Chapter 19
I introduced my dad to Jessica then we were all quiet after that. I was actually grateful for the silence because my parents were often guilty of embarrassing me. I sat in the back with Jessica simply because it was her first time being around one of my parents.
It was quite cute actually. Watching your best friend pretend to be Soo innocent in front of your parents.
" So how was school?" My dad asked. I assumed he was asking both of us because he looked at us through the rear view mirror.
"It was great," Jess answered.
Something I didn't really want her to say.
"Oh! So what's his name," my dad smirked.
I was literally dying in the seat. Jessica was confused and only figured out his joke seconds later.
"Funny," she laughed.
It wasn't really funny
" But I only go to school to learn Mr Kidman," she added sincerely.
"I don't know who you kids of today are trying to full. We were your age once upon a time," he chuckled.
‘ Kill me now,’ I thought.
Jessica saw my father's words to be light hearted and playful. She wasn't at all offended. I could've also found it amusing but I already knew that my father was being serious.
He always thought girls filled their world boys. "And you Kourt how was school," he asked.
"Fine," I answered with a fake smile.
Just to be nice.
It wasn't long before we reached home. Thankfully. As soon as we entered the house Jess and I went to my room to settle down. I closed the door so that my father wouldn't eavesdrop.
"I love your house!" She chimed.
"Thanks Jess."
It wasn't such a bad place. I suppose one would get tired of it if they had to spend hours upon hours and day after day there but other than that I was actually a nice house.
"And your room! You have a window seat!"
She ran over to the window where she sat and stretched her legs across the seat. She opened the window which allowed the fresh air to invade my room. "This is nice," she said nonchalantly. She was a guest and I wanted her to be comfortable and feel relaxed but I also wanted to know about her friends.
" Aren't you going to tell me more?" I asked timid.
" Oh yeah!" She sat up straight. She rubbed her hands together while deep in thought. " Where did I stop again?"
"Trina and Brady," I answered.
"Right! Yes. Trina. We only met Trina when we got to highschool and ever since then Brady has been head over heels for her. He has asked her out but… this is as far as Trina is willing to go.”
"And... Trent?" I asked trying not to make things look suspicious. I had been dying to hear about that joker from the time we left the school.
"My oldest friend. Trent and I go way back. From kindergarten. An entire twelve years. I wouldn't say he's a player... I mean. He has had three official girlfriends that he liked but I guess that was more like puppy love. Other times he just messed around," she explained.
"Messed around?" I ask.
"Yeah like at parties. There was this one time where we went to a party and I caught him in another room with Kristine but he told me that it wasn't serious and they both knew that."
Somehow, something in my gut lead me to asking the following:
"Did she know it wasn't serious?"
"Yes but it didn't end so well for her because she found herself having some ‘ attachment issues’. ”
I kind of regretted it because hearing her words made me change my whole view of Trent. He did seem more decent in comparison to Chad because he made it clear that it wasn't a serious relationship but it was still peculiar.
"There were many cases where girls got too attached to Trent. There was this one time when he met some psychotic chick. She kept stalking him, following him home and left notes in his locker. It was so funny," she laughed.
It was pretty disturbing to find out that there are those types of people in the world but maybe they were just misunderstood, what if she just really liked Trent. Really, really liked him. It was cute in a creepy way...
I guess.
"What happened to her?"
"She moved out of town. I can't remember if she was the last one though because Trent hasn't been in any relationship since ninth grade." She further explained.
‘Wow. Single for two whole years? then again, I have been single for .... who knows how long’
"Sounds like he learnt his lesson if you ask me," I laughed.
"I wouldn't bet money on that. Trent is soo stubborn. I told him to stop sleeping around with random girls at parties but he didn't listen to me," she roller her eyes.
That was unexpected.
I very easily believed the; "he's a total ladies man" part but I did not find it in me to believe that he was "some charismatic panty ripper."
Before I could take time to compose of myself there was a knock on my door.
And I got so scared that I almost thought my soul was going to ditch my body.
The door opened slightly and my mother peered from behind the door.
"Hello," she said looking at Jessica.
"Hello Mrs Kidman," Jessica , jumping to her feet.
Jessica tried so hard to make a good first impression that day. I guess it was a common case of friend's instinct . Everyone has witnessed the devil they know disguise themselves or atleast put on the facade of an angel.
"Kourtney, I'm going to put a pizza in the oven in incase you get hungry tonight," said Denice.
"You don't have to. If I get hungry I'll make a toaster cheesed.”
"I don't want you to turn on the stove when I'm not at home Kourt and if Jessica gets hungry she can help herself."
"Thanks Mrs K. May I call you Mrs K?" She asked.
"Sure, why not. I like it," my mother said.
That was the start of ther beautiful yet scary friendship.
"What are you girls up to?" she asked, being nosy as usual.
"Well I was just about to give Kourtney makeover just for fun. I promise I won't over do it with the make up," Jessica quickly added.
‘What is she doing?’
Something told me to play along so I just smile and agreed with whatever she had to say. Lying to people I didn't know was soo easy but lying to my parents was a challenge.
And lying to my parents without a plan was as good as setting myself up for the worst.
I couldn't tell if she was buying it but then again, I could never really figure out Deniece Kidman. The confused look on her face scared me but I remained resilient and I took a deep breath in.
"Have fun. I'm going to get ready," she said.
"Will do!" I exclaimed enthusiastically as she left the room.
I close my door and let out a sigh
"That was close," I hissed to Jessica.
"At least now we can get ready early , she'll just think that we're fooling around with make-up like five year old girls," Jessica whispered.
Jessica was obviously used to being sneaky. The stunt that she pulled did not scare her the least bit, however she did find it all amusing.
"Show me your clothes, let's pick an outfit," she chimed.
I opened my closet where everything was neatly put away. I categorise all my clothes by colour and fabrics.
"Wow, your clothes look expensive!" She whispered stunned.
"I take my wardrobe very seriously,"I whispered back.
She picked out my favourite white designer jeans, and a black off-the-shoulder bodysuit. Luckily they both didn't need ironing. I wanted dress in a grunge style but I didn't have time to be fussy.
I took out my black Nike Air Max with secret socks.
I was starting to become more and more hesitant about breaking out. The thought my parents catching me in the act was not the only thing that played on my mind but the thought of what Jessica told me about Trent was lodged in my brain.
"Should I iron my hair and make a high ponytail?" I asked her. " I have and even better idea," she smiled.
She made me sit at my desk where she untied my hair. She ran her fingers through my curly locks then draped my hair over my shoulders.
"I've been dying to do your hair since the day I met you," she giggled. " Can I just make three braids on either side and leave the rest of it flow past your shoulders?"
" Sure."
I actually trusted her.
Time passed and it started to get dark outside. Jessica applied my make-up perfectly and inconspicuously. While she did her make up I went downstairs to bid farewell to my parents before they left.
"What do you think?"I asked my parents. I stood on the step in home clothes and make-up.
Because nothing is wrong with that.
"Kourt! I never thought I'd live to see the day you wear make-up!" My mother exclaimed.
My mother knows that I'm not a big fan of make-up.
"You look nice," my dad said sincerely.
I wen down to kiss them each just as they were about to exit. They left the house after giving me a list of things to remember. My mother reminded me to lock the door about several times. I ran upstairs to my room after closing the door and letting them out.
"Jess, it's time!" I shouted.
