...
Y/n stirred in her sleep when she felt the brush of someone's kisses on her cheek that moved along her jaw and to the soft skin of her neck. She sighed in content, relaxing into the touch because she knew who it was. Even if she couldn't sense his familiar presence she would be able to recognize the feel of his lips on her skin. When she turned her head towards him he gave her a gentle kiss to wake her up nicely. When he pulled away she cracked her eyes open to find Stiles smiling down at her.
"Stiles. How did you get in here?" She asked groggily, her brain still trying to wake up. He held up a key in answer and she could assume that it went to the front door of her house. She blinked at him. "Why am I not surprised? I don't even wanna know how you got that. I do wanna know why you're here at..." She glanced at the digital clock on her nightstand. "Almost midnight?"
"It's Mischief Night, babe. We got mischief to do. Plus it's Coach's birthday, a special occasion."
"Why would I get out of my very comfortable bed to play a prank on Coach?"
"Uh, well, because your incrediblly loving boyfriend asked you very nicely?" He tried.
"Hmm. Not good enough."
"I will love you forever?"
"Getting warmer."
"I'll buy you snacks later?"
"Deal. Wait for me outside." She gave him a quick peck before getting out of bed. He did as she asked while she changed quickly and then quietly crept out of the house before getting into the Jeep and riding with Stiles to the school. He led her to the locker room with a flashlight in hand and a bag on his shoulder while he called Scott to wrangle him into the shenanigans as well.
"Get your ass down here now. We have a job to do."
"Dude, I'm already in bed. And aren't we getting a little old for this?"
"We do this for Coach."
"I thought we did this to Coach."
"Whatever, okay? You know he needs this. He lives for this stuff. He loves it."
"I wouldn't necessarily say he loves it."
"Is that Y/n?"
"Hey, Scotty."
"Yeah, I picked her up on the way here."
"But it's the middle of the night."
"Tell me about it."
Stiles opened his locker and handed the light for Y/n to hold. "12:15 actually. Which means it's after midnight and officially Mischief Night/Day," he grabbed a drill and put it in his bag, "and, by perfectly awesome coincidence, it also happens to be Coach's birthday. So if you're not down here in five seconds, I will destroy you." He shoved more things in his bag as Y/n looked behind her and smiled. "Okay? And I mean five, four, three, two-" He turns and jumps back, falling to the ground with a grunt as Scott walked forward with his eyes glowing Alpha red.
He blinked and they shifted back while he smirked. "One."
"I hate you." Y/n laughed.
Together the golden trio raided Coach's office and removed every nut, bolt, and screw that held anything in place, carefully setting everything up so it looked normal, and then placing all of the loose hardware in a present box that they sat on Coach's desk. The whole room would fall apart as soon as he touched the box.
With that done they returned to their respective homes to get a little more rest before they returned to the school for the actual school day. Scott got off his motorbike and looked over to see the twins on their own motorcycles, dismounting them to meet up with the new True Alpha. "You're back in school?" He asked them.
"No, just to talk." Ethan said.
Stiles and Y/n walked up then, the girl holding her promised snack while Stiles spoke up. "Oh. That's kind of a change of pace for you guys. Usually, you're just hurting, maiming, and killing."
"You need a pack. We need an Alpha." Aiden said to Scott, not looking at Stiles.
"Yeah. Absolutely not. That's hilarious though."
"You came to us for help. We helped." Ethan claimed.
"You kicked the shit out of him." Y/n reminded.
"Yeah, that's not helping." Stiles agreed. "In my opinion, that's actually counter-productive."
"Why would I say yes?" Scott asked them.
"We'd add strength. We'd make you more powerful." Aiden prompted.
"Not everyone is out for power." Y/n said.
"There's no reason to say no."
Stiles rolled his eyes at them as Isaac joined the three. "I can think of one. Like the two of you holding Derek's claws while Kali impaled Boyd. In fact, I don't know why we're not impaling them right now."
Aiden's eyes shifted as his fangs poked out with a warning growl. "You wanna try?"
Isaac took a step to take up the challenge when Scott grabbed his wrist and the Beta stepped down. "Sorry, but they don't trust you." Scott said. "And neither do I." Scott walked passed them with the other three following his lead.
Isaac split off and when the three walked through the doors a roll of toilet paper bounced off of Stiles' face. "All right, that's my face!" He yelled at the student that threw it. Y/n chuckled and picked up the roll, throwing it and nailing the student in the face as well. Stiles smiled at her before patting Scott on the shoulder. "Hey, dude, good decision, buddy. Good Alpha decision."
