The Realms Of Science

Dimitri's POV

I was running through the forest, running to find a way out, running to civilization and running towards a hope to bring back Rose.

The night was deathly still, and that stillness matched that in my heart. Rose's transformation, especially when I had broken my promise, was too much to bear.

I started running again.

Suddenly I felt a sharp tinge of shock, followed my a sensation of weightlessness. It felt as if the world had turned upside down. At one I was floating and at the next falling and there was an eerie red light engulfing me.

When the light disappeared, I found myself just where I was.

What had just happened?

My reverie was broken by the shrill whistling sound and something shot out from behind a bush, hitting me squarely on the chest.

I lost my balance and the soft object fell right on top of me.

"What the heck?" a female voice cried out.

That was a voice I could recognize anywhere, the voice which I had heard a few hours ago, only it was colder and deadlier.

This voice was warm and so was the body I so longed to touch.

"Roza?" surprise was evident in my voice.

"Dimitri? You here? But how? You were missing. Did they leave you? Did you escape? Oh tell me," she enquired excitedly.

"Umm... I don't understand what you mean," I was utterly surprised.

The most troubling of all was that Rose was perfectly normal. Not a, Strigoi anymore. And how was that possible if I was not dreaming.

Further I observed her. She seemed to have matured suddenly. She definitely was as beautiful as ever, but with added curves, giving her a more feminine look.

I heard the cry of a baby, a soft whimper.

Then as my eyes lay upon Rose, I saw that she had a baby strapped to her back. The baby was moving it's hands, cooing and making funny sounds, beckoning to me.

"Who's this?"

She gave me a look which said I was crazy.

"Dimitri! Tell me you don't remember Alexandra! Did they erase your memory? Aren't you Dimitri? Oh no! Don't come near me," she jumped back in panic, drawing out a funny looking metallic object.

She pressed a button and immediately a blinding column of light shot up from the blunt end until it formed a sword of lightning.

"Roza, please," I backed away, holding out my hands in a pose of surrender, "I won't hurt you."

She gave me a pointed look.

But before we could say anything further, there was a slow, grinding noise and I could see panic in her eyes.

"They're coming," she whispered, "We need to get out of here."

And then I saw what that noise was. Thousands of weird metallic flying objects were coming in our direction.

"Run before they capture you," she yelled, taking out another weird looking gun which she fired at the advancing machines.

A blue beam shot out and the device it hit, let out sparks dropping to the ground and exploding. Soon there was nothing but broken pieces.

Four more followed.

"They are too many to destroy," she commented backing off, "Here take Alexandra while I hold them back."

She unhooked the straps and handed the little thing to me.

The baby looked at me with innocent little eyes. But those eyes seemed to be looking at my soul, seeking my protection.

Her little hands touched my cheek and I felt a familiarity, as if I had known Alexandra for all eternity.

Seeing my confused expression, she gave me a toothless grin. And that flared up my determination to protect her, whoever she was.

Rose was still trying to destroy the menace of machines, when I heard noises from the bushes.

And I saw strange humans emerge. They walked like robots, all at a time, their eyes glassy. They each had a light sabre in their hand.

"Take Alexandra to safety," she commanded.

"But your safety is my priority..."I argued.

"Are you crazy? Our child is always the first priority," she screamed.

Two drones came rushing towards us. I deftly ducked. Their lasers hit the trees, burning a hole.

I stood stiff.

Our child?

But that was life and death, there was no chance to argue.

Alexandra was clinging to me by now.

"If you want to fight," she tossed me a gadget, "Use this. Just press the button and throw it away from yourself,"

I silently obeyed, unable to fathom a single thing.

As I threw away the beeping machine, I could feel the air vibrating around me.

"Cover your ears," she commanded, plugging her ears, crashing into my chest, completely sandwiching Alexandra between us so that she was completely covered.

Soon I saw the robots and the flying objects vibrate vigorously as they exploded in all directions.

Rose pressed closer to me muttering,"Activate shield."

Immediately the burning splinters struck off an invisible barrier and were being deflected.

Dry wood caught fire, and the inferno burned on but I surprisingly couldn't feel any effect.

Finally when the fire died down, Rose moved away, taking Alexandra with her.

She deactivated her shield.

"What was that? I guess I'm confused," was my first reaction.

"How old are you Dimitri?"

"Twenty-nine ," I replied surprised.

"Hmm, then you came in through the time portal. I shouldn't have kept it open," she mumbled.

"What do you mean, I enquired," How did you turn back? "

"Dimitri," her face was serious," Do you realize that I'm not the Rose you know? I'm from a different time frame and you were teleported to this realm, the year 2022. I'm actually thirty now. My Dimitri is 37 and this is Alexandra, our baby. My Dimitri has been captured, I'm afraid. I set out to search for him."

"What? You mean I'll have a child in future? But how?"

"Advancement in technologies have helped us. But science is a destructor too. The Strigoi have got new drones and humanoids to capture us. And as we try to use light sabres, nuclear guns, and sonic sound-pieces to defeat science with science. The world isn't what it used to be."

"Wait, you say that that you're the future Rose, that means Rose has turned. My Rose is a Strigoi. Then will I be able to restore her?" I was still confused.

"Future is uncertain. Every step you take affects your future. As for now, I may assist you to get to your Rose. The rest is how you handle situations. It'll determine the course of our life," she explained.

I nodded, gulping.

"Rose is where you lost her or she lost you in your first battle. You were turned," she hinted.

"You mean the caves near the St Vladimir's Academy in Montana? I want to go there. I need to save Rose," I shouted.

"Yes," she responded, dragging me by my hand towards a circle of green which appeared suddenly, "Best of luck."

She deftly gave me a push and the last I saw was Alexandra waving her little round hands, wishing me luck.

I was back in my time.

Montana, here I come!
