Not Quite What Was Planned

The desert is an unforgiving place. This one is called Death Valley for a reason. Every living thing there has to fight for survival. And we would have to fight, too, or else we will turn into the dust under our feet. As we walk, my mind flashes back to the crash. Blaring alarms. Screaming passengers. Burning pain. Our helicopter ride of five turned into a stumbling trek of two.

Jane and Martin died on impact, Harvey our pilot, however, lasted a little longer. Jason and I managed to pull him from the wreckage but he died of a slashed artery in his arm because I couldn't get he tourniquet tied off soon enough.

Now, Jason and I are all that remains of our team and we're forced to walk in this God awful dessert until somebody finds us. This was supposed to be a fun-filled, trip-of-a-life-time experience, but instead we've seen Death himself claim three people, and will be left physically and psychically scarred for the remainder of time.

Jason stumbles, nearly pulling the both of us to the ground. I pull him back up and shift his arm that is across my shoulders. My hands are slick with so much blood that I can't tell what belongs to me and our fallen comrades, it all mixes in a horrifying red painting on my body. Once my hand has a firm grasp on his wrist, I move my other hand back to my side. I look at Jason's face when he huffs, his leg pounding with pain.

We had been on opposite sides of the copter and when we crashed, we both got cable and door injuries. The metal beside me, cut through the left side of my waist, going about an inch deep at its worst part. Jason had gotten caught in his thigh, a chuck of fatty tissue was taken out of his right leg. Luckily, neither of our injuries hit any major arteries, but we could still bleed out if we don't get spotted soon. The blistering heat weighs on me, fogging my head with an unneeded inability to focus.

"If we survive, I'm switching majors." We both shake with pitiful laughter at his words. We're both geology majors, we were coming out here for our mid-term project.

"If we survive, I'm taking a long vacation, then I'll switch majors." We lapse into silence after another round of pitiful laughter and continue to hobble along.

We somehow manage to walk another mile and a half when Jason notices a black object in the distant sky. I carefully lower him to the ground and start flailing my arms as best I can to catch the attention of our salvation.
