V2 Ch10: "Reconnaissance"
(Almost there folks. The big volume 2 finale is almost here...im sorry for this chapter taking so long. Im doing my best to get back into writing this. I genuinely love to, but I get sidetracked with all sorts of shit lately. Whether it be work, moving forward with the navy or even just trying to do something with my friends. Either way I hope you enjoy this.)

Bullhead
Mid-day
3rd Person Pov
Oobleck: "While I admire the tenacity, why would Japan continue to fight after such a devastating loss of life? There shouldn't have needed to be a second bombing! And frankly I find it disturbing that the U.S was willing to commit to such an act!"
Y/n: "It was long before my time Doc, but from what I hear Japan at the time was, in my opinion, stupidly iron willed. And while I don't agree with what happened, I can't change it. We can only hope they learn from history."
The bullhead swiftly flew through the air as it carried Oobleck and all of team RWBY towards their destination, whatever it may be.
During most of the trip, Y/n had been holding a rather intense conversation over history on earth, mostly the first and second world wars.
Oobleck: "I suppose your right, but one can't help but wish they could have been there to stop it somehow. If someone had proposed to me the idea of wiping 146,000 people off the planet like that, I don't believe I can name how many of their bones id have broken."
Having had the statement brewing in her for a while, Yang took her opportunity to speak.
Yang: "Gotta say Doc, I never took you for much of a fighter."
Straightening himself from his small outburst, he fixed his glasses and responded.
Oobleck: "I'll admit I fancy myself as more of an intellectual, but I've had my fair share of tussels!"
Scratching her head in confusion, Ruby spoke.
Ruby: "Like the mushroom?"
Blake: "Those are truffles."
Ruby: "Like the sprout?"
Yang: "Those are brussels."
Y/n: "He means fights Rosebud."
Deciding to ignore the teams banter, Oobleck continued.
Oobleck: "Besides, because my expertise in history as well as my dabblings in archeological surveys, our dear headmaster saw fit to assign me to this particular...assignment!"
Still thoroughly vexed by their assigned huntsman, Weiss couldnt help but question.
Weiss: "What does history have to do with this?"
Almost seeming offended, Oobleck doesn't hesitate to get in Weiss's face as he awnsered, the poor girl leaning back slightly at the huntsmans proximity.
Oobleck: "Why, what a preposterous question, you silly girl! Why, history is the backbone of our very society! And the liver! Probably the kidneys, if I were to wager."
Y/n: "What about the knees?"
Oobleck: "That as well!"
Stuttering out of pure perplexity Weiss asks again.
Weiss: "What does all of that even mean?"
Almost with a sigh, Oobleck finally decides to satisfy the girl with a more direct awnser.
Oobleck: "The southeast quadrant outside of Vale is home to wild forests and deep caves, but it is also the location to one of the kingdom's greatest failures!"
Surprising most, Ruby interjects.
Ruby: "Mountain Glenn."
Yang: "That's right! It was an expansion of Vale... but in the end it was overrun by Grimm and fenced off from the rest of the city."
Y/n: "Damn..."
Oobleck: "Correct! And now it stands abandoned as a dark reminder."
Seemingly catching on to where Oobleck was going, Blake speaks.
Blake: "And a likely place for a hideout..."
With another push of his glasses, Oobleck smiles in a way that could only be described as mischievious.
Oobleck: "Precisely!"
Almost as if summoned through conversation, a large destroyed city barrels into view through the bullheads open side doors. The entire ruin, rusted, faded and broken, only serves to add an almost foreboding feeling.
Aside from the Grimm, which are barely even alive...the entire city was completely, utterly, dead. This, was Mountain Glenn
Y/n: "Well, aint no time like the present!"
Wasting no time as the Bullhead began to hover above the ground, Oobleck and RWBY leap from the side door, all landing with weapons drawn, save for Y/n who was wielding his large revolver, and a semi-auto pistol. Oobleck simply held his thermos in hand. His casual demeanor quickly vanishes however as he stores the thermos in his pack, and stands before the group of students.
Oobleck: "Children! While you may still be students, today your first mission as huntsman and huntresses begins! From this moment forward, you need to do exactly as I say! Understand?"
Receiving silent nods of understanding, his attention very suddenly diverts to Ruby.
"Ruby! I do believe i told you to leave all your bags at school!"
Realizing she's been called out, Ruby shifts nervously in place as she responds to the historian.
Ruby: "But, uh, you hadn't told us to listen to you yet! So...I didnt."
Oobleck seems almost in thought of his response before he resumes.
Oobleck: "She's not wrong...very well then, leave it here and we shall retrieve it upon our return."
Ruby: "But I, well...uh..."
Seeming to grow frustrated with Ruby's reluctance to leave the backpack, he outbursts slightly.
Oobleck: "Young lady, what could you possibly have in that bag that would be so important as to-"
The next several minutes were such a cluster fuck of random events, one of which being Ruby hiding Zwei in her backpack and Oobleck being completely stellar about it. All in all, Y/n deemed it to be way too much to follow, and decided to look closer at their surroundings.
