Chapter 8: Beacon Academy pt 2

(Alright! Let's see if I can stretch this into two even parts...thatd be pretty sweet! Oh! And before I forget, thanks for 300 reads! I have no idea how enough people have even found this for that to work but hey here we are! Anyways we should really...where are we supposed to go again?)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Y/n's Pov

The sun was starting to get low over Beacon academy, the way the sun was lighting up the sky was especially beautiful this evening and the scenery only served to enhance its beauty. Ruby, Jaune and I were walking around Beacon academy, most notably along one of the on campus RIVERS. SERIOUSLY WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL IS THIS?!? Anyways I forced my attention away from the sun bearing the horizon and focused on the conversation that was happening.

Jaune: "Look all I'm saying is motion sickness is a much more common problem than people think!" Jaune stated with a hint of annoyance.

Ruby: "Look I'm sorry! Vomit-boy was just the first thing that came to mind!" Ruby responded. I couldnt help but snicker at the name Jaune had made for himself, but he had a comeback that Ruby wasnt ready for.

Jaune: "Oh yeah? Well what if I called you Crater-face!" Jaune fired back. I nearly bursted out laughing, also holding back tears of pure entertainment. Ruby pouted and punched me in the arm as she retorted.

Ruby: "Hey! That explosion was an accident!" I managed to collect myself and wiped away a single tear on my face as Jaune reintroduced himself.

Jaune: "Well the names Jaune Arc! Short, sweet, rolls of the tounge. Ladies love it!" Jaune proudly stated, putting his hands on his hips in a proud way.

I snickered again but Ruby and I looked at eachother before turning back to Jaune and asked the same question.

Ruby&Y/n: "Do they?" Jaune didnt seem prepared for that as he lost his confident expression.

Jaune: "T-they will! I hope they will...my mom always says that-*sighs* nevermind..." He puts his head down in embarrassment as his arms fall to the side. Poor Jaune, he's a good guy I can tell but he doesn't quite know when he's dug himself a hole. A somewhat awkward silence had fallen and in an attempt to make conversation, Ruby decided to show off her weapon.

Ruby: "Sooooo...I got this thing!" She says as she quickly unfolds her Crescent Rose and stabs the blade into the ground, seriously shocking Jaune in the process.

Jaune: "Is that a scythe?!?" He exclaimed, thrown off by its size.

Ruby: "Its also a customizable, high-impact sniper rifle!" Ruby blurted out. Jaune was somehow confused.

Jaune: "Uuuhh..." Ruby cocked Crescent Rose as I clarified for him.

Y/n: "Its also a gun Jaune." He let put an 'Oh' as Ruby asked the question of the hour.

Ruby: "What about you?" She asked, excited to see a new weapon.

Jaune: "Oh well, I got this sword..." He unsheathed the sword on his hip as Ruby let out an interested 'oooooo' before he continued. "I got this shield too." He grabbed the swords sheath and pressed a button as it expanded into a shield. Ruby spoke out in curiosity.

Ruby: "So...What do they do?" She asks as she pokes the shield. The shield shrinks, expands, shrinks and expands again as Jaune fumbles with it until he get it under control, shrinking it down for good and placing it on his belt.

Jaune: "The shield gets smaller, so when I get tire of carrying it, I can just...put it away."

Ruby: "But...wouldn't it still with the same?" Jaune looks down dejectedly as he responds.

Jaune: "*sigh* yeah...it does." Ruby let's out a giggle as she continues.

Ruby: "Well, I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons, sooo... I guess I did go a little overboard when designing it" she says matter of factly. Jaune looks shocked again.

Jaune: "Wait you made that thing?!?"

Ruby: "Of course! All students at Signal forged their own weapons. Didnt you make yours?" Jaune looks somewhat disappointed with himself as he responds.

Jaune: "Its a hand-me-down. My great-grandfather used it to fight in the war."

Ruby: "Sounds more like a family heirloom to me!" She let's put a small laugh as she continues. "Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days" she finishes with a cheery smile.

Y/n: "I agree with Ruby. Theres nothing wrong with simple, sometimes simple is the most effective strategy. Besides you seem like a fairly smart guy, I think your a bit more of a strategist. It suits you." I put forth, finally deciding to contribute and maybe cheer him up a little.

Jaune: "Yeah...yeah I guess your right." Jaune says as he sheathes his sword and looks a bit happier now. "By the way what's up with you if you dont mind me asking. Your a little...unorthodox looking to say the least." I give Ruby a glance as if to ask what I should tell him, but she just shrugs. Jaune seems like a nice guy so i see no reason to lie to him.

