooper was invited as well. Looks like Mom changed her mind about him.
