Chapter 14: Musical Morning

(Time for round two! The story resumes! With the return of my chosen opening song for vol.1 of this story, we march on!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd Person Pov

The rest of the day following Y/n's breakdown had been nothing short of a massive breath of fresh air for the boy. During breakfast and lunch he had a chance to properly introduce himself to Jaunes teammates, with whom he hit it off pretty well. It was at this point they also discovered that the two teams shared some classes together, so using the day they were given they walked around the campus grounds together to find their classes.

No mistake is to be made. Y/n was doing incredibly for the rest of the day. But even with that said he still looked a little worse for wear. He had bags under his eyes and his hair was a bit messy...well more than usual, he wasnt very worried about keeping it super tidy. It was also clear he had been crying earlier this morning but he walked around with a content smile nonetheless. Jaune was understandably concerned and took an opportunity while the teams were walking in the halls to pull Y/n aside for a moment, hanging a bit back.

Jaune: "Hey man, are you okay? Not to be rude but you look like...I dont even know. Were you crying?"

Y/n let his gaze shift from Jaune over to Ruby, who was walking ahead and chatting with Pyrrha, they seemed to be getting along well. His smile grew wider, not unnoticed by Jaune, who looked back and forth between the two, trying to figure things out. Y/n spoke before he could though.

Y/n: "Jaune, my good friend...I dont think I've ever been better."

And with that he sped up his pace to rejoin the rest of the group, leaving a puzzled Jaune behind. Eventually though after witnessing Y/n chatting and laughing with everyone, he decided to take the strange boys word for it, and rejoined the group as well.

Currently, Y/n was sitting cross-legged, hovering in the air near Ruby's bed, lost in his own thoughts. It was early in the morning, the sun hadn't even come out yet. Y/n had simply woken up in the middle of the night for quite literally no reason and couldnt fall asleep again. So whilst his teammates were sleeping peacefully, he was awake and waiting for the girls to wake up. Without warning, he shifted into intangibility so that only Ruby could perceive him in any way. There was still a chance of waling her up buuuut....eh what's a little risk every now and then?

He held his hands above his lap, and after focusing for a moment created a square, flat, pad with buttons and dials all over it.

He set the device to its lowest volume and tapped a couple buttons to make some noise before glancing back at Ruby. Seeing she was still sound asleep, he turned his attention back to the pad.

'What to play' he thought. He sat in silent thought for a moment before a smirk came onto his face. He flicked a few switches, turned a dial and set to work. He sang as well...quietly of course.

And just like that he was in his own world. He always knew he had a talent for music but he never had a reason to play until now. Now that he was in a new world, his mind was a reservoir of artifacts, the good pieces of his past that he could carry with him. He decided he would play them from now on, keep them alive, and bring them new places. And a life as a huntsman would give him that opportunity.

As he was lost in his music he never noticed that he was slowly beginning to sing louder, causing Ruby to stir, she peeked through nearly shut eyes to see Y/n hovering in front of her and playing. She decided to pretend she was still asleep, and listen for a while. She loved to hear him sing, it was obvious that music meant a lot to him. He was so engrossed in the song that he didnt notice he was singing pretty loudly. She sat up to watch him as the song began to come to a close.

As soon as he hit the last note he switched off the pad and the room was filled with silence once more. Then it hit him like a train just how loud he was being. He silently thanks himself for his intangibility, then turned he head to look at Ruby. Said silver-eyed teen was sitting up on her bed cross-legged, resting her chin in her hands with a look that said shed heard a good bit if the song.

Y/n: "That's a yikes" the boy said in a nervous tone. He knew the potential of having an audience, but he still wasnt prepared for it. Ruby giggled at his nervousness.

Ruby: "I dont know why you get so nervous. You have an awesome singing voice." Her tone was genuine, but the boy merely rubbed his nape shyly.

Y/n: "I dont like having all the attention on me. I just really liked music. Now that I'm here it only exists in my head, so I'm trying my best to keep it alive." Ruby nodded at his response, she wouldn't sing in front of crowds either so she couldnt really question it.

She checked the time and noticed they had plenty of time before the others needed to wake up. Why not kill some time?

Ruby: "Well it's still pretty early, why dont you do one more? I'm not gonna get back to sleep." Y/n let out an exasperated sigh.

Y/n: "Do I have to...?" Ruby put her hand on her chin in mock thought before she smirked at him and replied.

Ruby: "Yep! Or I'll make you do it in front of the team!" Y/n gave her a deadpan look.

Y/n: "You're evil..." but his deadpan suddenly turned to his own devilish smirk as he got an idea. "...actually, sure I'll do another one...on one condition."

