Chapter 9
It was mid Sunday morning as Madison was walking up the steps to her house. Scott and Madeline dropped her off on their way out on a date. Madison slowly walked through the front yard, not paying any particular attention to the cars out the front of her house.
She walked up her front steps and as she entered the house she could hear music and chatter coming from the back half of her house. Closing the door behind her she walked towards the noise to investigate. When she entered the dining room there was a group of women- Madison's mum was one of them sitting around the table, with what appeared to be glasses of wine and chatting casually. There was also a number of people standing outside, with a few gathered around the BBQ.
Madison's mum looked up with a smile on her face, "Madi, welcome home. How was your sleepover sweetheart?"
Madison gave her mum a slightly surprised look. It was rare that she was on the receiving end of mother's good mood. However Madison wouldn't complain although she was suspecting that it might have something to do with the glass of wine she was having. "It was fun." She smiled.
"That's good."
Some of her mums friends smiled at her before she turned and headed upstairs to put her stuff in her room and to change her clothes.
Coming back down the stairs a few minutes later in her white 'love never fails' top and a pair of denim shorts. She noticed her brother standing outside so she decided to go see him. As soon as she walked out the door, her brother and her dog both came running towards her.
"Madsi! I missed you!" he yelled as he run towards her, flinging his arms around her when she bent down.
"You saw me two days ago though."
He pulled away from their hug, "I don't care! I still missed you," Madison stood up smiling and finally gave her dog some attention.
"Can I get a hug like that?"
Madison jumped at the sound of another voice behind her and quickly spun around, not expecting to be quite so close with the person behind her- so close that she almost head butted him.
Taking an instinctive step backwards she looked at him. He wore a cheeky and slightly teasing smile on his face. However Madi wasn't impressed. "Excuse me?"
"I'm pretty sure you heard me, princess."
Madison groaned, rolled her eyes, trying to stay calm, "I wish I hadn't, and to answer your question absolutely not. I don't hug assholes."
Daniel put his hand to his heart in mock hurt, "I'm offended."
She clenched her jaw, "Don't patronise me."
"What's got you in such a bad mood?"
"You're kidding me right?"
"No, I'm not. Did I do something?"
"You're a dick, you know that?"
"I'll take it I did do something then?"
"Yes. Look, just leave me alone, ok?"
"Just tell me what I did, Madi, maybe I could fix it."
"If you don't know what you did then you're more stupid then you look." With that she turned on her heel and headed back inside to get a drink.
Around half an hour later Madison was getting off of the couch once it was announced that lunch was served. She headed into the kitchen getting herself a plate and waiting for some of the people to clear so that she could get her food. She looked over to Daniel and he was also waiting for food. He reached up, running his hand through his hair. Madison noticed something on his upper arm that hadn't been there before. On his bicep there was a tattoo, there was name and a date in roman numerals but she wasn't familiar with roman numerals so she didn't know what date it was and from where she was standing she couldn't read the nam. She wondered what the date meant to him but wouldn't ask as she was still annoyed at him for ignoring her for a week and then accusing her of having a boyfriend and hooking up with Felicite. She was probably overreacting- she knew this- but it was the type of person she was. She was too emotional for her own good.
Daniels eyes diverted to hers and she quickly looked away and went and got herself some food. Everyone was sitting outside at the table there but Madison didn't want to interact with her parents friends so she went outside to the very back of their backyard and sat down on the swinging chair they had up there. Moments after she had sat down, she looked up to see Daniel walking towards her.
"Before you ask, no you cannot sit here." Madison stated.
"That's alright because I wasn't going to ask." And with that he sat down next to her.
She rolled her eyes and possibly a little too aggressively stabbed her salad with her fork, before bringing it up to her mouth and biting it. She glanced over at Daniel and he was eating his burger, looking straight ahead with a distant look in his eye, as if he was in thought.
Most of their lunch had passed in an uncomfortable and awkward silence. "Please just tell me why you're mad at me."
"You really don't know?"
"I have some ideas but none that I would think would make you this mad."
"You really wanna know?"
"Yeah I do, because I'm sorry for it." Madison doubted that he was but decided to tell him anyway.
She thought about it for a moment. About how to tell him why she was upset without revealing her feelings. "Well for starters you ignored me all week- which is fine but then you jump to massive conclusions when you see me hug a guy. That isn't cool. Which also I don't understand why on earth that it would matter to you because we aren't dating or anything remotely close to that- hell, I don't think we're even friends- so it shouldn't concern you who I hug or who I date for that fact. Then after you accuse me of that you go and ki-" Madison realised what she was about to say, 'go and kiss Felicite' but she stopped herself, she didn't want to make it seem like that had affected her in any way. As she said they were barely friends so it was none of her business what he did, nor was it his what she did.
"Go and do what?" Daniel urged for her continue.