Y/n: "Well that's a long story but I'm technically dead. I just made myself tangible before you showed up at the courtyard. That's why you probably didnt see me on the ship, whenever I'm intangible she is the only one who can see or hear me. Long story short about a month ago I woke up in her room pretty much as a shadow and found out we got tethered to eachother somehow. Been pretty neat so far."

Jaune: "Huh...I feel like I should be way more shocked about that but it would explain a few things. Well I hope that keeps working out for you two."

Ruby: "I've gotta ask though what made you want to help back there?" Ruby asked, slightly curious of Jaunes motive as we resumed out walk.

Jaune: "Eh, I figured why not. My mom always said that strangers are just friends you havent met yet." Jaune put forth, walking alongside us.

Y/n: "Well thank you, and she sounds like a smart woman...hey are we supposed to go somewhere?" Both Ruby and Jaune stopped after I spoke seeming to also have no idea where we were meant to be.

Jaune: "Oh! I dont know. I was following you two. Y-You think there might be a directory? Maybe a food court? Some kind of recognizable landmark?" Jaune noticea our silence and looks at us to see us both giving him a raised eyebrow. "Is, uh... Is that a 'no'?" Ruby gives out a small laugh as she responds.

Ruby: "That's a 'no' "

Y/n: "Here gimme a second" I flew up high enough to get a birds eye view of the area we were in and I just barely caught sight of a few students heading towards a large building. I floated back down and reported my findings. "Theres a few students headed to a large building over there, why dont we see if that's the place?"

Ruby: "Sounds good!" And with that we set off.

Turns out we came to the right spot because we stepped inside of the building to find a large auditorium jam packed with students. We didnt look around for long before we heard a familiar voice call out.

Yang: "Ruby! Y/n! Over here I saved you a spot!" We looked over to notice Yang waving at us, Ruby turned to Jaune.

Ruby: "Oh! That's my sister! Weve gotta go Jaune, see ya later!" Jaune looked a little thrown off.

Jaune: "U-uh wai-"

Y/n: "See ya later Jaune." And with that we took our leave, leaving behind a very dejected looking Jaune. I felt a little bad...but only a little. Eventually we made our way over to Yang and she greeted us.

Yang: "hey little sister! How's your first day at Beacon going? Also, Y/n I didnt expect to see you walking around, did something happen?"

Ruby: "You mean since you ditched me and I exploded!" Ruby shouted at her sister, clearly not happy with being abandoned by her sister.

Yang: "Yikes meltdown already?" Yang asked, turning to me for confirmation.

Y/n: "Unfortunately no. She quite literally exploded. I wouldn't say it was her fault though." Yang seemed in disbelief before smirking at me.

Yang: "Your being sarcastic right?" I gave her a deadpan look as Ruby scoffed and went off about the incident.

Ruby "I wish! I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!" I felt bad for Ruby and was about to speak up...when suddenly Weiss was right behind her and called her out.

Weiss: "YOU!" Ruby was frightened by Weiss's sudden appearance and jumped up in shock. She almost fell on the floor but I caught her. When she noticed it was Weiss who had shouted at her she retreated further into the hold.

Ruby: "Oh god it's happening again!" I was caught off that she didnt try and stand up but I brushed it off and refocused my attention on Weiss. She had only been here for a few seconds and I was already getting angry.

Weiss: "You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!" she shouted, stomping in place slightly.

Yang: "Oh my god you actually exploded..." she let out in a low voice filled with disbelief.

Ruby: "It was an accident! It was an accident!" Ruby was almost cut off as Weiss suddenlyhwld a pamphlet in front of her face that was titled 'Dust for Dummies' "What's this?" Ruby asked in confusion.

Weiss: "The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and famili-" she continued with her rant but I tuned it out. I was more than angry at this point.

I was absolutely livid.

Y/n: "Ok listen here Ice Queen!" I said as I finally set Ruby back on her feet. "Heiress to some snobby company or not you have a serious talent for PISSING ME OFF! I have no patience for people like you, So I seriously advise you check your fucking tone before I check it for you." All three of the girls seemed shocked at my sudden change in tone.

