chapter 9: Initiation
(Spent most of the last two days steeling myself for the initiation because theres a lot to cover here. It might stretch into two chapters for more character plot but I'm not solid on that right now. Hope you enjoy!)

Y/n Pov
...
...
...
???: "Y/n..."
...
...
???: "Yyyyyy/nnnnn...
...
???: "Y/N!!!!!"
Y/n: "AAAAH!!!" I yelled as I sprung up from my place on the floor in fright. I looked around me slowly and lethargicaly. There was someone very...red standing over me...but I couldnt make anything else out. I rubbed my eyes to clear the blurriness, but when I looked up I still couldnt see very clearly, although I could tell that whoever's this was was in their pajamas...and not very happy. I looked at my hands and noticed I could see them just fine. "Hmmm...maybe."
???: "Are you okay? You seem out of it..." I ignored the figure as I held my hands in front of me and gathered the shadows into the shape of...my glasses. "What's with those?" I once again ignored the figure as I placed my glasses on my face and looked up.
Y/n: "Aaah...much better. I guess these things will get their use after all. Good morning Ruby!" I said as I looked to the now recognizable Ruby Rose, standing in the middle of an empty ballroom in her pajamas. Well...empty except for the two of us. "Where is everyone?" Ruby crossed her arms and pouted at me.
Ruby: "Everybody else is already getting ready for initiation! Luckily they moved it back an hour for some reason so weve still got time...but I've spent that extra hour here! Trying to wake up you!" She scolded, still pouting and stomping her foot slightly at the end of her sentence. I tried to hold back my amusement of her little outburst...but I was failing. "What's so funny!" She questioned me, placing her hands on her hips. I let out a few short chuckles as I stood up from my spot on the floor and faced her.
Y/n: "hehehe...sorry rosebud...y'know your kinda cute when you pout like that." I said, ruffling her hair. Once I stopped she seemed pretty flustered, which was honestly adorable. She composed herself slightly though and spoke.
Ruby: "W-whatever! *sigh* Anyways what's up with you today? You seem awfully happy, and you normally wake up before I do. Also, glasses? Since when?" She questioned as she threw me a puzzled look. I gave her a simple and genuine smile as I responded.
Y/n: "Honestly? Last night has got to be the best sleep I've had since...well ever. I'm kind of an insomniac so getting a good nights sleep like that is super refreshing." I clarified as I stretched my body, getting a few satisfying pops in the process. "And didnt I tell you? I used to wear glasses when I was alive. We didnt know I needed then till I was 17 and a half...so like a month before I died. I dont know why I need them again all of a sudden but i think its temporary. Plus it feels...nice to wear them again." I finished stretching and looked back at her. She was giving off a warm smile, seemingly happy with the awnser.
Ruby: "*giggles* Well that's good that you slept well. We're gonna need our energy today. Now c'mon let's get going, Yang said she would be waiting by our lockers." And with that said, she set off towards the door of the empty ballroom. I watched her go for a bit before following. After walking through the halls of Beacon academy for a moment, we came to a large locker room filled with students preparing for the initiation. Ruby got her combat gear and changed while I waited around the corner of another set of lockers. I'm not a creep okay? Once Ruby was done she fetched me and we set off in search of Yang and our lockers where the girl's weapons were stored.
After a minute or two of walking through the hundreds of lockers, we see Yang standing in front of one, prepping and checking her Ember Celica. She looks over and sees us, beckoning us over with a wave of her hand, and a bright smile.
Yang: "Hey you two! Sleep well Y/n? I couldnt get you to even budge so I left ya with Ruby." Yang greeted us with enthusiasm. We finished our approach to the locker with me standing there with a smile on my face. So far today was great! And it was bound to be exciting as well. Ruby simply greeted with a 'hey sis' before opening her locker right next to Yangs and prepping herself for initiation.
Before I got a chance to greet Yang back, we had our attention drawn by a pair of students. One was an average sized male with black hair that had a magenta stripe in front. His clothing was fairly oriental, consisting of a green robe-like garb with intricate designs and open cuff sleeves. He seemed rather exasperated with the other student, but also like this was part of his daily routine. His eyes were a light pink, and he was prepping two bladed pistols.
The student next to him was a girl, slightly shorter than him with fiery orange hair and sharp green eyes. She wore pink gloves with white sleeves, and a strange looking combat dress with a heart shaped hole on her ehm...chest. She didnt seem to have a weapon on her and was incredibly energetic, practically jumping up and down as she spoke to the boy.
Girl: "I know! We'll have some sort of signal! Like a distress signal! *gasps* A secret signal so we can find each other in the forest! Can you imitate a sloth?" The boy finally responded to the girl, still not looking away from his weapons.
Boy: "Nora?" The girl, now known as Nora, responded.
Nora: "Yes Ren?" The boy, now known as Ren, almost imperceptible sheathed his weapons in his sleeves and turned to Nora.
Ren: "I dont think sloths make a lot of noise." He stated. Nora seemed to ponder this for a moment before looking right back at him with a bright and energetic smile.
