Belief
The darkness was thick and suffocating, like a heavy blanket had been thrown on the world. He had to get over the wall, had to get across the border before the cops caught up with him.
His hands slip on the wall, blood making the climb more than difficult. After an eternity of climbing, slipping, and climbing again, he makes it over the wall. The drop was the next hard part. The landing jarred his knees, pain screaming throughout his legs. It takes a few attempts to stand and continue running.
Half a mile passes before he sees another soul. "Halt! What is the reason for your trespassing?" He skids to a stop, panting as he tried to catch his breath.
"I...I didn't do it! Please help me!" Despair jabs at his insides when the guard stays silent.
"Let him in." A new voice enters from the right of the pair, in the direction of a large building. He's rushed in, surrounded by five armed guards and placed in front of an old man with a young girl behind him, she looks to be about the same age as he.
"What is it you need, my boy?" He looks at the man, he was the new voice from outside.
He clears his throat and thought of what to say. "I...she, we..." The man rolls his eyes.
"C'mon, spit it out boy." He shakes his head at the man's comment.
"I didn't kill her!" Everybody in the room reacts. The guards reach for weapons, the man flinches back, and the girl no longer looks completely bored.
"What is this about murder? And explain the blood on your hands." His breathing speeds up and the grip of fear hold him tighter.
"I, I got home and she was lying on the ground, coughing and choking on her own blood. I tried to help her but she died anyway. Right after she died the cops came and my DNA was all over her and the crime scene so I had to run. I swear, I'm telling the truth!" The old man considers this, then walks down to him.
"Look me in the eye and tell me you speak the truth." The man's cold stare chills him to the core.
"I swear to you, I'm telling the truth." The man nods and walks back to where he was sitting with the young girl. Blue and red lights stream through the windows only seconds later.
"It's to bad for you that I don't believe you." Police storm through the door and the world goes as dark as the night sky.