It almost sent chills down his spine to look around the dead city of Mountain Glenn. Its almost exactly what he imagined it would be like. Larger buildings still mostly stood, but were broken and beaten, while the smaller stores and houses were more destroyed and overgrown with the passage of time. It gave him a very S.T.A.L.K.E.R feeling.
The city most certainly wasn't as dead as it seemed though. He could feel another presence. Whether it be the Grimm, or something else, he couldn't tell. He knew he didn't like it though.
His thoughts were forcefully interrupted however as he reflexively turned his head towards the sound of gunfire, noticing that the rest of his team was now engaging a small pack of Beowulves.
Seeing as he had no melee weapon for now, he began using his handcanon to lay heavy fire from a distance, successfully managing to kill a pack of six Beowulves that were drawn out of a nearby building with all the noise, practically blowing their heads off.
Considering there weren't many of the poor Grimm to begin with, the fight was over with fairly quickly, the team regrouping with their teacher as Ruby triumphantly rested Crescent Rose on her shoulder.
Ruby: "Hah! Piece of cake!"
Oobleck: "Don't celebrate yet. Im certain this will only be the first bout of many. Shall we continue?"
And continue they did.
All. God. Damn. Day.
Several hours later
Eight Beowulves wildly charge Y/n as he is separated from the team during a fight, closing distance rapidly, but not fast enough as quick and precise gunfire easily drops five of the large monsters. The closest of the remaining three leaps at the lone boy with a guttural roar, but instead catches the ground as in a shadowy mist, Y/n evades the monsters attack, proceeding to roundhouse kick the confused Grimm into one of its pack members, cruahing both of them with the force of the blow.
As the last Beowulf charges forward with murderous drive, Y/n holsters his handguns beating his arms once on his chest, challenging the beast. The Grimm lunges and swings a claw at the boy, but he catches the arm and quickly grabs the large arm, twisting it upside down and restricting the beast.
With an upward heave, the monsters arm snaps with a loud crunch. Its howl of pain is silenced however as Y/n headbutts the ferocious creature hard enough to send it to the floor. The still ravenous beast writhes on the floor, snapping its massive jaws at the boy, who stands above the creature, slowly and carefully reloading his revolver. Once finished, the creature of darkness is swiftly executed as Y/n smashes its head with a heavy stomp, watching the creature begin to disintegrate as he holsters his gun once more with an elegant spin.
Y/n: "Never know when to give up, do ya?"
Oobleck: "As a matter of fact, they do not."
Looking to his right, he is met by none other than the doctor, who appears to have been watching the entire ordeal.
"Is there a reason for the use of such brutality in your fighting style Mr. L/n?"
Finally turning away from the almost dissolved corpse of the Grimm, Y/n watches as his team finishes off the rest of the large pack with relative ease.
Y/n: "I have no mercy in my heart for monsters like these Doctor, or for anyone who would act so similar towards other people."
...
"You don't have to worry Doctor. I wouldn't show my fellow students, or any decent person this kind of treatment, I assure y-"
Oobleck: "Why do you wish to be a huntsman Y/n?"
Startled slightly by the interruption, Y/n looks to Oobleck with a questioning face, eliciting the professor to elaborate.
"It is obvious, at least to me, that you are here for reasons other than you having no other choice. I wish to know, if you would allow me. What drives you?"
The boys gaze softened as he looked around, once more taking in the sight of the broken city around them.
Y/n: "Although it wasn't on purpose, I proved to myself long ago that I have what it takes to save lives. To protect people. To make sure that nobody dies who doesn't have to. And now, im even more capable than I was before. There's many things you could call my reasons. Some would say its simply because I can. Some would say I do it as a form of redemption..."
The silence hung and Oobleck studied Y/n intensely from behind his glasses, his face portraying no clues as to his thoughts so far. But the doctor couldn't quite help the small gasp he took when Y/n faced him again, met with a look of absolute certainty and determination he had never seen on any of his students, in all his years as a professor.
"I'm here to do whats right, sir. I choose to be here, because there is nowhere else I'd rather be."
His grin portraying his satisfaction with the boys awnser, Oobleck merrily addresses the whole team as the girls catch up.
Oobleck: "Excellent work children! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any signs of criminal activity in this sector. Oh well. Moving on!"
Before he can begin to lead the team further into the city howeved, Yang speaks up from behind him, a notably dissatisfied look plastered on her face.
Yang: "Hey Doc, y'know I was kinda looking forward to seeing a pro huntsman in action...y'know like...actually fighting?"
Oobleck: "Ah, but I am in action! Scouring the ruins of this once great city for any signs of irregularity!"
Turning his full attention back to the team for a moment, he continues.
"Not every mission is filled with daring and heroism children. Sometimes its just a heightened form of extermination! Remember, this is a job, and you all signed up for it. I hope you understand that."
Almost reeling from the sheer length of his rebuttal, Yang stammers in her response.
Yang: "Well, yeah...O-of course!"
