Chapter 4
"I'm sorry. Could I just ask if you could point me in the direction of the eleventh grade biology class."
I felt as if I was taking a chance. His smile seemed friendly and trusting at the time and his chivalrous act surprised me.
"I'll show you."
I didn't expect him to escort me, I genuinely wanted directions, but nevertheless I didn't say anything as I followed behind him to my class. Luckily the class wasn't too far from where we were standing and I made it there on time.
"Here we are," he said, stopping just before the door of the classroom.
"Thank you so much, I really appreciate it," I sincerely expressed my gratitude.
"No problem. I got to go now, but I'm sure I'll see you around," he said, strolling off to his class.
He didn't appear to be in a hurry to go to his class.
‘Probably a trouble maker,’ is what I thought. ‘But that is none of my business.’
I walked into the classroom which looked more like those fancy lecture classes in a college or a university. You know? Those ones that you usually see in movies. I looked around the room but could not find Jessica anywhere.
For a minute I thought that I was in the wrong class, but then I noticed that the group of pretty girls I had seen in my home room were seated in the first row. The three of them made me feel extremely uncomfortable.
And I had every right to be.
Even though they smiled and waved, sixteen year old me should have known better but I didn't so innocent sixteen year old me waved back and took a seat in the row just above them. It was a good thing that sixteen year old me didn't have the guts to sit next them.
The class settled down as the biology teacher walked.
A teacher that I will never forget might I add.
My reasons for the above sentence will follow shortly.
For starters he didn't care to greet the class and he seemed to be stuck up.
All the posters and models were related to biology so it had to be the right class. My assumption was validated by Jessica's late arrival.
As she barged into the classroom everyone referred their attention to her.
"Sorry I'm late sir," she apologized promptly.
"Miss Eaves. I am bewildered you are usually here on time," he said switching looks between her and the clock on the wall as if she was hours late to the lesson.
I his irrelevant retaliation towards Jessica's tardiness immediately told me that he was one of those teachers. The ones who make it their duty to piss you off on a daily basis. Just to be clear that was reason number two.
"Yeah sir I had to-".
"I don't want an explanation Miss Eaves, just go sit," he barked before she could finish her sentence. She made her way up the aisle where she had found an vacant space next to me.
"Oh and that's detention just by the way," he snapped. ' The people here do not mess around,' I thought to myself.
I knew that I was going to get off on the wrong foot with that guy because I liked to argue with teachers like him. And when I argued, I always won. It always has then and it definately does now.
"I thought you were in front of me," I whispered to Jessica
"I lost you, so I had to go back and look for you."
Hearing that made me feel bad because she obviously know that she would be late if she went back for me but still did it regardless. Now she has detention.
"Jessica I am really sor-" I began.
"Why do I hear talking?" The biology teacher turned around and scouted the room to find the culprit.
"You have ears," I blurted without thinking.
The entire room was dead quiet. All we needed were pins to drop if we wanted to make a racket during the silence.
"You're a biology teacher, you should know this," I add.
All of a sudden the timid girl had an outburst of confidence. I suppose she was just looking for an opportunity to rebel.
"Jessica, who is that next to you?" He asked
"She's new sir".
"I'm Kourtney. Sir," I added.
"Well Kourtney is there something that you want to share with the rest of the class?"
Every teacher's favourite line whenever they find a student talking or passing notes around the class.
Although, after hearing his words ,I realised that the perfect opportunity was within my reach if I wanted to make it up to Jessica.
I stood up and leaned towards him with both hands on my desk.
" Kiss. My. Ass," I said with nothing but a malicious smirk on my face.
After the entire class let out a synchronised gasp they all started whispering amongst themselves.
"Alright! Okay! Settle down now!" he yelled above the tumultuous class.
"Kourtney you got what you wanted ; detention for you and Jessica!" he grunted. And there's reason number three.
I sat back down in my seat quite pleased with myself and the way in which I handled things. It hadn't really hit me then but I did have feeling that I was going to regret it.
Did I regret it then? I can't say. Do I still regret what I had done then?
Jessica put her hand on my shoulder as a gesture of gratitude and looked at me with a smile.
'I think I'm going to enjoy Bellevue High.' Was my exact thought.
Oh Shame. Innocent little me.