This worried Ruby slightly, what did he have in store?

"You have to sing it with me!" Now that she wasnt a fan of.

Ruby: "No way! Besides I've got a terrible singing voice..." Now it was her turn to be nervous.

Y/n: "Oh that's a load of bullshit and you know it." This threw her off her stride for sure. "I've heard you singing a few times when your not paying attention. You've got a great voice! Besides if I can apparently sing well, theres no say that you cant."

Ruby was a little embarrassed now. She liked music too, and sometimes had a habit of sporting out lyrics to her favorite songs. Sometimes it can be easy to forget Y/n is there.

Ruby: "W-well even if I did song with you, how would I? I dont know any of your songs." She pretty much gave up now. He wasnt going to give up so she might as well go with it, besides it could be fun.

Y/n didnt spare a second thought as he summoned a shadow piece of paper with silver writing on it. He handed the sheet to her revealing it to be lyrics, for male and female, to a song named 'Hero' by some band called 'Skillet'.

Y/n: "They were a pretty popular rock band on earth, I really liked their music. This ones a bit of a duet, so take a minute and look at your lines. I've got those in my heart already."

Y/n floated on over and plopped on the bed across from Ruby. He shifted back into tangibility as well, I mean, this was his first time singing with someone else, so why not go the whole nine yards?

Ruby figured she'd give it a shot. What's the worst that could happen? She scanned the lyrics to the song while Y/n fiddled with his pad. She thought the choice of song was a little...strange. The lyrics seemed to suggest something that she hoped didnt relate to the now. Y/n seemed to take notice of her concerned look.

Y/n: "Theres nothing to worry about rosebud. I just chose this song because I really like it. I think you will too."

There was no doubt or hesitation in his voice, and she trusted him. She committed her lines to memory before she set the sheet down on the bed in the space between them, just in case she needed fo take a peek at it.

Y/n: "You ready?"

Ruby: "Ready as I'll ever be."

Y/n: "You'll do fine rosebud. Besides if you like rock and roll as much as you say, you'll pick this one up easy."

With a newfound confidence, Ruby gave him a determined look and nodded. Y/primed his pad, and began to count down from three on his fingers. As soon as the countdown finished the started the son, and they began.

Turns out Y/n was right, as Ruby picked up on the song right away. Something about the song seemed to resonate with her. She never missed a beat, and never even needed to look back at the sheet. The two poured their hearts into the music, a symphony of song, working in perfect tandem to bring the music to life. In hindsight it was a miracle that only a certain firecracker slowly stirred awake, since they were going at full volume, pouring all they had into the song.

Neither took notice of their blonde teammate now sitting up and watching them. And said teammate, taking notice halfway through the song, saw an opportunity to tease her little sister, and leaped at it. She slowly shook Blake awake, who was in the bed next to her and after shushing the sleepy bookworm, directed her attention back to the two unaware performers.

When the song eventually came to a close, the both were a little out of breath, but neither cared, that was so much fun! And not to mention it felt amazing to get that deep into the music. Ruby had never heard a song just quite like it. Sure remnant had plenty of music, but this was unique to her at least, it had that otherworldly feeling to it.

Y/n: "This song used to be a motivator for me. It helped me keep going, thinking just maybe I'd find that hero."

He suddenly plopped himself right next to Ruby, and brought her in for a quick one armed hug, both still unaware of their teammates, one of whom had started recording with her scroll.

"And what do you know, I found her after all."

Ruby felt her face heat up, but didnt bother with it. She simply chose to enjoy the moment. Returning the small embrace.

Ruby: "Your a dork, you know that right?"

Y/n: "Why do you think we get along so well?" He shot back with a chuckle, eliciting a playful hit on the arm from Ruby.

*click-SNAP*

The sudden sound of the camera practically reverberated around the room, drawing the duo's attention to the opposite end of the room, where Blake and Yang both sat watching the two. The former seemed pleasantly surprised by the singing, and seemed to enjoy it. However clearly not as much as Yang was loving the amount of material she was getting to tease and torture poor Ruby with.

The young rose was flooded with embarrassment and absolute dread over what her older sister had in store, she had a look on her face that suggested she knew something. Y/n was similarly embarrassed like when Ruby caught him singing, and responded similarly.

Y/n: "Double-Yikes"

Yang: "I'm just gonna hold on to this. Hope you dont mind." She teased, making it very obvious they didnt have a choice in the matter. Y/n sighed.

Y/n: "Yare yare daze..." The boy checked the time, and then noticed that their last teammate hadn't woken up yet.

