16. The Bag Lady

I would say it was another day to stay in all day but it wasn't because I was woken up by Mom. Anna-Kat was working on her fundraiser whilst I was just practicing. "Can you stop practicing for a little bit? You need a break." Mom said while walking into my room. I was so close to finishing the last half but apparently not. I stopped practicing and went downstairs to sit at the table so I could watch what I've done and look at areas for improvement.

"Oh. How'd it go?" Dad asked Mom when she got home.

"The manager exchanged the bags, and I finally cleaned out my purse. I found the key to who knows what, six Velamints." Mom said before going quiet. I knew where to improve now. "Have you been on the couch all day?" Mom asked Taylor who was watching a Kdrama I introduced her too. I heard the tv shut off.

"I was watching that!" Taylor shouted at Mom.

"Yeah, she's gone all in on those Korean soap operas." Dad said to Mom.

"I need to find out if Yay-Sun is going to marry that shipping magnate." Taylor said to Mom, I wasn't going to ruin it for her.

"It is time for you to find your new calling. Now, since there's been no motivation on your end, I've jotted down some suggestions of what could replace volleyball for you. Join the school paper." Mom said and I presume she started reading her list.

"No." Taylor responded.

"Art class." Mom said listening another.

"Not me." Taylor responded.

"Photography." Mom said, none of these were sports.

"Lame." Taylor said, unless it was to do with sports Taylor wouldn't be interested.

"You're lame." Mom said to her, I don't think she was.

"She actually is lame, on account of her ankle." Dad said to her, that didn't make her lame.

"I-I don't understand why you're forcing me to do something I don't want to do." Taylor said to Mom, no meant no. There was no point in forcing Taylor to join something she didn't want to.

"Because I know what's best. So you have one minute to decide on another activity, or I will decide it for you." Mom said to her, poor Taylor.

"Katie, she may just need a little more time to think about it." Dad said to her, exactly there was no point rushing her to a decision.

"Greg, side bar. Why the hell are you agreeing with her and not me?" Mom asked him, I forgot that we were only allowed to agree with Mom.

"Traditionally in a sidebar, we would have a discreet conversation to the side." Dad said to her, I thought that's how they worked as well.

"Mom, I want Dad to help me out with this one." Taylor said to them, I knew Mom wouldn't like that.

"You do?" Dad asked her.

"Yeah. You're also my parent." Taylor said to us, he really was.

"As a matter of fact, I am. Sure, I'll take this one." Dad said to her. Oliver and I then started talking business with Anna-Kat.

"Let's call Aunt Jean and start selling your paintings." Mom said to Anna-Kat while walking over to us.

"No. Oliver and Y/n said that calling people's not the way to save the most pandas." Anna-Kat told her, campaigning was the way to go.

"Since when are you both interested in anything Anna-Kat does?" Mom asked us.

"I'm not. And will never be." I said to Mom, it was true.

"Not now, not ever, but whoever sells the most panda paintings gets a GameStop gift card." Oliver said to Mom, it was a good thing but I would've needed it for somewhere more useful.

"You only have two more days, so you're working with me." Mom said to Anna-Kat there went our plan.

"Sorry Oliver and Y/n. I have to do what the Colonel says." Anna-Kat said, she just let it slip about what Mom's nickname was.

"The Colonel?" Mom asked us. We all went silent.

"Ohh." Anna-Kat said before putting her hands over her nose and mouth.

"Did she just call me 'The Colonel'? What is that about? Somebody speak! You, who still needs bedtime stories." Mom said before pointing at Anna-Kat. This was awkward as hell.

"Okay. Don't be mad. Your full nickname is Colonel Beatrice von Beige Underpants Control Freak." Anna-Kat told her, I wanted to leave. Dad came over to us.

"I don't know where to start first. Beige works under everything. And I am not controlling. You people just need to be told what to do." Mom said to us, classic Mom.

"Spoken like a true Colonel Beatrice Bon Beige Underpants Control Freak." Oliver said making me nod and Dad laugh. That was before Dad saw Mom's face.

"Not cool, buddy." He said, really he was on our side.

"If you all are so capable without me, fine. Greg, you help Taylor. Oliver and Y/n, you handle Anna-Kat. I'm out. But you'll all come running back, and when you do, I'll give you my best condescending Mom smile." Mom said before giving the smile.

"I'm having nightmares tonight." I said to them all. We all groaned.

"Oh, we hate that smile." Dad said to Mom, we couldn't lie.

"That's why I do it." Mom said before walking into the kitchen. "Ugh! These are defective, too! I'd strangle that manager with one of these if I didn't think it would break!" Mom shouted, it was best to jus5 ignore her.

"You guys have a nickname for me?" Dad asked us, well not yet. It was still in the works.

"Super Dad!" Anna-Kat with a smile, it was true.

"Oh, that's nice." Dad said with a smile before leaving.

"Way to think on your feet." Oliver said to Anna-Kat while nodding.

