The Wrong Case
Reporters are trained to develop a sixth sense, a nose for when a story smells fishy. And something about this one wasn't right. First of all, every piece of the puzzle was adding up together too well. Of course it's every reporter's dream to have the perfect story, one that nobody could touch. But this just doesn't feel right.
I look over my make-shift case file, flipping through the pages of notes an interviews. After finding a five-year-old cold case, Officer James Carter put the pieces together and found the serial rapist and murderer whose been at large since his first victim eight years ago. Officer Carter found and arrested Mark Shaw for the rape and murder of nineteen women. What I don't understand is that he was one of the original suspects when the case was first opened but was ignored since he had an alibi for all but one of the murders. And on top of that, after five years, one cop is able to put all the pieces together even when a whole task force of people weren't able to figure it out when the evidence was fresh!
I sigh, after watching Mark's public execution last night, I can't seem to forget this case, there has to be something that's being missed! It almost feels like after all these years, evidence was planted just so they could have a win on the board and they wouldn't have to deal with the large black mark on their records that was Mark Shaw.
I shake my head and shut the case file, ready to retire for the night. I grab the remote to turn off the TV when an alarm rings and the screen glows red. "Breaking news from downtown Pittsburgh today. Just over an hour ago, a young woman was found, raped and killed in a dumpster with the note 'You got the wrong man...' pinned to her shirt. The description of this crime fits the MO of the recently executed man, Mark Shaw. So the question now is, do we have a new copy-cat killer? Or did we just watch an innocent man die?" I drop the remote and cover my mouth. There's still a killer roaming our streets.