"It doesn't matter," Madison tried to ignore the sinking feeling in her heart at the realisation that they probably wouldn't ever be more than friends, she knew this already but was refusing to let herself believe it.
"Madison." He sort of sighed but it wasn't in an annoyed way, she looked over to him and he wore a strange expression, one that she didn't know the meaning of.
"Just don't worry about it ok, it's not important." She turned to look back out in front of her.
However Daniel turned his body so that he was facing her, "are you mad that I kissed Felicite?"
Madison spun her head to look at him so quickly she almost got whiplash but while she was having a mild panic attack on the inside he looked perfectly calm as if they were having a conversation about the weather.
She didn't want to confirm nor deny what Daniel had said so instead she replied with, "what you do, or kiss, is none of my business."
He sighed again looking away for a moment before refocusing his attention on her. His brown eyes looking deep into her own, "Why can't you just give me a straight answer, Madi?"
She annoyingly pushed a strand of hair that had fallen out of her ponytail behind her ear, "I am."
"No, you're not. Is it so hard to talk about your feelings?" Although the statement sounded harsh he said it with a gentleness in his tone.
In a small, quiet voice, Madison replied with the most honest answer she had given since their conversation started, "Yes."
Ever since she was little Madison wasn't someone that would comfortably talk about her feelings. Most of the time she kept it in a dealt with it herself, because they were her problems and she didn't want to bother anyone else with them. However sometimes when they got too much to handle and she would have to talk to someone just to get it off her chest of to get some advice then normally it would be Madeline, Ruby or Delilah. She only really had conversations about her feelings with the people she was closest to and felt very comfortable with. Although there were times where she almost talked about her feelings with Daniel and if she had it wouldn't have been an in depth conversation- not because she wasn't comfortable with him because in a strange way she sort of was but because she was awkward and didn't bother him with her problems. Confessing her feelings about Daniel to Daniel however was something completely different and Madison doubted that she would ever be that comfortable with anyone.
The strand of hair that Madison had put behind her ear earlier blew back out and hung in front of her face but before she could put it back Daniel reached up and did it for her. Before he dropped his hand he gently run his knuckles over her cheekbone lingering for a moment. Madison held her breath the whole time and the butterflies in her stomach were going insane. She closed her eyes for just a moment but Daniel dropped his hand returning it to his lap.
"I'm sorry that I kissed Felicite the other night."
"Don't apologise for something you're not sorry for."
"I am though. I didn't know that it would upset you."
"Oh of course not. You didn't think kissing my ex best friend would upset me. Don't lie to me."
"Ok, honestly my intention wasn't completely to upset you. Apart from the fact that I was intoxicated, I was jealous. I saw you with that guy- Scott?" Madison nodded, confirming it, before Daniel continued. "I saw you with Scott and I got jealous and I shouldn't have, I know that now and I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about your relationship. Then I went to the party Friday night and I saw Ruby and Felicite there after a few I had already consumed some alcohol but I went over to them and said hey. My intentions weren't bad with her. I didn't have any intentions actually. I just wanted to say hey because I know she doesn't go to school anymore. We started talking, had more drinks. I have no idea where Ruby was. She was coming and going every now and then. Before I knew it we started kissing but I didn't initiate it- she did, but at this point I didn't know that Scott wasn't your boyfriend and I was jealous and I shouldn't have done it but I kissed her back and we continued kissing until I left the party. And as for the ignoring you all week, please don't take that personally. I was going through some stuff so I wasn't just ignoring you, I was ignoring pretty much every one. I just needed some time to myself."
She was slightly confused and had so many questions. The main two being: Why was he telling her all of this? and Why the hell was he jealous or care about the fact that she could be in a relationship. She decided to voice these questions.
"Why would me having a boyfriend make you jealous?"
"Geez, Madi, after all that do you still not get it?"
"No! I don't. I have no idea why you just told me all of that. I have no idea why you would care if I had a boyfriend! I'm just really confused about a lot of things."
"Madi, I like you ok!?" His voice was slightly louder than normal, trying to state his point.
Madison mouth hung open at his confession not being able to believe that what he said was true. Almost convinced that she was dreaming and any second she would wake up. At his confession- assuming that this was real life- her annoyance and slight anger towards him diminished greatly.
"You like- wait- like as more than friends- just what?" Madison couldn't even speak, her mind was racing trying to figure this out, along with her heart.
"Yes, Madi I like you, you heard me right the first time and yes as more than friends." He replied with a smile on his face and it was then that Madison realised that maybe he was feeling similarly to her on the current conversation. Maybe he wasn't as confident as he looked and this conversation about his feelings scared him as much as it scared her.
"Is this real life?" Madison didn't mean to say it out loud but as soon as she did the cutest smile appeared on Daniels face as he laughed slightly.
"Yes Madi, this is real life and if you don't mind, would you like to go on a date with me princess?"
