One of Those Days
The lake was as still and shiny as glass, as if he could step on it and walk all the way across. It was one of those days when anything seems possible, and he stood there, breathing deep and imaging the winter formal. He and Marie are matching (as per her request), she is in a teal dress and he had a teal bow tie over his white dress shirt.
Everything falls into place, her senior friends accept him as the little sophomore brother of their group and even get along with his odd friends. It's the perfect story to the perfect night. He had imagined that night just as many others throughout the year until he had finally got up the courage to talk to her and ask her to the dance.
He and Marie are in the same advanced placement calculus class, he was in senior year math while taking the rest of his classes at the usual sophomore level, so he was used to odd looks from the older kids, all except Marie, she smiled and welcomed him into the class. He instantly fell for her, head over heels and everything.
The two of them would occasionally talk, topics never straying from calculus and their teacher Mr. Johnson. Imagine his surprise when the words "would you go to the formal with me?" came out instead of what he meant to ask about todays lecture.
Marie motioned to her three girl friends to wait to go to lunch for a minute and spoke. "I've been waiting for you to ask. I would love to."
He stood there, shell-shocked as she walked away, smiling to her friends. It's now after school and he stands at the lake half a mile away from his house, too over the moon with happiness to be stuck inside his house. He holds a few rocks in his hands, all shapes and sizes. He whoops loudly into the air and throws the rocks out of his hands, toward the water.
He turns away, still lake in his mind as it ripples behind his turned back. Marie actually said yes! He walks back to his house, head held high with his mind in the clouds. Nothing could happen to ruin this feeling that warms his whole body. Nothing could stop him from being the happiest he has been in along time, because it's just one of those days.
