Chapter 10
I had let out yet another sigh into the throw pillow. That sigh was meant to be a scream of frustration. I held back my anger like I usually did.
I got up off the sofa and I stood to my feet with the intention of being as subtle as possible. My father stood next to the television, arms folded and wide-eyed, intently waiting for an explanation.
"Hello father," I said with sarcasm. I learnt a thing or two from Trent and decided to give his malicious smirk a try.
"Detention on your first day? You never get detention. "
"I'm Sorry. It's a first and last. Promise."
I drew an invisible cross on the right side of my chest with my index finger.
At that point, all of me was prepared to die.
"Why didn't you call me?" He asked.
I guess he had mistaken my nonchalance for fear because he started to become increasingly outraged. I had no reason to be scared because I didn't do anything wrong.
" What do you mean ? You asked me if I remembered the way home, remember? That's why you let me find my own way home, right? "
"I didn't think you were actually going to walk all the way home. Look at the time, it's five thirty!" He furiously threw his hands towards the clock ."If your mother was home early, she would have been stressed out."
I looked at him with a huge grin across my face. "Who said I walked?" I asked. My father stood there silenced and confused. "I took the bus."
' Einstein.'
While my father either tried to find the right words or attempted to compose of himself, I went to my room to do my homework. I held closed the door while firmly holding the nob. I put my head against the door trying to hold back buckets of tears.
Stressed thy name is Kourtney
But I remained resilient, brushed off any negative feelings and took my books out of my bag at my desk. I was startled by the door that was flung open.
I totally understood that I didn't pay the bills under my parents' roof, but I knew that I did have the right to privacy and therefore knocking would have been the most appropriate thing that my father could have done.
"I just have one question. Did your detention have anything to do with that kid?"
" Oh my G- No! what is wrong with you?"
I wish it did though.
"Watch the tone," he warned me. "On second thought, I don't think I want you hanging out with him. He's probably the reason for this act of rebellion."
"What act?" I asked, beyond confusion. Act of rebellion? We both knew that I've been rebellious from freaking thirteen. He could've said that Trent influence my attitude but even that assumption would've been incorrect.
Incorrect at that time.
Did Trent influence my behaviour at any other stage of my life?
Well... if I had to count...
"Look I haven't got time for this. I have homework and I know you want me to pass, so... I'll talk to you tomorrow," I explained more subtle than before.
I turned back to my books holding back tears. My head started to pound and my temper gradually increased. He left my room, knowing that he pushed me too far. As the door closed, I put my head on the desk.
" I cannot keep doing this," I whispered to myself.
With courage, I continued with my homework until it was completed. The last bit of sunlight for the day spilled into my room through the window. I left my desk to sit by my window and soaked up that bit of sun before it had set. It was warm against my face and was merely tranquilizing.
A nice way to end off a terrible day if you ask me.
I stared out my window drifting away into a million thoughts. I noticed the trees slowly swaying. The small bright green leaves grabbed my attention. It was almost relatable; young and green.
But knowing that time would pass by and that they would fade into a sombre brown remained me of reality.
Eventually they would fall off the branches. Like I was patiently waiting to the fall off mine.
I wasn't always like that. I swear, I used to be the happiest child alive. Until I saw the world for the first time. Losing loved ones, breaking from all the pressure and just realizing that this wasn't worth it anymore.
My desire to go on was slowly deteriorating.