"I hope so."
"No, you know so." They stopped by Stiles' locker and Scott spotted Kira down the hall.
Y/n smiled at her friend's staring and Stiles noticed it too. "What are you looking at?" She asked even though she knew.
"Me?" Scott asked.
"No, the kid down the hall. Yes, you."
"You looking at her?" Stiles asked while glancing at Kira.
"Her?" Scott asked again. "Who her?"
"New girl her. Kira." Y/n named.
"You like her?"
"No." Scott answered too quickly. "I mean... Yeah, yeah, she's okay. She's new."
"I seem to remember you have a slight thing for new girls." Y/n pointed out with a teasing smirk.
"Ask her out." Stiles prompted.
"Now?" Scott seemed a bit surprised.
"Yes, now." Stiles shut his locker, putting his arm over Y/n's shoulders as they continued to walk down the hall.
"Right now?"
"No, next week." Y/n was very amused with her jokes.
"Right now." Stiles repeated. "Scott, I don't think you get it yet. You're an Alpha. You're the apex predator. Everyone wants you. You're like the hot girl that every guy wants."
"The hot girl?" Scott seemed to like that idea as Isaac came back around to them and looked at the three.
"You're the hottest girl." Y/n assured with a smile as her and Stiles continued down the hall.
"What?" Isaac asked Scott.
"I'm the hot girl." Scott became enamored with his new revelation.
Not sure how else to respond Isaac nodded. "Yes, you are." Scott grinned and chuckled to himself and walked away while Isaac smiled after him amusedly.
In Economics Y/n sits next to Stiles with Scott behind her, the three eagerly waiting to hear anything from Coach when a sudden angry yell echoed from his office. "SON OF A BITCH!" The class laughed as Y/n shared a look with Stiles and Scott. Coach walked into class from his office, slamming the door behind him. "Mischief Night, Devil's Night. I don't care what you call it. You little punks are evil." The class laughed again. "You think it's funny every Halloween my house gets egged? A man's house is supposed to be his castle." He slammed his hands on Y/n's desk in frustration and she covered her mouth to keep from literally laughing out loud. "Mine's a frickin' omelet." He went to his desk and picked up a present box with a card propped against it. "Oh, this? We're gonna do this again?" He let it fall to the ground. "I don't think so."
"Wait, Coach, don't-!" Y/n is cut off by Coach stomping on the box only to hear a shattering sound. She sighed and shook her head. She saw the boy put the present on the desk as they were all sitting down.
Coach was shocked that the box wasn't another trick and crouched down to examine the contents. He found a personalized mug with his picture on it and #1 COACH printed underneath. He put down the fragment and looked at the card that had fallen to the floor as well, reading it's script out loud. "'Happy Birthday. Love, Greenberg'." Coach was always so mean to Greenberg and Y/n felt a little bad for him. Poor Greenberg.
...
Y/n had been trading out some of her books at her locker when her hands stilled and she frowned. Her stomach suddenly turned and she felt sick. She almost felt as if she was going to throw up. She hurried with her locker and rushed to the nearest bathroom just incase she was actually going to be sick. But after a few minutes of feeling nauseous and nothing coming up she decided to just try and deal with it. She walked out of the bathroom just in time to see Lydia and Aiden coming out of Coach's still ruined office. She didn't really like Aiden with Lydia, but at the moment she was just trying to keep her turning stomach at bay.
She walked passed Coach's office only to pause by the door. Her stomach twisted almost painfully. There was a darkness in there. The air was heavy with it. Her eyes became glued to the door as they started to glow without her knowledge. Whispers greeted her ears, whispers of the dead. They were trying to tell her something as different sounds echoed in her ears.
A bus door opening.
Kids chatting.
An explosion.
Screams.
"Their eyes were glowing."
She was startled when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She blinked and her eyes went back to e/c as she turned to see Stiles looking at her. "Hey, I was calling you. Are you okay?"
"Uh, yeah. I was lost in thought, I guess."
He gave her a look as he glanced at Coach's door, which she had been staring at, but let it go because there was something a little more important going on. "We need to get the others. I'll explain on the way." She nodded and followed him down the hall, taking one last look over her shoulder at the door before facing forward again. They soon gathered Lydia, Allison, and Isaac and then they all started looking for Scott as Stiles told them what he had heard from his dad.
"Barrow went after kids with glowing eyes?" Isaac asked Stiles followed by a question from Y/n.
"He said those exact words?" The spirits told her something about that.