Letting out a small hum, Oobleck returns his attention to the path ahead as he continues to lead the team along. Seeing Yangs discontent with the conversation, Y/n pats her on the back before catching up with Oobleck.
Y/n: "At least its not tossing bags at an airport. Life's not all fire and flames."
Many hours later, late afternoon
Another sector patrolled, another pack of Grimm destroyed, and still, no leads on any criminal activity. Currently, team RWBY was waiting for their next set of instructions from their professor, each passing the time in their own subtle ways...save for Ruby, who had found an entire cooked turkey, and was hanging it off the blade of Crescent Rose in order to tease a jumping Zwei with it.
She quickly sheathed her weapon and stood up however as she noticed gaze of her professor on her.
Ruby: "Sorry! Uh...are we ready to keep going?"
Acting almost as if he wasn't watching her already, Ooblecks response is as energetic and elaborately to the point as ever.
Oobleck: "Nope! I believe that will have to do for today. Its going to be dark soon."
In a swift blur of motion, he tosses the large camper bag he has to Yang, who lets out and audible 'oof' as she catches the weight. Oobleck speaks once more.
"You three, set up camp. Your leader, Y/n and I are going to secure the perimiter. Come children."
Hearing his name, Y/n raised his head from the work of cleaning his guns. Standing up, he dismissed them for now and summoned his shotgun, deciding to finish cleaning them later.
He followed Ruby and the professor for roughly an hour as they scouted their camp's near perimiter, ensuring no Grimm would surprise them in the night. Seeing as it was already dusk when they started, it didn't take long for the sun to set, and the dark of night to grip Mountain Glenn.
Allowing the stars to light the way, they neared their last stop for the night as they came to look out over the edge of the ruined city, with a clear line of sight stretching all the way to the treeline of the neighboring woods. It was honestly quite beautiful, but something else grabbed Ruby's attention.
Ruby: "Whaaa...what is that?! It looks awesome!"
Y/n: "It is pretty cool looking."
Oobleck: "That, dear students, is a Grimm"
And sure enough, a massive herd of hulking, elephant like Grimm stalked the edge of the treeline, traveling in a line.
Ruby: "Lets kill it."
Before she could do anything however, a hand on her shoulder stopped her, Y/n being the culprit.
Y/n: "Bad idea Rosebud."
Oobleck: "Y/n is right. Im afraid your sniper rifle would do nothing but agitate a Grimm of that size."
Ruby: "But...what if it attacks us?"
Oobleck: "Fret not, Ruby, those Goliaths are not concerned with us. Ruby, not every Grimm is mindless, or rather not every Grimm is still mindless. You see, the Grimm you see before you are so powerful, so superior to the Grimm you fought, that they've undoubtedly lived hundreds of years, and in that time between killing humans and attacking our borders, they have done one important thing: They've learned. They've learned that when they attack our borders, they're likely to die, and what we lack in strength, we make up for in will, and that killing one human will only bring more."
Almost as if to prove his point, one of the lumbering monsters swivels its colossal head around to stare at the group, its fiery red eyes burning as bright as any other of the creatures of darkness.
Ruby: "Then why are they still so close to the city? What are they doing?"
Y/n: "Waiting."
Oobleck: "That is exactly right, Mr. L/n."
Finally tired of looking at the three, the Goliath swings its thick neck around once more, and continues to follow the herd.
Y/n: 'Smarter than the average bear, aren't you motherfucker.'
Oobleck: "Why don't you start walking back early Mr. L/n and check with the others. We shall ensure no harm comes to your bond along the way."
With a simple nod, and a quick ruffle of Ruby's hair, he set off in the direction of the nearby camp. He fully expected Oobleck to ask Ruby the same question he had been asking all of them. About why they chose this line of work.
Setting the thoughts in the back of his mind for now, he entered the building they had set camp in, surprising the entire team when his flickering form entered alone.
Blake: "Y/n? What are you doing here?"
Merely shrugging, he responded.
Y/n: "Doctors orders. He wanted me to check up on all of you. Good job."
In his absence, WBY had successfully managed to make a campfire out of several broken planks and ruined books, placing their sleeping bags around it. He sat down on his sleeping bag, laying his shotgun across his lap.
"You three holding up alright? I know Ooblecks been Interrogating you guys all day."
The three girls glanced at eachother, all with the same look of thought.
Yang: "I guess 'stuck' would be the best way to put it."
Absorbing what exactly that meant, Y/n spoke again as he summoned his handguns from earlier once more, deciding to resume cleaning while they talked.
Y/n: "Well, if you four have taught me anything, one thibg would be that talking about things can help get you 'unstuck'. So, im all ears, we've got a bit of time."
---------------------------------------‐--------------‐----------
(I realize this chapter is pretty short, but I owe you guys something at least. Next chapter I will work on making normal length. Plus I figured this was a decent spot to leave it. I realize that almost everyone who reads this is familiar with RWBY, but for the few who aren't, I like to try and make the wait for the next chapter a little exciting)
(Either way i hope you all enjoyed. Until Next Time.)