Nora: "That's why it's perfect! No one will suspect we're working together!" She put forth. Ren shook his head with a smile as he closed his locker.
Ren: "Come on Nora, let's go." He then began walking towards the door right past us, Nora skipping happily along behind him.
Nora: "*giggles* Well not together together" Nora puts forth as they move past us and out of earshot. The three of us watch them leave as Ruby is the first to speak.
Ruby: "What's got them so worked up?" She said puzzled, grabbing Crescent Rose from her locker. Yang put forth a response.
Yang: "Oh who knows. So you two seem awfully chipper this morning! Also what's with the glasses?" She said, turning to face us both. I smiled as I responded. Jeez at this rate my face will freeze.
Y/n: "Yeah. I havent slept that well in a long time. And I'm not sure, I woke up this morning and my vision was a lot worse. I used to wear glasses so I conjured up these and here we are. I think its only temporary though." I put forth, as I finished talking, Ruby turned to Yang with a big smile.
Ruby: "Yep! Today's gonna be great! No more small talk or 'getting to know you' stuff. Today I get to leg my sweetheart do the talking!" She put forth with excitement, stroking Crescent Rose happily. Yang however wanted to play big sister it seemed.
Yang: "Well remember Ruby, you're not the only one going through initiation. If you wanna grow up your gonna have to meet new people and learn to work together." Yang said in an almost parental tone. Ruby sighed in frustration.
Ruby: "You sound just like dad!" She put Crescent Rose in her locker and slammed it closed before turning back to her sister. "Okay, first of all; what does meeting people have to do with fighting? And secondly; I dont need people to help me grow up! I drink milk!" Ruby put forth with a cross of her arms at the end of her statement. I chuckled a bit and gave my input.
Y/n: "If only it were that simple rosebud. If it was, I'd have been the strongest man alive." My comment t seemed to go right over their heads however, as Yang furthered the conversation.
Yang: "But what about when we form teams?" Yang questioned her sister.
Y/n: "Oh, ignored, cool. I'll be here still." I said as Ruby responded to her sister nervously.
Ruby: "Uhm, I dont know. I...I'll just be on your team or something..." Yang brings her hair over her shoulder and starts stroking it as she speaks, not making eye contact with Ruby.
Yang: "Maybe you should try being on someone else's team?" When Ruby hears this she crosses her arms and pouts a little at Yang as she accuses her sister.
Ruby: "My dear sister Yang, are you implying you do not wish to be on the same team as me?" Yang quickly tries to justify herself.
Yang: "What? No! Of course I do! I just thought... I dont know, maybe it would help you... break out of your shell!"
Ruby: "What the-?! I dont need to 'break out of my shell!' That's absolutely-!" She doesnt get to finish her sentence as Jaune unknowingly walks right between all of us, with his head buried in a map and looking very lost.
Jaune: "Ridiculous! Theres no way I put my stuff in locker 636 yesterday! I would have remembered having to count that high! Why does this have to happen today?" He continues to walk as he passes by a redheaded girl in spartan like armor who is talking to that Weiss girl from yesterday. Huh...surprised I even bothered to remember her name. I brushed the thought aside and turned to Ruby.
Y/n: "Hey I know that meeting new people and having to work with them isnt the best. I'm pretty antisocial to, and I get it, it's not fu. But whether we like it or not we are gonna have to." Ruby seemed even more upset about the idea and changed her head. I hate seeing her sad so I gave her a pat on the back as I tried to reassure her. "Hey...cheer up rosebud. Your not alone. No matter what you've always got me alright? I ain't goin anywhere, not that I even want to hehe..." Ruby seemed reassured by that as she raised her head up and put on a smile. She was obviously still nervous, I was too, but she was more comfortable now. And that's plenty good enough for me.
'Mission acomplished...' I thought. I looked over at Yang to see she was shifting her gaze between Ruby and I, a thoughtful look on her face. I raised an eyebrow at her.
"Everything ok Yang?" I asked. She shifted her gaze back to me and smirked.
Yang: "Yep! I'm just Yang-in around. No worries." She responded, getting a groan of annoyance out of Ruby while I let out a small chuckle. "Anyways we should probably-" Yang is cut off by an announcement coming over the loudspeaker, the voice of Glynda Goodwitch resounds throughout the area.
Glynda: "Would all first-year students please report to Beacon Cliff for initiation? Again, all first-year students report to Beacon Cliff immediately."
Y/n: "Well that's our cue." We turn towards the door and as we are walking out we see Jaune slumped against a locker with a spear punning his hoodie to it. The spartan girl from earlier pulled the spear from his hoodie, she also had a shield on her back, and spoke as she walked away.
???: "It was nice meeting you!" She spoke genuinely continuing down the walkway alongside Weiss. Jaune hung his head in shame as we decided to make our approach. I saw a brother in need and walked ahead of the girls, offering Jaune a hand up. I was gonna mess with him a bit though...