A devilish smile crept across his face as he got an idea. He leaned down and whispered the idea in Rubys' ear, who let out a devilish little giggle at the thought and nodded in agreement, leaving the other two confused. Ruby stood up to put the plan in motion.

Ruby: "Come on girls! Let's go get ready. Weve got something in store for our last teammate."

And with that she grabbed her uniform and headed into the bathroom. Yang merely shrugged and went with it, and Blake just followed suit as she didnt really care.

While the girls were getting ready, Y/n was preparing to make some noise. Much to Rubys' dread however, Yang began to do Yang things.

Yang: "Soooo, since when is my little sister such a performer?" She began to interrogate her sister as she brushed her hair. Blake figured shed throw in her two cents.

Blake: "I have to admit it sounded good. Not exactly my type of music but good nonetheless." The younger girls embarrassment showed as she stuttered slightly in her response

Ruby: "I-it was nothing."

Yang: "What do you mean? You two sounded great! I didnt even know you could sing before this morning."

Ruby: "Well its not like I'm trying to perform or anything! I woke up cause he was already playing a song and didnt notice how loud he was being. I tried to get him to sing another, but he would only do it if I sang one with him."

Yang grinned at the potential to tease her little sister.

Yang: "Oooh so you like to hear him sing?" Ruby blushed and punched her sister in the arm, but responded nonetheless.

Ruby: "S-shut up! He's a good singer! Besides, those songs are from his world. Their kind of like a keepsake for him. I think holding onto them will be good for him."

Yang: "Well I guess your right there. I still think you just wanted to keep hearing him sing though. Besides you looked like you were enjoying yourself. He even dedicated the song to you at the end there." Ruby blushed again but responded.

Ruby: "Well yesterday wasnt the first time he had a breakdown. It was definetely the worst though. It was nice of him though."

Blake: "What other kinds of songs do you think he knows."

Ruby: "I imagine all sorts. On the bullhead into Beacon he told me he used to have playlists of music that would go on for hours. I think he said his longest one was 32 hours or something crazy like that."

By now they had all finished getting ready for the day, and regaining her composure, Ruby led her team out.

"Well come on! Let's not keep him waiting too long!"

When the girls stepped out of the bathroom, they were greeted by the sight of what happens when Y/n goes a little overboard. He still had the pad from earlier, but it was now connected to a large amplifier that was resting conveniently near Weiss' bed. He noticed them and quickly put a finger over his lips to quiet them since Weiss was starting to wake up on her own.

Weiss didnt even get the chance to open her eyes all the way before Y/n pressed a button on the pad, and an incredibly loud riff from a bass guitar sounded, causing Weiss to fall off her bed and flat on her face. Ruby wasted no time springing into action.

Ruby: "GOOOD MORNING TEAM RWBY!!!" She loudly proclaimed, practically shouting in Weiss' face.

Weiss: "What is wrong with you?!" Y/n came right back at her.

Y/n: "Consider this payback for being so crabby when we first met you." He said with a smug look. Weiss was about to retort, but didnt get a chance.

Ruby: "Now that your awake we can begin our first order of buisiness!"

Weiss: "What are you-"

Y/n: "Decorating!" The boy proclaimed, cutting off Weiss. He opened up the dorm closet, out from which spilled the entirety of the teams luggage, scattering across the floor.

Yang: "We still have to unpack!" She said as she grabbed a case off the floor.

Blake picked one up as well, but it came undone and spilled its contents of mostly books and some clothes onto the floor.

Blake: "And clean..." she added a bit quieter.

Weiss does not look enthusiastic in the slightest, so Y/n plays a super loud riff again making her jump.

Weiss: "IM ALREADY AWAKE!!" She shouted in frustration.

Y/n: "I know. That was just for fun." She glared daggers at the boy but Ruby spoke again.

Ruby: "Aaaalright! Yang, Blake, Y/n, Weiss and their fearless leader Ruby, have begun their first mission!" She put her first triumphantly into the air to rally the team, leaning slightly to the side. "BANZAI!"

The others followed their leaders example...well...tried to.

Yang/Blake/Y/n: "Banzai!/Banzai!/FOR THE EMPEROO-i mean-Banzai! Hehe..."

Yang gave him a light smack on the back of the head, and he held it in mock pain. Weiss facepalmed in exasperation but they set to work decorating anyway.

Yang is seen placing a poster up on the wall with several muscular men and the words 'THE ACHIEVE MEN' printed on it.

Weiss somehow got a hold of a painting of a beautiful red forest, known as the Forever Fall Forest, and placed it on the wall, angling it to perfection before walking away.

Blake is seen unpacking books and placing them on the bookshelves before she accidentally pulls out a book titled 'Ninjas of Love'. Her eyes widen at her mistake and she looks around frantically making sure nobody saw, before she put the book away.

