Aftermath

My head spun a little as I laid there in confusion too what just happened, I had no memory of it. Only just the scary trance and the lucid nightmares of the parallel alternative of what could have happened to my younger sister Stephanie. I had no idea if she was even alive or worse, Aunt Linda dried her face from the tears. She helped me get up to my feet, it was challenging, but I managed.

My arm was wrapped around Aunt Linda as she did most of the heavy lifting, I felt my feet begin to drag a little across the floor like I was dead weight. We got into the kitchen, and I settled down in one of the chairs, Aunt Linda poured me a small glass of milk with a petri dish of chocolate chip cookies. I wanted to devour them all and chug the creamy milk along with it, but Aunt Linda sat across from me drinking from her own glass of milk.

"May I have one of the cookies, please?" She asked as I pushed the plate towards her, she grabbed one and bit piece off of it before dipping it into her milk and eating the whole thing, leaving small crumbs to float around in her glass. I liked being with Aunt Linda, as a small child, I never really had any relations with her, or hardly ever known her.

All that I did know was that Mother hated her guts and would often tell these awful stories about her, and at the time, I believed every word she said. I was only five. Being with her now in the present, my mother was wrong about her, Aunt Linda was the nicest person I could know and even her dog Lulu. We finished our glasses of milk along with the chocolate chip cookies. I put my glass in the sink, and as I did, I heard the phone ring. "I'll get it!"

Aunt Linda, as she took the phone off of its handle, put it against her ear as to communicate with the person on the other side of the telephone line. I pretended to not hear or eavesdrop on the conversation, I convinced myself that it had nothing to do with me or the current situation that was happening.

I turned on the faucet, and immediately cold water rushed out, I waited for a bit for it to warm up. As I did, I stared out of the window, outside it looked empty, blank, and abandoned of sunlight. I continued to stare into the abyss of nothingness, longing for something. Whatever that could be. "Yes, she's right here, hold on!" Aunt Linda looked at my direction. I stopped cleaning the glass and turned the faucet off, Aunt Linda gave me a grim expression.

I took the phone from her hands and placed the speaker up to my ear, there was static noise in the background. "Hello?"

"Jacqueline, is that you?"

"Yes, Mother, it's me! How is Stephanie??"

"She's alright, but we're not going home, she's going to have to stay at the hospital overnight, understood?"

"Y-Yes, Mother, I understand."

"Give the phone back to your Auntie."

I wanted to hang up on her or put the phone back on the handle. But I willingly gave it back to Aunt Linda and went into the living room to rest.
