The Hospital
I opened my eyes and bright lights met them and nearly blinded me. I shielded my face and blinked a few times, trying to get used to the intensity of the light. I could hear two soft voices, whispering something at the other end of the room.
"She seems fine except for a few scratches." I could hear one say.
"I checked her records." Answered and the second voice. "She has a few minor mental illnesses but nothing to cause her to black out like that."
"We'll wait until she wakes up, and we'll asked her."
I lay soundlessly on what I was pretty sure was a hospital bed. They were still talking but quieter now so I couldn't make out the rest of what was said. I sat up and brushed my hair out of my face. I had done something horrible last night, I knew I had, but I couldn't remember. I wasn't really sure if I wanted to. I looked around and saw a young nurse wheeling around a trolley across the room. She was coming towards me.
"Oh, your awake, I'm glad, I was starting to worry you'd never wake up." She said to me.
"H- how long have have I been asleep for?" I asked.
"Oh, almost a week." She answered. "Here, have a drink of water." She handed me a plastic water bottle. I thanked her and drank some. "The doctor was meaning to ask you a few questions, would you mind if I went to fetch him now?"
"I don't mind." I replied. The nurse smiled and walked out of the room.
I sat drinking my water. The intense brightness of the room was hurting my eyes. I took a deep breath. What I had done was beginning to form in my memory. I had transformed again, into a monster, into a beast, I had killed someone, I was sure.
The doctor came in to the room and I turned to face him. He greeted me with a kind, apologetic smile.
"Fiona, is it?" He asked. I nodded. He took a seat at the end of my bed. "I have a few questions to ask, please answer them truthfully." I nodded again.
"First question, what do you remember from last night." I told him everything I could remember, when I mentioned the shapeshifting he looked at me strangely but still kept his kind and respectful attitude.
"Second question, has this ever happened before?" He asked.
I nodded and told him about the first time it happened, when I was only twelve. The the doctor pulled out a sheet of paper.
"These are all the people to be killed or injured at the time of the incident, do you know any of them?" I scanned over the piece of paper, and I saw Derek, my heart stoped, the colour drained out of my face, I remembered, I remembered what happened, I killed him, it took form. I was breathing heavily as the memories came to me. "He tried to save me, and I killed him." I buried my face in my knees. The doctor put his hand on my shoulder.
"It's ok, his injuries were out of this world, there is no way you could have done that, it had to be something else." The doctor said in a calm reassuring voice.
"No," I said, "I turned, into the beast, I killed him." Tears poured down my face. I could feel that fuzzy feeling, the one I feel when I transform. I took a deep breath. I need to control myself. I had a drink of water. The feeling was still their but it didn't get worse. Fortunately.
"You didn't do that." The doctor said kindly. "It just isn't possible." I shook my head. I tried to tell him, I wanted to scream and cry but I had to wait, until I'm alone.
"You need rest." The doctor told me. "I'll go." He stood up and left the room, closing the door behind him. I watched him through the window. He said something to another doctor outside who wrote something down on his clipboard before they walked of together down the hall.
I had some more water. I reflected on what had happened. I shouldn't have told him. I thought to myself. He'll think I'm loony, I'll be locked up. I sat on my bed, thinking hard. I heard the door open and the nurse from before walked in with a meal on her trolley.
"Eat up." She said, handing it to me. "You'll need the energy."
