They Finally Meet

A/N: This is gonna be a little inaccurate with books 6-9, but hey, it's a fanfiction; that means pretty much anything goes. BTW, YES, SOME PARTS ARE DIRECT QUOTES FROM THE BOOKS. DEAL WITH IT.

Joy watched, slightly amused, as an angry Skywing dragonet and a furious Seawing dragonet screamed at each other. She wasn't sure why they were fighting, but it seemed interesting enough. Interesting enough to stall for. Rainkeeper and Joy had onlybeen at Jade Mountain for a few hours, and already Joy missed the rainforest. They'd said goodbye to their parents, which was a lot harder to do then Joy expected. It hadn't really occurred to her that she wasn't going to be with them for a while. So, she found herself slightly clinging to Rainkeeper. His sleeping cave was on the other side of the school, but he'd agreed to come with her as she found hers. He wasn't going to admit it, but he didn't feel comfortable leaving his little sister alone.

Moonwatcher winced as the loud thoughts of other students yelled in her head. And all the thoughts were about one dragon. She peeked out into the hallway to see Clay holding apart two angry dragonets. A small Skywing dragonet was right by Clay, glancing around nervously.

Clay! the voices in Moon's head called. It's him, it's really him! Oooo he's even cuter in real life. I think he looked at me!

Great, one voice rang out, this one less excited than the others. They love him already. Moon frowned at that voice. Who had said that?

"It's only the first day folks," Clay announced. "Nothing to be so grumpy about already. You're probably both just hungry." He turned to the Skywing next to him. "Air, I'll talk to you later," he promised, before turning back to the fighting dragonets. "Carnelian, take a deep breath and see me later. Pike, walk with me." With that, Clay and one of the dragonets walked down the hall. To Moon's alarm, the other dragonet - Carnelian- stormed into Moon's cave and slumped onto a rock ledge. Moon glanced back at the hallway to see the other Skywing dragonet looking equally alarmed.

"I guess that's one of my clawmates," Joy noted. Rainkeeper nodded.

"Have fun with her." he replied. He glanced at his sister. "I should probably go find my cave." he suggested. Joy hesitated.

"Alright." she agreed. "I'll see you later?" Rainkeeper nodded.

"I'll most likely be in the Art cave for the rest of the year if you should ever need me." he insisted. Joy smiled.

"Well, I'll be sure to drag you out every now and then." she promised. "Bye."

"Bye." he replied, walking down the hall. Okay, Joy thought. Time to go meet the grouch-meister and whoever else I'm sharing a cave with.

Moon stood awkwardly in the cave, debating whether or not to talk to the still fuming Skywing. Just as she decided against it, the other Skywing that had been in the hallway walked in.

Oh good, this dragon thought as she spotted Moon. I'm sharing a cave with someone besides the angry Skywing. I hope this one's friendlier. She seems shy, yet nice. Maybe we'll get along. Well, we probably won't if we just keep staring at each other. What do I do? Duh, try talking to her. Genius, Air, genius. But what do I say? Small talk? Maybe ask her name? Maybe I should just say hi, yea. Do that. Hi is a start, right?

It suddenly occurred to Moon that she probably should've said something during this awkward pause. But she hadn't, so....too late. As she continued to stare, Moon noticed some odd things. This dragonet had brown eyes. Skywings only had orange or yellow eyes. And this dragonet had brown scales on the corners of her wings. Skywings didn't have that. How come she looked different?

"Um, hi," the dragonet said suddenly. "I'm Air."

"Oh!" Moon said, snapping back to reality. "Hi, um. My name's Moon - I mean Moonwatcher, but really, just....Moon." she stammered. Air smiled shyly.

"You nervous too?" she asked. Moon nodded. Air let out a sigh of relief. "Good, I'm not the only one." she exclaimed.

"Um," Moon began. "I don't mean to be rude, but I was just wondering, uh, how come you look different?" Ugh, smooth, Moon, real smooth, she yelled at herself. "I mean...um..." she trailed off.

"Oh!" Air replied, catching on. "I'm a hybrid. My mother is a Skywing, but my father is a Mudwing. That's why. Um..." she paused. Might as well get it out now, she thought. "My father is Clay, actually."

"Cool," Moon responded. "I've never met a hybrid before. Or a Mudwing for that matter, or a Skywing. Or any other dragons really." she trailed off.

"Same." Air agreed. "This is the first time I've ever met any dragons outside of my family." she admitted. My family, she thought. I wonder what Mother and Squelch are doing right now. Dad said they would visit....But when?

"Then I guess we have something in common." Moon offered. Air smiled at her and glanced around the room. Still empty was a hammock strung from the ceiling, a moss bed, and a reed mat.

"So, I guess we have one more clawmate." Air realized.

"I guess so." Moon agreed.

As if on cue, a Rainwing dragonet burst into the room.

"So," she declared. "What's up?"  The dragonet turned to Moon and Air and analyzed them. "You're a hybrid." she told Air, smiling at her.

"And?" Air asked.

"And so am I." the dragonet replied. Moon frowned until she spotted the star pattern under the new dragonet's wings, and her silver eyes.

"Nightwing Rainwing?" Moon guessed.

"Yep!" she replied, surveying the room. "Anybody mind if I take the hammock?"

"No." Air insisted.

"Great." she exclaimed, jumping on the hammock.

"Oh!" she remembered, whacking herself on the forehead. "I'm Joy, by the way."

"I'm Air."

"I'm Moon."

"And whose that?" Joy asked, pointing at Carnelian. "Do we have to guess?"

"Please don't." Carnelian announced.

"Well I can clearly see which one of us is the happiest." Joy replied.

"Oh yeah." Carnelian insisted. "I'm so happy, I could die of joy."

"Haha. No pun intended." Joy suggested. "But that can be arranged if you'd like." she added, whipping out a couple of sharp discs. Moon's eyes widened.

"Ooooo," Air trailed off, walking over to get a closer look. Carnelian glanced over and spotted the blades. She jumped up and ran over.

"Can I hold one?" she asked. Joy nodded and passed one to her and one to Air. Moon slowly walked out of the cave as the others examined the weapons.

Not watching where she as going, Moon backed up into someone.

"Sorry!" two voices exclaimed as they jumped away from each other. Moon found herself looking at another Nightwing. He frowned at her.

"You look like you've seen a ghost. What happened?" he asked.

"They put me in a cave of psychopaths." Moon declared.

The Nightwing glanced into the cave and smothered a laugh.

"Well," he began. "I don't know about the Skywings, but that Rainwing is definitely crazy." Moon nodded.

Joy glanced up at a familiar voice and spotted Nightflyer in the doorway, talking to Moon.

"Nightflyer!" she yelled, jumping off the hammock and running towards him.

"Hey Joy." he replied.

"I see you've met Moon." she noted. He nodded. "Air! Carnelian! This is my friend Nightflyer!" Joy called. Carnelian ignored her, but Air turned.

"Hi," she said. Moon nearly gasped at he thought that went through Nightflyer's head. Wow, he thought as soon as he saw Air. She's beautiful. But those eyes....I've never seen a Skywing with brown eyes before. But they're not really brown- they're incredible. They look like sunrises in the rainforest.....I think she just topped everything on my list of the most beautiful things in the world.

It took all of Moon's willpower to not react. She didn't need to have a vision of the future to know that he'd just fallen in love.

Boom.
