On the road

My muscles still ached and were left entirely sore, I sat behind the driver's seat, looking out the window morosely. As mother loaded the bags and suitcases into the car, Stephanie sat adjacent to me. We contemplated on what will happen to us, the skies began to darken as tiny water droplets began to fall one by one.

"We'll be back, right mom?" Stephanie asked as mother sat in the driver's seat. She turned her body to face Stephanie, her eyes full of sadness and emotion.

"we're not going back, once I make the phone call to the transportation service, our furniture we'll be moved into a new house."

It was a good idea, living in the apartment next to the infamous alleyway. Would remove the trauma I've endured when the Wayne's died. Stephanie and I took one last glance at the building, the rain started to pour down hard.

It wasn't easy to see through the splattered droplets hitting against the window, blurring our vision.

The road was steady, with a few speed bumps and unsuspecting potholes. The rain still poured, as mother had the windshield wiping away the droplets, I continued to stare out of my window blankly. My mind was foggy and unproductive, hardly entertaining me or taking away the despair I felt.

"Big brother, are you alright?" Stephanie asked, genuinely worried about me as a little sister should be, "Stephanie, refer to her as you're big sister, not you're brother." The way she said it grinded my gears, I slowly began cracking my knuckles with loud pops, Stephanie winced as she couldn't stand the sound of joints in my bones cracking.

Once I finished, I slipped my hands into the warm part of my hoodie. Petting the dust bunnies that lived deep in my pockets. Stephanie leaned in, whispering, "Big brother. I'm bored, do you want to play eye spy?"

I smiled and agreed.

"I spy with my little eye, an arch, so majestic and photo generic that contains all of the prettiest of colors, beginning with the color red and ending in a magenta purple."

Stephanie's face lightened up like the sun as she pointed aggressively at the rainbow that I described in great detail. "I spy with my little eye, a drive-thru for a fast food joint just up ahead, with the letter M as their logo!" Instantly both our faces lit up, "Mickey D's!!!" We both shouted. As mother smiled to herself proudly,

we pulled into the parking lot, then the drive-thru. Stephanie wanted 10 piece chicken nuggets with buffalo sauce and coca-cola as her drink. while I requested a happy meal with large fries and lemonade. Mother got the same thing that Stephanie had ordered. Once we received the food choices, we parked the car and had lunch.

I sipped my lemonade and devoured my hamburger along with the fries that were served hot and fresh, dipped into the awesome sauce to give it a more rich flavor. Stephanie burped after drinking a full gulp of her carbonated drink, "that was good!" I yawned.

Mother collected the debris that was left behind, leaving the car to expose the waste. I unbuckled my seat lying down and spreading comfortably, Stephanie scoffed. no fair, get your legs off of me!" Stephanie whined as I ignored her protests. " oh, stop you're complaining!" I teased as Stephanie made tiny death noises, mother came back into the car.

Witnessing what I was doing to my sister, "Jacqueline, Get your legs off of her, now!" I groaned, fixing my posture in an appropriate sitting position as much as I despised it. "I'm tired, though!!!!!" I complained as Stephanie giggled quietly, I gave her the death glare.
