Chapter 13: December 6th, 1963, 6:00PM || London, England
After about ten seconds of stunned silence, my father started to speak.
"Penny, it's okay, I know you're probably upset--"
"Upset?! Upset? You left me! You left mom! You left Robert! Upset doesn't even begin to cover it!" I yelled.
I felt my anger consume me. He thinks he can kidnap me in 1963, fucking twenty-some years before he left me. How did he even manage this? He thinks he can just show up and make it all better? Hell no. H-e-l-l NO.
"Now Penny, I know you're angry, but just let me explain," he started.
"No! You don't get to explain! I am stuck in 1963, I have better things to worry about than my 'daddy issues'. Let me go," I huffed.
"If you let me explain, I'll let you out of the car, deal?" my dad bargained.
I leaned back, crossed my arms, and stared out the window, "Go ahead."
"I didn't want to leave. You know that I work for the government. I was a part of a team that was supposed to make advances in space-time travel. The science division already made some breakthroughs in the realm of space travel, I guess you could call it teleportation. But we wanted to try and find a way to time travel. And as you must've figured out, I did. I realized that my superiors wanted to use this as a weapon, not for science. I couldn't let this tool become weaponized. So the night that I left, I took all of my work, and tried to escape." my father explained.
"You didn't take all of it. I found some of it behind your workbench a little while after you left. That's how I was able to build the Jump Reader." I mumbled.
"Ah, that explains it. Were you knocked out on the first trip? That can be a side effect of time travel. Sometimes I even get knocked out by the force of the Jump." he said.
"No, I got knocked off of my feet though," I remembered.
I'm so proud of you Penny. You always were very bright. You've grown up to be so pretty. How have your mom and brother been?" he asked.
"They're fine. We're poor, but we still live in the same house. Mom really just focuses on Robert, he's young, you know. But she tries really hard." I murmured.
I ran my hand through my hair, frustrated. Who is he to ask about my life? If he wanted to be involved, he shouldn't have left! I thought. I looked out the window to avoid eye contact with my father. "Can you please just explain, I don't want to talk about the collateral damage caused by you leaving," I huffed.
He frowned, but continued, "A couple of weeks later, the government caught me. As punishment, they made me test out the machine, and bring two government agents with me. The agents have a few different tasks to complete, that have already inevitably changed the future. Assassinations, relocations, I don't know, but they're making me take these agents where they need to go. The government locked my device, so that we can only travel back in time. There was no way I was going to be able to get back to you, without first travelling with these agents. It's been two years since I left, but I can see that it's been a bit longer than that for you."
"It's been five years. I'm seventeen--nearly eighteen--now." I sighed, "How did you find me?"
"It was luck, I think. I first saw you when The Beatles brought you from their recording studio. I got a job as a cab driver for The Beatles to pay the rent. The government agents I'm working with, are tracking someone. I don't know any other details, they haven't told me, but it's taking them a while. I needed to get a job in order to pay for food and rent, while they go off tearing apart the space-time continuum." my father sneered.
"So why did you bring me here?" I asked.
"Like I said before, I wasn't sure if it was you at first. But last night, I saw that you dropped this on the seat," he held up the Jump Reader.
"You had it this whole time! I've been scared out of my mind, and you had my way home!" I snatched the device from him and stuck it in my bag for safe keeping.
"Yes, but I was looking it over. It isn't locked, so we'll be able to go home. We can go back together!" he smiled.
Suddenly my anger flushed away, there was hope, I could get back home!
"You know how to change the time and the place? I've been trying to figure that out for ages!" I exclaimed.
"Yes! We can go home. It's simple really--" my father was cut off as the driver's side door was ripped open, and he was thrown from his seat. Two tall, dark, men were bustling around outside the car. I tried to escape, but the doors were still locked. The other agent busted the window and yanked me from the car. They dragged us into the building we were parked outside of.
I tried to scream, but the agent's gigantic hand covered my mouth. I spit in his hand and the man recoiled.
"Help!" I screamed, "Someone please, help--"
"Shut up, or I'll blow your brains out," the agent threatened as he shoved the barrel of his gun into the back of my head.
I became silent as he yanked us inside the building, and down a set of stairs. Now it seemed that I really was being kidnapped.
