Chapter 20
My parents reversed off the driveway then drove off leaving Jessica and I to run around my bedroom like headless chickens. My heart skipped a beat just thinking about my prison break.
'If something goes wrong; then I am going to be in deep shit,' I constantly told myself.
But the fact that Jessica was with made me feel a little more at ease for some reason.
We checked ourselves out in the mirror before we left.
We triple checked.
"Hold on I just need to make sure that there aren't any appliances left on or else I will really be in shit," I told her.
"That's okay I'll help you, let me get the keys for you," she said.
After scouting out the rooms, we both recieved a text on the group chat from Chad.
Which was our cue.
"Let me grab my bags. I'll leave them in Trent's car while we are at the party," said Jessica.
I locked the door behind Jess. "Are you ready for this?" She asked bursting with excitement. "I guess so ,"I responded.
We walked down to the car and got into the back seat. After getting in, Trent started the car and took off. Jessica was seated behind Chad :who is in the passenger seat.
"Damn girls!" Exclaimed Chad.
"Looking fine! Kourt this is your last chance to show up as my date."
I felt my nerves acting up again and my stomach turn. Remembering what Jessica told me made me feel even worse.
'Please don't throw up. Not here. Not now'.
"As a matter of fact Chad, Kourtney is already going as someone else's date," Trent interrupted.
' What is he going on about?'
"Oh yeah? Who's that?" Chad asked
"She won't tell me , but I know that it's not you," Trent answered.
He winked at me as my eyes met his in the rear view mirror.
'It's not you either,' I thought.
"Oh, burn son!" Shouted Jessica. Chad snickered quietly to himself.
"Is that so?" he turned back to get validation from me. "Yes," I answered without thinking. Chad is cool but he has been pestering me from the time he met me.
"Ayt cool we'll just keep it on a friendly level. For tonight," he smirked then faced the front.
It was a breezy evening. Watching the trees swaying was somehow the perfect distraction for me. I was tempted to tell Trent to turn the car around and that I didn't want to go anymore but I was able to calm down before I could change my mind about the whole. Jessica sang along to the radio and Chad complained about her voice. Trent was surprisingly silent.
We slowed down as we approach a yard that had a few cars parked outside it.
I couldn't tell if we were at the right house because I couldn't hear music and people but the front yard was empty. Trent ,Chad and Jessica jumped out of the car while I stayed in allowing my thoughts to get the best of me. Trent opened my door and held out his hand. "Miss Kidman," he said. I nervously got out of the car and allowed him to escort me.
Jessica and Chad ran inside while Trent gave me a few minutes to prepare myself.
I was stunned by the facade of the huge house.
Trent finger tips gently touched my back and slowly pushed me towards the house.
"You look nice", he finally said. "Thanks," I responded.
"Seriously, I think I might have a problem with being a bodyguard tonight," he smiled devilishly.
'A Bodyguard?'
I stopped in my tracks. "Why? Who are you going to have to ' protect me from'? " I asked sarcastically gesturing air quotes.
"Probably everyone at this party," he answered.
He lead me towards the door. He handled me so much with care; you would swear that I was a priceless antique.
"Maybe even myself," he whispered in my ear.
I'm going to pretend like I didn't hear that. We entered through front door. A huge lounge filled with teenagers, loud music and flashing lights was a bit overwhelming for me, although I imagined that it would be more loud and hectic but I suppose those only applied to college parties. "Let's go out to the back!" Trent shouted above the noise. I followed him through the crowd. On our way out I tried to process what was going on around me. Everyone was laughing and screaming. The furniture was clearly out of place and the floor was littered with red cups.
I noticed Natalie, Shannon and Kristine dancing on the kitchen counter.
Drunk as ever.
It was very interesting.
And to think, those girls were soo worried about how they looked and how great they bodies were.
Trent and I came out to a luxurious backyard crowded with people, loud music, a pizza hut and a swimming pool. "Something to eat?" Trent asked in my ear. I picked up a fresh scent of mint and cologne. "No thanks," I answered. I followed him until we get a less crowded area in the yard where we found Chad, Jessica, Trina and Brady. I noticed that they all had red cups.
"Kourtney Kidman look at you!" Exclaimed Brady. He had one arm around Trina's waist while his cup was in the opposite hand.
Immediately, I notice the mean look on Trina's face.
"Trent my man, you want a drink?" Brady asked. "I can't right now. Maybe later," he answered. "She'll just have a soda," Trent added, gesturing toward me. "Let her speak for herself Trent," Chad snapped. "Why? Isn't it obvious that Trent has to babysit her," Trina laughed maliciously.
I never really 'hated' anyone but back then; Trina just so happened to start off the list.
"No I'm actually good thanks," I said to Brady. There was a short silence and I assumed that everyone must have thought that I was hurt by Trina's comment. In those few minutes, I successfully brushed off her empty insult and focuser more on being present.
"Kourt don't mind Trina, she can be mean when she's drunk" Jessica said breaking the silence.
"Oh, I'm not drunk Jessi," She fired back, sounding proud of herself. "I just-" she started but I thought quick enough. "It's ok Jess. I don't give two shits about Trina's meaningless opinions."
"Ouch! Trina I felt that for you girl!" Chad exclaimed making a scene. "Miss bad ass strikes again ladies and gentlemen," chuckled Brady.
Trina punched his shoulder then downed the rest of her drink. I looked around until I noticed the huge, sly grin on Trent's face. I couldn't help but smile when his eyes met mine. They appeared luminous due to the lights reflecting off of them .
"I love this song! Kourt do you want to dance?" Jessica asked.
That song was ancient.