Ruby's Pov

I was a little embarrassed at first when Y/n put me down since I had forgotten that I'd practically jumped into his arms. Most of that embarrassment was replaced with shock at what he had said next though, and it seems like Yang and Weiss were just as shocked as I was. This was the second time he'd yelled at someone today and he wasnt really one to get angry easily, normally he was pretty calm. What shocked me the most though was his eyes. His silver irises were burning with a bright intensity that rivalled Yangs hair when she used her semblance, I swear I almost saw smoke coming off of them, and his hands were curled into fists, almost trembling. I stood there a moment or two in shock before it was replaced with concern. I didnt want anyone getting hurt here and it looked like Y/n might seriously hurt Weiss. The situation needed to be dealt with so I did the first thing that came to mind.

Y/n's Pov

I was seriously angry. I'd hoped that I'd never have to deal with someone like this again but that was just me being a hopeful fool. I was barely containing myself, I was worried for a moment that I'd lose my grip and actually hurt this girl...

I was snapped out of my hate however when I felt someone grab my left hand. I looked down to see Ruby holding my hand in both of hers, looking up at me with concern. Once she was sure she had my attention she spoke.

Ruby: "Please calm down, I dont think this is what you really want." I looked around and noticed that luckily no one seemed to have taken notice of my outburst. I felt myself calming down as I took a few deep breaths and then looked back down at Ruby with a warm smile as I returned the hand holding.

Y/n: "Thanks rosebud, sorry about that." She returned the smile with a tint of red on her cheeks. We stayed there like that for a moment before Yang loudly cleared her throat to refocus us. I turned back to Weiss, much more calm than before. "Right, listen I'm sorry for that but can we please tone it down with the high and mighty crap and be a bit more kind about this?" I asked of her. Yang threw in her 10 cents while the opportunity was there.

Yang: "It seems to me like you three got off on the wrong foot, why dont we start over." Yang suggested. Ruby agreed with her sister and let go of my hand as she began.

Ruby: "Great idea sis! Ahem! Hello Weiss, my name is Ruby Rose and this here is Y/n L/n. Wanna be friends? We can go shopping for school supplies together!" Ruby restarted, attempting to make a friend out of Weiss. The girl in white gave minimal effort as she replied.

Weiss: *sarcastically* Oh yeah, and we can go try on clothes and talk about cute boys like tall, blonde and...scraggly over there." She replied with a level of sarcasm that was honestly rude. She also pointed a thumb over her shoulder at Jaune who seemed to be somewhat aware he was being talked about as he looked over at us. Ruby unfortunately didnt pick up on the sarcasm.

Ruby: "Really?!?" She said with hope and enthusiasm. Weiss gave a deadpan expression as she responded plainly.

Weiss: "No." Ruby looked down clearly depressed by the response

Y/n: "Your makin' this really hard you know that?" I said with as little venom as I could. I was more focused on Ruby however as i brought her into a one-arm high to try and make her feel better. Soon however, everyone was focused on the stage, as professor Ozpin had made his way to a microphone, with Glynda Goodwitch beside him, and cleared his throat to get everyone's attention. Once he had it, he spoke.

Ozpin: "I'll... keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction." Students began to whisper to eachother as he paused for a moment, but quieted down when he started to talk again. "You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step." And with that said, he walks off the stage, with Glynda taking his place at the microphone.

Glynda: "You will gather in the ballroom tonight. Tommorow, your initiation begins. Be ready." And with that said she walked off the same way Ozpin did. Yang was the first to comment on the speech.

Yang: "He seemed kina... off." Ruby nodded in agreement.

Ruby: "Its almost like he wasnt even there."

Y/n: "His expression seemed troubled. He had something on his mind." Ruby and Yang nodded in agreement and there was a half second of silence...before Jayne appeared on Weiss's side and spoke while thumbing to himself.

Jaune: "I'm a natural blonde you know!" Weiss facepalmed in exasperation while Ruby and I chuckled at his poor timing.

*Timeskip*

Ruby's Pov

All of the students were gathered in the ballroom sprawled out across the floor on sleeping bags. I wasnt paying much attention to them though as I was in my pajamas lying down on my sleeping bag while I wrote a letter to my friends back at Signal. I bounced slightly in place as Yang plopped onto the sleeping bag to my right and spoke.

Yang: "Its like a big slumber party!" She said. I looked around the ballroom a bit without moving my head from my letter before I looked back at it and responded.

Ruby: "I dont think dad would approve of all the boys though." Yang gave a smirk as she gave her piece.

Yang: "I know I do..." she was looking around the ballroom purring slightly until she saw something she didnt like "ugh" after which she refocused back on me. "What ya got there?"