"Yeah." Stiles answered. "And no one knows how he woke up from anesthesia. Just that when they opened him up, they found a tumor full of live flies, which in any other circumstance would be all kinds of awesome."
"Did you say flies?" Lydia asked as she paused in her steps making the others stop as well.
"Lydia?" Y/n looked at her friend.
"All day I have been hearing this sound. It's like... This buzzing."
"Like the sound of flies?" Allison questioned.
"Exactly like the sound of flies."
Stiles grabbed Y/n's hand as he said they should split up to find Scott, and dragged the witch down the hall with him as he ran. After a few minutes they skid to a stop as they found the werewolf outside a classroom. "Hey, dude, where the hell have you been?" Stiles asked as he walked up to him and Lydia ran up to them a moment after.
"The police are leaving." She informed. "Why are they leaving?"
"The police?" Scott asked, but Stiles answered Lydia's question.
"They must have cleared the building and grounds, which means he's not here."
"Who? What are you guys-"
"He has to be here." Y/n urged over Scott's confusion. "I've had this sick feeling for a while, like something was wrong. And I heard whispers earlier. It was the warning from the victims, a warning that he's here."
"And that sound..." Lydia added, "The buzzing I've been hearing? It's getting louder."
"How loud?" Stiles asked.
She didn't answer right away, cringing a bit at the intensity. "Almost deafening."
"We gotta find my dad." Stiles ran off and Y/n followed him yet again as they searched for the Sheriff, finding him with other officers as they started to leave the building. "Dad! Dad!"
"Yeah?" He answered as they caught up.
"You can't leave yet."
"We got an eye witness that puts Barrow by the train station."
"Let's go, Stilinski." Rafael called.
"Whoa, whoa. Dad, please just... Y/n and Lydia said that he's still here."
"Did they see him?"
"Not exactly."
"No." Y/n also answered. "Not at all, really. But we have a feeling."
"A supernatural feeling." Stiles muttered.
Noah looked a little confused as he looked at Y/n and then at Lydia who was leaning against and examining a door. "Lydia wasn't on the chessboard."
"She is now."
"Kanima?"
"Banshee, actually." Y/n supplied.
"Oh, God, really." He muttered to which Stiles rushed to their defense.
"I know. I know how it sounds. But basically it means that she can sense when someone's close to death."
"Can she sense that I'm about to kill you?"
"I don't know." The three looked back at Lydia who waved her fingers at them in greeting.
Noah returned the gesture with a wave of his own before facing the teens again. "All right, look, I'm not saying I don't believe, but right now, I'm going with eyewitness over witch and banshee."
"Eyewitnesses can also be wrong." Y/n pointed out.
"We're leaving a few depuites here. The school's on lockdown till 3:00. Nobody comes in, nobody goes out. Guys, that's the best I've got right now. That's the best I can give you, Stiles." He said as he walked away.
"You're leaving me here, that is not the- that is the worst." Noah didn't respond as he left them and Stiles sighed.
"Come on. We gotta try to find him before 3." She said and she, Stiles, and Lydia made a plan with the rest of the pack. The wolves, including Ethan and Aiden, would try to find him by scent while the other four tried something else. Y/n decided she might be of better use if she stayed with Stiles and Lydia in case they ended up finding the loose murderer.
"The bestiary is literally 1,000 pages long." Allison said as she started to open a window. "If I'm going to find anything about flies coming out of people's bodies, it could take me all night."
"And remember, the word in Archaic Latin for fly is musca." Lydia informed.
"Got it." Allison then snuck out of the school via window and Lydia looked back at the couple.
"Where do we start?" Lydia asked.
"Upstairs." Y/n suggested.
Stiles glanced at the wall clock seeing that there was less than thirty minutes left till 3 and the deputies departed. "We gotta go." The three rushed out and searched everywhere they could. Y/n reached out with her magic, trying to pick up on that feeling she had earlier or even the voices she heard before, but she wasn't getting anything. It was almost like there was an emptiness when she tried to search for him. Like a void where she should be able to feel him, like it's been cut off or blocked.
She sighed in frustration as they entered the Art classroom. "I can't feel anything. I don't understand. It was so clear earlier when I was in front of Coach's office and now there's absolutely nothing. I can't even smell him." She had gotten the scent from the hospital gown Melissa had brought, but she wasn't even picking that up.
"It's okay. We'll find him." Stiles assured before he started to look around.
"Scott and Isaac are in the basement, right?" Lydia asked.
"Yeah, with Ethan and Aiden. The plan is we meet in the middle, uh, in the boiler room."