"And it was an accurate name as well." I said to her with a smile. The three of us left to start getting signatures at Stewart & Kingston's. We set a table up and started asking people.

"So, you think this is how you score yourself some new video games?" Mom asked Oliver and I.

"We do." Oliver and I answered.

"It's very easy to say no over the phone, Mom. But...how do you say no to this?" Oliver said while showing Mom Anna-Kat's face.

"It's true. She's so much cuter than the rest of you." Mom said before walking inside.

"Excuse me, sir. Would you like to buy a painting to save the pandas?" Oliver asked a guy that was about to go in.

"Actually, I'm late to meet a friend." He said to us.

"Did you hear that?" Anna-Kat asked him.

"Sadly I did." I said with a sigh.

"Hear what?" He asked us.

"It's the sound of pandas dying." She said to him. "'Save me.'" She said weakly to him.

"I'll take six." He said to us, and just like that we started on a good number. 6. When we got home, I was hoping to make Mom unhappy.

"Hey, guys. How'd it go?" Dad asked us when we got home, we smiled.

"We sold almost 200 panda paintings." Anna-Kat said to Mom, I knew she would be a little proud of us.

"What?" Mom asked us, her voice was a little high.

"Pandas saved. Bam!" Oliver said to her.

"Turns out we didn't need your help." I said to her with a smile.

"Well, looks like everybody is doing just great. I should probably go to someplace where I'm needed. I'm going to Jeffers." Mom said before walking into the kitchen.

"We're going with you. Anna-Kat and Y/n, let's up our game. I want pigtails." Oliver said to us, the last part was for Anna-Kat most certainly.

"Got it." Anna-Kat said before we walked off. When we got to Jeffers we set up a little table and collected more signatures. When Mom came running it it was our cue as well.

"Scatter! We'll reconvene at the Wendy's across the street." Mom said before we started collecting everything we scattered and then met at the car. I had one headphone in listening to music.

"We signed up 25 new people for panda paintings." Anna-Kat said to mom with a smile.

"Brings the total up to 221." Oliver said to Mom.

"We're doing well for ourselves." I said to Mom with a smile. She just chuckled.

"That's a lot of painting." Mom said to us, it was but we weren't doing it.

"What do I care? We'll just pick them up from the painting people." Oliver said making Mom chuckle. What was so funny?

"You are the painting people." Mom said to us, I didn't have any painting skills. I could not be a painting person.

"What?" Oliver and I asked her.

"Who did you think was going to paint? The pandas?" Mom asked us, not the pandas but the people owning the pandas.

"Maybe." Oliver said making Mom laugh.

"Boy, you are stupid." Mom said to us, I then put my other earphone in and turned the volume to the Max so I couldn't hear anything. When we got home I went to Hattie's house so that we could practice for our routine. We'd told the others we'd they weren't too happy but they understood and are working together. Got me out of doing some painting. After an hour I came home and started to see what was happening.

"Greg! Y/n! Taylor, get in here! All hands on deck." Mom shouted once I walked in the house. "We've got a situation. First thing that needs to be done is this..." Mom said before doing the condescending Mom smile. We all groaned, it was horrible. "Okay. Anna-Kat, get every art supply from upstairs that you've ever squirreled away and bring it down here. Oliver, Y/n, we need to paint, so cover every flat surface in the house." Mom said to us, now what did we have that we could use to cover the surfaces with.

"With what?" Oliver asked, we used the broken trash bags. When we began painting I realized mine weren't actually as bad as I thought they would be.

"Ah man!" Mom shouted, we saw that a bag had broken.

"Why do you keep using those?" Taylor asked her.

"Especially since we know that they're just going to break." I said to her confusedly.

"I don't know. I can't fix everything." Mom said after sighing, she could fix some things.

"You fixed everything for us today. It's time we return the favor. We're going to Jeffers." Dad said to her while standing up. We'd just finished our last panda paintings.

"Really?" Mom asked him.

"Absolutely." Dad said to her with a smile.

"What's the plan?" Mom asked with a smile, had Dad even gotten that far.

"I'll come with something, you'll nix it, and we'll do what you want to do." Dad said to Mom making her nod.

"I love it." Mom said to him. Once we arrived at Jeffers we already knew the plan. "Everybody knows what to do?" Mom asked, I did. Oliver, Mom and I were writing a message with the boxes.

"Yes. I keep the stock boy busy." Dad said to us.

"I'm on the lookout in the beverages." Taylor said to us.

"And I'll take out the manager." Anna-Kat said to everyone.

"Oliver, Y/n, you're with me. Let's move!" Mom said before we started executing the plan. We were turning the boxes around to make a message. But we had to make sure no one was coming. When we'd finished Mom whistled Anna-Kat back over. And just like that we'd taken down Jeffers. Only because no one is would buy bags. When it got to the next day yet again I was mainly practicing. But this was all worth it.