Ruby: "Its a letter to the gang back at Signal. I promised them I'd write to them about what Beacon is like when I got here" Yang decided to tease as usual but was doing it a little loud.

Yang: "Aaaww! That's so CUU-" she was cut off as I threw a pillow at her, hitting her in the face. She fell onto her back with the pillow on her face as I scolded her.

Ruby: "Shut up! Your gonna wake up Y/n!" I looked to my left to see, to my relief, that Y/n was still sound asleep. He crashed a little earlier saying that he was more tired than normal. I think his outburst earlier took a bit out of him. I looked back to Yang who had recovered and noticed the sleeping boy as I continued. "Besides i didnt exactly get to take my friends with me to Beacon. It's weird not knowing anyone here." To my surprise Yang was silent. I looked over and saw she was looking at Y/n with a thoughtful expression. "Yang?"

Yang: "What do you think of him?" I was thrown off by her sudden inquiry. "Y/n. What do you think of him? You've known him longer than I have but from what I've seen he's a pretty good guy." After she spoke I turned my head back to Y/n in thought. He was facing us in his sleep with his messy hair hanging over his eyes slightly. He almost seemed more colorful for a moment, but i shook it off.

I took a few moment to gather my thoughts. His whole situation was strange to say the least. Dying, expecting oblivion and then waking up in some girls room on another world, as some sort of intangible shadow spirit no less. Any normal person probably would've had their perspective shattered by something like that, maybe even have gone insane, but he was fine. He accepted his situation, not even reluctantly, but happily. He had told me a lot about his life before he died, almost everything, the one thing he never talked about was his death, and whenever it was brought up he seemed...regretful. He never even seemed sad about having died, which worried me. I know he wasnt happy before he died, far from it, but he seemed so happy for his life to have ended so early. But then again...I also know what it feels like to lose your light. The difference between us was that I had dad and Yang who I felt understood and I could go to, and that helped me be my own light. But he had nobody. He was a stranger in his own home, and didnt really have anyone to go to. So he bared the weight of the world alone.

I look at him now and I cant help but wonder how he lasted as long as he did. He told me before that he spent his life waiting to die but he wouldn't kill himself. He refused to put the ones he loved through the pain he felt, and so he hid himself in the dark and waited. Even when he was so broken he found more strength than most and pressed on. It irks me that someone so kind and caring was allowed to be reduced to that state. My thoughts wander back to the night of the day I met him, when he was staring at the broken moon. He told me that he finally felt like he was home, that I gave him one. And when he woke up after passing out, he was terrified. He told me that night about his dream, he thought I left him, that he had lost everything again. I dont want him to feel that again, I want to make him feel at home, like he belongs. I hope I can keep doing that. I stared a moment longer before I responded to Yang, still not looking away from him.

Ruby: "I've only known him for a month, but I feel like I've known him my whole life. He had such a hard time before he ended up here. He never really had a place to call home, no one he could really count on or have understand his problem. He lost his light, and he lost his will to live." I brushed a messy piece of hair out of his eyes while I paused, his breathing hitched slightly before he relaxed, still sound asleep. He looked so peaceful now, this isnt what he hoped to find after his life, but I think this is much better than simply fading away. "He has been so kind, thoughtful and caring, it's not fair that he had the chance of a good life taken away from him like that. I want to be there for him, I want to be his new light and I want him to never feel all alone again. I want him to experience those parts of life that he never got to." I finally looked back at Yang as I finished my statement, only to be completely surprised by the presence of Weiss and that other girl with the bow from the courtyard. I felt my cheeks light up a bit in embarrassment. I thought it was just Yang listening!

"O-oh! Uhm hi. I dont think I ever caught you name. I'm Ruby." I said to the girl with the bow.

Blake: "Blake" was all she responded with as she had a rather somber expression. I also noticed that even Weiss was looking a little sympathetic to my surprise.

Ruby: "How long have they been here?" I asked my sister. Before now she had a look on her face much like Weiss and Blake, but she also looked like she was confirming a suspicion she had In her own head.

Yang: "Not that long. We should probably get some sleep. Big day tommorow" and with that she laid down on her back to try and get some sleep. The other two walked away as well, presumably to do the same.

I looked back at Y/n to see that I had left my hand at its spot near his face, and in his sleep he had come to rest his hand on top of it. I found myself smiling as I layed down on my sleeping bag and closed my eyes.

I'm going to help him.

I'm going to make this second chance of his worth it.

"I promise"