Lydia's eyes drifted to a picture of an explosion as she realized something. "All of the wolves... Almost all of the ones with glowing eyes are in the basement at the boiler room?"
Y/n looked at the girl with wide eyes as Stiles also came to the same conclusion. "Oh, my God! An engineer could use a boiler room to blow up the whole school."
"We have to get everyone out." Y/n said.
"How do we do that?" Lydia questioned.
Stiles' answer was pulling the fire alarm. Everyone started to leave, the girls watching with relieved smiles until they turned back to the grinning Stiles and saw someone behind them. Lydia made a sound in her throat to alert him while Y/n glanced over his shoulder, telling him to turn around. His smile faded into a look of confusion as he turned is head, only to jump back in surprise when he saw Coach standing just behind him. "Wow."
He was dragged out of school by his ear by Coach while Y/n and Lydia followed just behind. "Pulling a fire alarm on Mischief Night is one thing. Doing it when there's a mass murderer spotted nearby is insane!" He finally let the boy go as they got outside. "If I was four years younger, l- I'd punch you." He claimed.
Stiles gave him a confused look. "What? Coach, that doesn't make sense."
"Oh, well, it does to me!" He walks away then in a huff.
Y/n squints her eyes in thought at the retreating teacher. "I wonder about him sometimes."
"Don't we all. Come on." Stiles brought her attention to where he spotted the wolves and the three made it over to them.
"We didn't find anything." Aiden said.
"Not even a scent." Scott added.
"Me either." Y/n shook her head.
"It's 3:00, so school's over. If there was a bomb, wouldn't he have set it off by now?" Stiles asked.
"Does that mean everybody's safe?" Ethan wondered looking to the two who felt the man in the first place.
"I don't know." Lydia answered while Y/n frowned. "I just... I don't know."
...
Y/n laid on her back on Stiles' bed, messing with one of the strands of yarn that he had sat by her head. He stood at his corkboard that held various pictures and clippings. He tacked a picture of Barrow to the board and tied a red string onto the tack and connected it to a picture of the school. "What do the different colored yarns mean?" She asked as she tilted her head back to hang off the bed and look at him upside down.
"Oh, just different stages of the investigation. So green is solved, yellow is to be determined, red is unsolved."
"You're running a little low on red." She noted.
He sighed. "Yeah, I know."
"What about blue?" She held up the skein of yarn to examine the color.
"Uh, blue's just..." He looked at her then just now realizing the position she was in, the curve of her body drawing his eyes everywhere and the shape of, well, everything doing even more to keep his gaze on her. Even the way her hair fell could only be described as, "Pretty." He finally finished his sentence, but it came out a bit more dreamier than he had intended.
She noticed the change in his tone and looked at him to find his eyes glued to her. She smirked and rolled onto her stomach. "Enjoying the view?" She teased.
"Very much so." He admitted and she chuckled.
But her amusement was short lived as he turned to the board again and her mind wandered to the days events. "Did you get detention for pulling the alarm?" She started messing with the blue string to keep her eyes off of that man's photo.
"Yep. Every day this week. It's okay, though. We were onto something." He picked up a marker and started to mess with it in his hand.
"Even though we couldn't find any proof of him being there? I just don't get it. We both felt him." She frowned and he could hear it in her voice.
"Hey, Y/n." He went over to her and crouch in front of her. "You, and Lydia, have been right every time something like this happens, okay? So don't start doubting yourself now."
"No scent. No bomb. I can't sense him anymore. And I got you in trouble." She had started to wrap the yarn around her finger absentmindedly.
"Okay, look." He stopped her hands and started to unravel it. "Barrow was there. All right? You knew it. You felt it. Okay? And look, if you wanted to, I'd go back to that school right now and search all night just to prove it."
"I'd appreciate that." She smiled at him as she looked into those pretty brown eyes she fell in love with. She leaned foward a bit and he caught the hint to move in as well as they kissed. His hand came to rest on her cheek and she pulled away with a scrunched nose after a moment, grimacing at the marker that was still in his grip. "Ugh, that stinks. I couldn't even smell you for a moment."
He huffed a laugh for a moment until the gears in his mind started turning. He looked at the marker, took the cap off, and sniffed it, smelling the light scent of chemical. This little marker was strong enough to block her heightened sense of smell for only a moment, but what if it was more than just a marker? "Get up. Get up now. We're going to the school."