But hey; who doesn't love Beyonce? Before I could answer her, she grabbed my hand but just as she was about to run off with me; My 'babysitter' cleared his throat loudly. "Oh I'm sorry fairy godmother but may I borrow Cinderella?"Jessica asked sarcastically. "Permission granted child," he answered in a woman's voice.
She rolled her eyes then pulled me towards the ' dance floor', where we could hear the music. We both started dancing casually. Two girls that I have never met before joined us but I assume they knew Jessica.
The song changed to hip hop song that nobody knew. "Does anyone know how to dance to this?" Jessica yelled over the noise.
I gently moved them out of the way to make space for myself.
It was as crazy and daring as it was unforgettable. I surprised them as well as myself. I knew what I was doing but I didn't think that I would have the guts to do it especially at my first party. And in just a matter of seconds people surrounded me.
People started cheering me on. It was strange because not everyone knew me but then again; word gets around.
I went on until the music stopped and to be honest I was a little dizzy in the end because I was so overwhelmed by the audience.
I was out of breath and needed water. Chad popped out of no where and threw his arm over my shoulder.
"Let's hear it for my girl Kourt!" He exclaimed sounding like a t.v host. Everyone clapped and cheered for me then carried on with what they were previously doing. I realised that my friends ; and Trina, had been watching me.
" Where did you learn to move like that Kourtney!" Jess asked shocked out of her wits.
" My parents always expected me to do something after school so hip hop class was one of my extra activities," I explained. Trent handed me a soda knowing that I needed it. I desperately grabbed the cup and gulped down half of it.
"No problem,"he winked. Embarrassed by my rudeness, I smiled then thanked him while trying to hide my humiliation.
Out of the blue Trina and Brady started snogging so the rest of us took a step back to let them have their moment.
"I need to go to the little ladies room," I laughed.
"Walk her," Trent commanded Jessica.
Without arguing, she led me through the crowd and we disappear into the house.
I assumed it was not the first time a party was held here because Jessica found the bathroom with ease. ' Which kid has the power to host parties over and over again with their parents.?' I wondered.
But it turned out that Olivia's parents were always on business trips.
With all the plastic cups laying around, I expected to wait in a line to go to the bathroom but surprise surprise: it was empty.
" You don't have to wait for me," I told Jess. I didn't really need to use the bathroom anyways, I just needed to wash my face. I was not used to being around a lot of people and it was kind of overwhelming.
I stood in front of the sink after rinsing my face and took in deep breaths.
I focused on my breathing as well as the noise taking place on the other side of the bathroom door. Suddenly, the door swung open. A girl leaned on the door for support. I would've lecture her for not knocking, but it was obvious that she was intoxicated. It's kind of scary. Can her body handle it? Did she over do it?
"Sorry about that," she laughed. "Chad is looking for you."
'Do I listen to the drunk girl or do I just smile and nod?'
She leaned towards me and without thinking I stepped aside. I watched her as she dashed for the toilet. Body suspended over the toilet, she threw up. I held back her hair. "Thanks," she huffed. "Chad is in the next room."
Even though she was drunk; I still decided to look for Chad, just in case he was looking for me. I left the bathroom to search for him. The next room was dark and I assumed that he wouldn't be there, but I was proved wrong when a hand grabbed me and pulled me into the dark.
Immediately my instincts kicked in and I started to panic. "Chill. It's me," he laughed. 'We've only been here for a little while and he is already drunk.' The smell of alcohol struck fear but I didn't dare show it.
"What the hell Chad. You've got some nerve," I snapped coldly. "Where's your date?" He asked. This again? My back was against the wall and my hand was on the door handle. The door wasn't closed but given the state that he was in he was probably capable of doing what he wanted.
"Relax." He got closer to me and my alert levels increased. "I'll see you outside. When we're around witnesses."
He ignored me and attempted to get a grip on me but was quick enough to pull away.
"Come on Kourt , just a few seconds in the naughty corner!" I heard him call out as I left the room. Ignoring him, I continued to make my way to the backyard where I expected to meet the others. Jessica was nowhere to be found and neither was Trent. The only people I could see were Brady and Trina but they were still sucking each other's faces.
"There you are!" A hand grabbed my shoulder from behind.
"Chad, I swea-" I stop after turning around and realising that it was Trent and not Chad. I was actually relieved to see him.
" I went to all three bathrooms looking for you," he yelled over the noise. "Let's go outside."
We made our way outside to a less noisy and crowded area.
"I knew you would have a good time tonight. And to think; you were going to spend a good night at home."
'Am I really relieved to see him?'
I'll admit that I was happy to see him because I felt safe around him but did he really have to make it obvious that he was right about me going out to that party?
"Would it seem inappropriate if I said you look incredibly hot?"
'Would it be? '
"Uh..."
I was a little anxious so I looked around the yard thinking of what to say next.
And there, on a bench just next to the door of the house-sat Natalie, Shannon and Kristine.
It was almost as if they had been watching me the entire time. My emotion dropped and the atmosphere changed immediately. Remembering that Kristine was caught with Trent at some party made me feel uncomfortable. I knew it wasn't serious but a death stare made it seem as if I was on her territory.
"What's wrong?" Trent asked.
The vibration of my phone in my back pocket instantly made me foreget about what was happening around me. I had a bad feeling in my core.
And it was a bad feeling for the right reason.
When I pulled my phone out of my back pocket, the screen light up to reveal that my mother had sent me a text message.
And immediately; I started to panic.
"Oh shit!" I exclaimed.
"What?" Trent asked.
"Shit!"
"Kourt! What?"
I showed him the messages from my mom and straight away I could tell he had the same anxious feeling.
