Chapter 34
I reminded myself repeatedly that it was just a mistake and that there was no reason for me to retaliate.
"I am so, so sorry! ", exclaimed the apprehensive waitress. "I'll help you clean-"
"It's nothing to be worried about. I will sort myself out," I said cutting her off. I picked up her tray from the floor as well as the plastic cup that she dropped, and I handed it back to her. "I should've been more careful," I added.
'It could've been worse,' I thought to myself. 'I could've had Trent's jacket on.'
I was humiliated but I tried to hide it. My group of 'friends' stared at me, and it only made me feel more uncomfortable. I felt like they were all secretly criticising me. I just had to turn the other cheek. Apparently, all it took for me and Trent to be alone was to have my T-shirt messed by a clumsy waitress because after my incident they were all keen on going back home with Brady.
"See you on Monday," said Jessica. She was about to hug me but then dropped he arms as remembered that I was covered in a mocktail. That hug turned into a high five. We said our goodbyes before watching our friends leave the restaurant. Trent put his arm around my shoulder. "You smell very sweet," he said.
"I feel very sticky," I said. "I need to change."
"Let's get you to the car then."
On our way out, he grabbed a handful of moist towelettes. Although I was humiliated, I still had the urge to laugh at my own misfortune. I got into the passenger's seat but asked Trent to stand outside of the car while I switched shirts. It was cold and all I had as back-up was my plain white tank top. '1:25' was shown on the clock of the dashboard. I was silent and relucent to do what I needed to do.
"So, are you going to change?" he impatiently asked.
"I can't change. The door is open."
He wound down the window a little, stepped back then closed the door.
"Better?" He asked.
"Turn around," I demanded.
"Geez."
He mumbled something to himself as he turned around.
I removed my wet and sticky t-shirt then rushed to put the tank top on. The last thing I need was to be seen. I move even faster after Trent 'wolf whistled'. "Shut up," I snapped. "I hope you're not looking," I added. His snickering annoyed me. "Okay, I'm done."
"Finally," he said before walking around the car and getting in. "Nice bra by the way, " He added as he started the car. My eyes expanded as his words sunk in. "I told you to turn around!" I yelled.
Small things like that made me somewhat sceptical of Trent at times. Those red flags were raised high whenever he acted like an average boy. But how could have I expect him to be any different when they're all wired the same way.
"Did you really think that I wasn't going to take a peek? Besides it's not like it's my first time seeing a girl's rack."
I was surprised that my eyes didn't fall out of their sockets after hearing those words.
"Rack? What is wrong with you!" I exclaimed in disgust.
"I must say you've got some rack," he smirked.
I gasped. "Can we please talk about something else other than my chest!" I'll admit, it was kind of flattering, but I was a fairly reserved teenager who believed that he had no right to be so rude. "Just calm -. Never mind, I forget that last part I was told to never tell a woman to calm down." "I'm not a woman, I'm still a young girl."
"Not with that rack," he chuckled. Annoyed, I crossed my arms, turned my back to him and stared out the window. "I'm sorry. Last one I promise," he said with sincerity. "Kourt don't be mad at me." He's tone became softer. Whenever it did it meant that he was gentle.
Somehow, I found the situation to be light-hearted again and not long after that, I couldn't contain myself. I started laughing about everything that happened. He was confused. "I'll never understand girls," he said. "Don't worry about it," I assured him after taking a deep breath. "I just had a good time."
"I'm glad," he smiled. "Even though things didn't go according to plan."
Unexpectedly, something ran across the road but we both didn't know what it was. It happened so fast that Trent held his arm out in front of me and turned the wheel fast to avoid hitting it.
"Can you put on your seatbelt," he pleaded.
And after experiencing what almost could've been a car accident, I still had the nerve to say: "No."
"Miss Kidman you are so stubborn?"
"Why don't you put your seatbelt on, Carter?"
He sighed heavily. "Must you be so difficult?"
I had to be. In the end he still obeyed and put his belt on. He expected me to do the same. I didn't have much of a choice. "So, what's our plan next Saturday?" he asked. "Next Saturday?" I asked bemused.
Life beyond my bedroom window seemed perfect. Trent wanted me to decide on what our plans for the next Saturday would be. He told me to keep it between us so that we wouldn't have unwanted company. It was nice to feel valued by another human being who valued spending time with me. It was a fairytale, until later in the week when I realised that I had to set some boundaries. Later that week, reality kicked in.
But we're still approaching that story.