Y/n: "How ya holdin up vomit boy?" I said to him. He looked up at me with an initial frown, but shook his head as he allowed a smile onto his face and accepted my hand up.
Jaune: "Yeah yeah very funny. I dont get it man, my dad said that all girls look for is confidence..." he said as I helped him up to his feet. I gave him a pat on the back as we began our walk.
Y/n: "I wasnt really a ladies man...but I dont think your dad really knows what hes talkin about." I said as I supported Jaune and we walked out of the locker room.
We made our way to the cliffs to find a long row of silver tiles on the edge of the cliff. Off to the left stood Professors Ozpin and Glynda Goodwitch. As the mass of first years approached the former spoke.
Ozpin: "If you would all like to take your positions upon the tiles than we may begin. We are already behind schedule." The proffesor spoke, although he himself didnt seem to be in a rush. We all took our places on a platform. Many of the first years were confused when I stepped onto the same tile as Ruby, but soon turned their attention to Ozpin as he spoke again.
Ozpin: "For years, you have trained to become warriors, and today, your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest." He paused for Glynda to speak.
Glynda: "Now, I'm sure many of you have heard rumors about the assignment of "teams." Well, allow us to put an end to your confusion. Each of you will be given teammates... today." She informed us. I expected as much, but Ruby seemed worried.
Ruby: "What? Ohhhh..." She didnt have long to think on it however as Izpin picked up right where Glynda left off.
Ozpin: "These teammates will be with you for the rest of your time here at Beacon. So it is in your best interest to be paired with someone with whom you can work well." Ruby letcout a groan at this but Ozpin continued. "That being said, the first person you make eye contact with after landing will be your partner for the next four years."
Ruby: "WHAAAAAT??!!?!?!" Ruby yelled with immense shock and anxiety. I swear I could hear her world shatter like glass. I couldnt blame her though as I also hated the idea. Dick move Oz... I heard that Nora girl say something to Ren before the wizard spoke again.
Ozpim: "After you've partnered up, make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will meet opposition along the way. Do not hesitate to destroy everything in your path... or you will die." Jaune let's out an awkward laugh and gulps loudly. "You will be monitored and graded through the duration of your initiation, but our instructors will not intervene. You will find an abandoned temple at the end of the path containing several relics. Each pair must choose one and return to the top of the cliff. We will regard that item, as well as your standing, and grade you appropriately. Are there any questions?" He finishes his instructions. Jaune raised a nervous hand and tried to ask a question.
Jaune: "Yeah uhm sir...?" Ozpin disregards the poor boy though.
Ozpin: "good! Now, take your positions." All the students prepare themselves for the launch. Ruby readies herself and I spread my legs ready to be launched. Jaune doesnt seem to get the idea but I pay him no mind as I watch students be flung off the cliff at high speeds over the forest. Yang puts on a pair of aviators out of nowhere and gives us a two fingered salute as she is launched over the forest with a 'woohoo!' The student next to us is launched and we prepare ourselves as the tile beneath us let's out a clock and then springboards us over the forest.
I wasn't worried about Ruby during the fall because I knew she was perfectly capable of landing on her own. So I focused of staying next to her so that we didnt get out of our range and crash into the ground in pain. Ruby unfortunately hit a bird head-on as we started to descend.
Ruby: "BIRDIE NO!" She yelled out as we continued to soar through the air. Once she cleared the feathers out of her face she pulled out her weapon in its rifle form and used the weapons ridiculous recoil to slow her descent, while I stayed right next to her the whole time. Eventually she swapped the weapon into its scythe form as she snagged the blade onto a branch and swung off of it. She landed on her feet with me right next to her and we bothe immediately took off running.
Ruby: "Aaaah! I cant believe he would do that! The first person we make eye contact with?!? I dont even know any of these people!" Ruby yelled out in frustration and anxiety as we continued to run through the forest.
Y/n: "Hey it's okay! Weve just gotta focus on finding someone we do know! So think, who's everyone here we know?" I yelled back. Ruby started to list off names.
Ruby: "Okay... Who else do I know in this school? There's Yang, Jaune, Blake, aaaand..." Time seems to come to a slow as we both slide to a stop and look directly at the person we almost ran in to...to reveal the ice queen herself, Weiss Schnee. She makes eye contact with Ruby, then with me and seems to stand there in though for a moment. The silence is practically suffocating...until Weiss suddenly turns on her heels and walks away. Ruby follows slightly as she speaks.
Ruby: "Wait! Where are you going?!" She stops following and kicks the ground dejectedly. "Were supposed to be partners..."
Y/n: "Of course it had to be the Ice Queen..." I let out. Ruby seemed to share in my lack of enthusiasm. A few moment passed in silence before Weiss suddenly reemerged from the trees and started to drag Ruby by her hood.
Weiss: "By no means does this make us friends." She says coldly. Ruby however throws up her hands in joy as she is dragged along.
Ruby: "You came back!"
I smiled at Ruby's returned enthusiasm and started to follow along as Ruby freed herself from Weiss's grip and walked alongside her.
'Maybe this can work out...'