Y/n had gotten a rather crazy idea and managed to get a hold of a large white blank piece of cardboard. He summoned a duffel bag that clanked as it hit the floor, and opened to reveal a ton of cans of spray paint. He trsted the shadowy objects making sure the color worked, before he set to work making something.

Ruby had pulled out Crescent Rose and was angling it against the left curtain on the window. Once she got the right angle she slashed straight through the curtain, diagonally cutting it in half. The noise caught Y/ns' attention as he looked up from his work on the floor to see a very nervous Ruby and a cut curtain. He let out a sigh before he focused and repaired the curtain, leaving the top half red and the now repaired bottom half black.

Eventually all the teammates gathered in front of the door next to Y/n, who was still hard at work with his art. The room is decorated, but no space was left for the beds, and they are haphazardly thrown into a pile in the center of the room.

Weiss: "This isnt going to work." Weiss pointed out.

Blake: "It is a bit cramped." Blake admitted.

Yang: "Maybe we should ditch some of our stuff..." Yang proposed, but Ruby had other ideas.

Ruby: "Or we could ditch the beds...and replace them with bunk beds!!" She proposed with excitement.

Weiss: "That sounds incredibly dangerous." Weiss put in.

Yang: "And super awesome!" Yang shared her sisters enthusiasm.

Blake: "It does seem efficient..." The quiet one agreed.

Y/n took no part in the conversation. He had put on a half gas mask so he wasnt breathing in the paint.

Weiss: "Well I think we should put it to a vote!" Weiss put forth with confidence.

Ruby: "Uh, I think we just did." The leader pointed out.

The sounds of two dings, a buzzer and spray paint were heard as Blake gave a thumbs up, Yang did a rock sign with her hand, and Weiss just balled her fists at her side in reluctance. The four girls rushed to work as the sound of hammering and power drills was heard. After a few moments they gathered in front of the door again to behold their masterpieces.

The bunk beds looked incredibly unstable and dangerous but they were sure itd be fine.

Y/n: "Ah-ha!" Y/n proclaimed, earning the attention of the rest of the team. He held his giant piece of cardboard in front of him, holding it out of his teams view as he examined it one last time, his half-mask hanging from his neck.

He nodded to himself in approval and walked over to a space on the wall next to the painting of forever fall. He used some duct tape on the back of the cardboard to attach it to the wall, revealing his contribution to the room. It was a painting of what looked like a graffiti artist, and a bright neon dragon dominating the background.

(I do not own this!!! I could not find the original artist but all credit goes to them! It's a great piece!)

Y/n turned to face his team and put his arms out to his sides presenting the painting.

Y/n: "Ta-daaaaa! What do you think?"

Yang, Blake and even Weiss all were pretty shocked at how nice the painting came out which was good enough for him. Ruby however practically had stars in her eyes, as she zoomed up to admire it, almost knocking Y/n off his feet.

Ruby: "THAT IS SO FREAKING COOL!!!"

Y/n: "Well I'm glad you like it. I wish I could remember the name of the guy who made it though...eh I'm sure its fine."

Ruby shook herself out of her amazement and continued the morning operation.

Ruby: "Alllllright! Our second order of business iiiiiiis...classes!"

She says as she hopes up and lands on her bed, pulling a binder out of nowhere.

"Now! We have a few classes together today. At 9 we have to be-"

Weiss: "What?! Did you say 9?!"

Ruby: "Uuuuhh..."

Weiss: "Its 8:55, you dunce!" Weiss points out. She then proceeds to run out of the dorm hurriedly in the direction of class.

Y/n: "Rude..."

Ruby is thrown off her stride at first before she collects herself and hurries her team along.

Ruby: "To class!"

The team takes off running down the hallway, Y/n closing the door on his way out. He faintly hears Jaune also yell something about being late and sees his team behind them, also running to make it to class.

They are running through the courtyard where Professors Ozpin and Glynda watch the two teams hurry to class.

Ozpin Pov

Glynda: "I'm still not sure about that Y/n boy proffesor. Whatever he is it isnt natural."

Ozpin: "Believe me Glynda, this is far from the strangest thing to have happened. Besides, the boy has potential you have to agree."

Glynda: "I suppose..."

As we watched the two teams I noticed something off. I called out to them from our spot so they could correct the error.

Ozpin: "Uniform Mr. L/n!!!"

Y/n (in the distance): "Aww come on!!!"

He flicked his hand and his attire changed to that of the Beacon uniform.

Ozpin: "Thank you!"

I took a sip of my coffee as we watched them leave.

Ozpin: "Much better..."