"Wait, I didn't think you meant that literally." She said as he pulled her up by the hand and dragged her to the Jeep. Without much explanation he drove to the school and led her to the Chemistry class. "So what are we looking for?" He went over and opened the Chemistry closet. "I think that's supposed to be locked."
"Yeah. I know. Notice anything else?"
"It reeks of chemicals." She scrunched her nose at the scent that assaulted her airways while Stiles turned on his phone flashlight and started to look around. Then she realized she couldn't smell anything but the chemicals, not even Stiles who was right in front of her. "We wouldn't have been able to catch his scent."
He glanced at her before looking down and spotting blood. "He was here, performing very minor sugery on himself. You guys were right."
"Then why I don't I feel good about that?"
"Probably because he was here to kill somebody."
"But who?"
"That's what we gotta figure out." He got up from his crouch and started to look around the classroom. "We could spread out, start looking for... Anything." He looked in a few drawers while she glanced at the blackboard, finding three numbers there, and making her way to them. "Y/n, what are those."
"I think they're atomic numbers."
"Is it a formula?"
"I don't know. But I know someone who does." She pulled out her phone and quickly called Lydia. "Hey, Lyds, on the periodic table, what's 19, 53, and 88?" She asked once she answered and put her on speaker.
"Potassium, iodine, and radium. Why?"
"Stiles had a hunch and we came back to the school. Barrow was here, he was hiding in the chemistry closet. That's why none of us could catch his scent. And we found numbers on the blackboard. Could any of these make something dangerous?"
"Not really. The first two make potassium iodide... Write a 'K' next to 19." She instructed and Y/n did as told.
"Potassium is K?" Stiles asked in confusion.
"From kalium, the scientific neo-Latin name. Put an 'l' for 53."
"What's radium?" Y/n asked and all three seemed to come to the same conclusion.
"R-a."
Y/n wrote the letters next to 88 and they could see that the letters spelled out a name. "Kira." The couple rushed out of the school and sped to Kira's house, picking up Lydia due to her insistence, and found Scott passed out on the pavement next to his bike with blood on his forehead.
Y/n kneeled next to him and put her hand over the wound to heal it. "Scott?" She called when he started to stir. "Scott!"
He sat up with a gasp and looked at them with wide eyes. "Barrow, he took Kira!"
"We know. He was after her the whole time." Stiles informed.
Once Scott recovered enough he called Isaac to see if him and Allison found anything in the bestiary yet, but they didn't come up with anything helpful. He thanked the Beta as he hung up and turned to his friends. "We have to think of something. He's going to kill her."
"I knew he was there. How did I know that?" Lydia asked.
"The same way I did." Y/n said. "You felt it with your gift. You heard it. What do you hear now?"
"Nothing. I feel like I can do this. But I don't know what to do. It's like it's on the tip of my tongue, and I don't know how to trigger it. I just- I swear to God, it literally makes me want to scream." She paced a few steps in frustration away from the group.
"That's what you need to do, Lydia. Scream." Lydia did as instructed and let out a piercing scream making the boys cover their ears. When she was done she breathed, and she could hear something. The buzzing was back, but it was different. She looked around a bit and then up towards the streetlamp over their heads.
"It's not flies." She whipped around and looked at Y/n, making the boys jumped back a bit, slightly startled, while Y/n listened. "It's electricity."
"Wait a second," Stiles started, "Barrow was an electrical engineer. He worked at a power substation."
"What substation?" Scott asked.
They hurried there as fast as they could in the Jeep and motorbike. They screeched to a stop and Y/n turned to look at Lydia in the back. "Wait here, okay? Wait for the cops to get here." She climbed out of the car with Stiles and Lydia looked after them. Y/n quickly followed Scott while Stiles grabbed his bat from the back.
"Me? Wait, why?" Lydia asked Stiles.
He held up the bat in answer. "I only got one bat." She huffed and sat back as he followed the two supernaturals. They each went different ways to try and find them faster, but when Y/n heard Kira yell out and a crash she ran in that direction. She skid to a stop and spotted Scott on the ground with Barrow crouching over Kira. Y/n didn't have any time to react when Barrow touched Kira with the live wire. She covered her eyes from the sudden brightness and the overloaded generators sparking. After a moment she hesitiantly peeked back, but she didn't expect what she saw. Barrow was on the ground, burnt and electrocuted, while Kira stood and seemed to absorb the electricity and sparks through her hands.
It was now clear that Kira wasn't just human, but what was she? Y/n let her eyes shift for a moment and she could see the silhouette of a fox spirit around her. She's never seen one herself, but she knew what this was. A kitsune.
