Chapter 5

"Caleb. Why don't you just be yourself?" I said in a low voice, glancing at Kelsey. "That's what she likes about you." Oh no, Kelsey was going to have my goat (whatever that meant) for me telling Caleb.

Caleb eyes grew wide and hopeful. "You think she likes me? Even being part of the grammar police?"

"Yes. Because it's part of what makes you, you Caleb." I said with a smile. We got our order and took it to a table, as we were leaving I saw the eyes of my two friend's meet, and both gave bashful smiles.

Kelsey gushed about her crush as we drove, and I was listening intently, when something suddenly tumbled out of my purse. It was a journal. I picked it up, and glanced at the page it had fallen open to. I folded the page and turned back to Kelsey. We had just pulled up in front of the public library, Kelsey said, "Well here's where we part ways." We hugged and I tried to reassure her about her and Caleb. She left blushing.

I walked into the library and found a quiet place to sit at a table near the back of the building. I pulled out the journal and started to read. This journal was exactly what I needed right now. It told me everything about the "me" that lived here, held all the memories I should know about, evidently. I work as an intern at a music magazine, which sounds pretty cool, now the interview Uncle John mentioned, made more sense.I had lots of notes about the people in my life. My family, Uncle John, my siblings, Moriah & Shane. My boyfriend of a while now, Joseph Stamped, okay I honestly don't mind that part at all. My besties: Kelsey and Jamie. Who I learned had had a falling out last year, due to a miscommunication, it turned out. My best guy friends: Caleb at the coffee shop (where I went almost daily with Kelsey) and ....Alan.... at the library.

Well that would explain the familiar sounding voice I heard coming from back in the children's room. I stood up and peeked into the room. Sure enough, Alan sat in a plush chair in the midst of a half circle of children, who had their eyes glued on him. "Eww. A skunk!" Several of the kids exclaimed at once. I came closer, yep, he was reading the same book I remembered him reading to the other Anthem Lights guys way back when Kyle was still with the band.

I stood there listening, until the story came to a close. "Okay, kids. That's all for this week. Have a good week and make sure you check out some good books!" All the children hugged him, thanking 'Mr. Alan'. He spotted me as the kids were leaving. "Hey, Laya. You ready for our weekly Bible study?"
