The Other Option

I asked her if she was joking. Her frown told me she wasn't. "Every last penny, gone." she said. "And that's not the worst of it," she continued, leaning across the table she points at our map, indicating our armory. "They even took all of our weapons." She rubs at her eyes, still feeling the effects of whatever they pumped trough our vents to knock us all out.

I rub at my chin, fingers coming back slick with blood. I must have hit it on something when I fell unconscious. "Any casualties?"

She shakes her head. "No, and the only injuries were the ones attained when falling because of the gas." She throws the wooden pointer that she was holding onto the table, it rolls to a stop at the edge of the map. "It seems like it was merely a fortune run. They knocked us out, took what they wanted, and left. There was no indication that this was personal, it was like the way children will take from their siblings. They might as well have left a thank you note!"

I begin to pace the room, faces looking at me for direction. "So this wasn't revenge, nor was it an act of any feeling. They used us as their supplier and that was it." A thought shines in the back of my head and I look around, dismissing everyone but Ari.

"What are you thinking, Brother?" I stop pacing and look at the pointer she was just holding.

"There's only two explanations for what happened tonight. Somebody felt we weren't doing enough, so they turned to some other group and told them how to get what we have in exchange for rank. Or we've become sloppy, which of course, is unlikely." Ari's face pales and she rises from her seat, no longer groggy.

"Who do you think it could've been?" I shake my head, it could be any of the people I just sent out of the room, maybe even someone lower in rank.

"I don't have a clue, all I know is that we have to keep this close to the vest." Ari nods and crosses the room to me.

"Do you think it's possible there's a third option?" Her voice becomes cool and my brow has barely furrowed before her hand plunges a knife into my chest. "Maybe I was proving how easy it would be to beat someone as soft as you?"

She pulls out the knife and I fall to the ground, gasping like a fish out of water. "We sill have everything, it's all just offsite." Ari smiles and I understand the third option, a coup.

"Why?" I choke on the word while blood fills my mouth. She doesn't respond, instead her laughter chases after me as the world tilts and goes dark.
