As the song finished, Sonakshi was discomfited to find her head resting on Rehaan's broad shoulders; they were both unaware of how close they were standing-the song had transferred them both into an almost un-real world which just belonged to the two of them.
"I am sorry," she hesitated and adjusted her dupatta on her shoulders, "I should leave," she turned around to leave.
"Please don't go Samaira!" Rehaan said huskily.
Sonakshi startled at how he addressed her; she wanted to tell him who she really was, but could not muster the courage, "nahin....main chalti hoon....aap....aap se baad mein miloongi."
"Aap?" Rehaan chuckled, "Rehaan....call me Rehaan!"
Sonakshi was mortified; she could never address him by his name.....that would be too audacious for a girl like her.
"Yeh kaisi baat kar rahe hain aap?" Sonakshi lowered her eyes and ran away.
Rehaan followed her and grabbed the corner of her dupatta, "why do you shy so much? I want to get to know you Samaira.....you fascinate me......tum mein kuch aisi baat hai jo maineaaj tak kisi aur ladki mein nahin dekhi.....pata nahin kyon tumse milne ke baad main aur kisi se milna nahin chahta.......i can't get you out of my mind Samaira."
Sonakshi blushed profusely from head to toe; she was wordless and covered her face with her palms.....this was more than she could handle. She ran away as fast as she could, leaving her dupatta dangling in Rehaan's hands. Sonakshi did not notice her missing dupatta till she sat in the cab, "Hey Bhagwan! Ab main ghar aise kaise jaaoongi....aur wapas bhi nahin jaa sakti," she covered her dupatta-less shoulders with her arms and closed her eyes as the cab took her home.
Rehaan hung her dupatta around his neck and walked back to the hotel, "at this rate, I will have an impressive collection of dupattas myself!"
Sonakshi returned home and dashed for her room. Samaira was back home too, busy playing a game on her phone.
"Samaira....tu itni jaldi kaise aa gayi?" Sonakshi asked as she looked for another matching dupatta in her closet.
Samaira was fixated on her game and did not look up; she kept chewing her gum and then said, "abhi tak toh dil hi diya tha usey, aaj dupatta bhi de aayi?"
Sonakshi was stunned, "tujhey kaise pata?"
Samaira looked up and grinned, "Gotcha! I just guessed.....parr teri chori pakdi gayi Sonakshi madam," she got up and hugged her sister, "you are so gullible Sonakshi......tu mujhe kehti hai ki mere pait mein kuch baat nahin rehti, parr teri koi baat mujhsey chupi nahin rehti......now tell me more details.......did he kiss you?"
Sonakshi slapped Samaira's arm, "kitni besharam hai tu!! Aisa kuch nahin hai," she blushed at the thought of Rehaan kissing her, "bas saath saath gaana gaaya tha."
Innocent Sonakshi did not realize that clever Samaira was extracting more information from her than she would have liked to reveal.
"Wow! Gaana gaaya tha? Must have been some classical song?" Samaira teased her.
Sonakshi glared at her and threw her pillow on Samaira, "Nahin bhajan gaya tha!badmaash ladki......achha tareeka nikaala hai meri sab baatein pataa lagaane ka.....kuch nahin bataati ab...jaa yahan se."
Samaira ducked under the bed, "mamma! Bachao....mujhey Sonakshi se bachao!"
Asha came running in; she was used to these kinds of fights between the twins, but it was usually the other way round- Sonakshi calling for help, rather than the other way round.
She found Sonakshi standing with a pillow in her hands, ready to attack her sister.
"Sonakshi? Kya bachpana ho raha hai?" Asha asked.
Samaira jumped up, "mamma.....Sonakshi aapko kuch bataana chaahti hai," she gave a naughty look at Sonakshi.
Sonakshi was aghast, "mamma....yeh jhooth bol rahi hai."
Asha looked back and forth at her two daughters, "sach sach batao kya baat hai?"
"mamma...main bataati hoon," Samaira interjected, "Sonakshi shaadi karna chaahti hai!"
Sonakshi was astounded, 'mamma!mamma! yeh....yeh...sab jhooth hai mamma!"
Asha smiled, "chalo achha hua tumney apne mann ki baat Samaira ko keh di.....abhi abhi Ishwari ka phone aaya tha......wo chaahti hai tum aur Dev ek baar phir mil lo......wo sach much tumhey apni bahu banaa na chahhti hai Sonakshi....dekho ghar baithe baithe itna achha rishta aaya hai.....manaa mat karo.....aaj shaam ko unke ghar chalna hai.....dono tayyar ho jao aur ladai band karo....theek hai?" Asha left without giving them a choice.
Sonakshi clenched her teeth and was ready to pull Samaira's hair out, "Samaira ki bachhi! Kitni mushkil se uss Dev se peecha chudaaya tha.....ab phir wo chapter shuru kar diya!"
"Yeah right! I got rid of him! Tum toh apne loverboy ke saath thi tab!" Samaira retorted.
"You created this mess....now you will have to go with mamma papa tonight......main nahin jaaungi!" Sonakshi was adamant.
"Wow Sonakshi.....you have really changed.....kitni ziddi ho gayi hai! So defiant....almost like me," Samaira chuckled, "OK....but why has this Dev proposal come back again?"
"How do I know? Please Samaira...aaj saara kaam nibtaa karr hi aana.....please end this proposal once and for all...please meri pyaari behen......tujhey jo chaahiye main de doongi...OK?" Sonakshi pleaded.
Samaira thought for a while; she actually did not mind having fun with Mr Dev Dixit one more time- she loved challenges- and he was an easy prey!
"Theek hai Sonakshi....I will do it for you, but you owe me one...OK? When I need a favor later on, I will ask you...OK?" Samaira snapped her fingers.
Sonakshi smiled and hugged her sister, "what a sweetie pie! Jo tu maange gi...main de doongi....maang karr toh dekhna!"
Samaira hugged her back, "Sonakshi...never make promises you can't keep.......kahin maine kuch aisa maang liya jo tujhey bahut pyaari ho...tab kya karegi?"
Sonakshi kissed Samaira's cheek, "tujh se pyaari mujhey kuch cheez nahin hai....ab jaa aur tayyar ho ja....wo red waala suit pehen le......Dev lattoo ho jaayega tujh par," she chuckled
"Is that what you want? Dev to be lattoo on Sonakshi?" Samaira teased her
"Nahin...nahin," Sonakshi bit her tongue, "mera matlab yeh nahin tha.....kuch bhi pehen le.....waise bhi tujhpar sab achha lagta hai."
So Samaira, dressed up as a demure Sonakshi in a purple churidaar suit, accompanied her parents to the Dixit's house.
"Samaira nahin chal rahi?" Bijoy asked
"Nahin papa....uske sarr mein dard ho raha hai...wo ghar par hi rahegi," Samaira lied. Sonakshi, of course stayed home, lost in Rehaan's thoughts and dreams.
"saara waqt video games khelti rahegi toh sarr dard toh hoga hi!" Bijoy said angrily, "she needs to find a job or something now!"
"mamma...yeh bataiye.....yeh log phir se kyon milna chaahte hain? Samaira asked as they drove to the Dixit's.
"Sona.....tujhey bataaya tha na maine.....teri aur Dev ki horoscopes ke saare gun milte hain....iss liye Ishwari bahut peeche padi hain....parr hamari taraf se koi zabardasti nahin hai beta.....agar tujhey ladka pasand nahin hai, toh tu manaa karr dena...theek hai," Asha caressed Samaira's face affectionately.
Samaira, was of course unaware of this fact, "theek hai mamma...jaise aap sab theek samjhe," she said softly, just as her sister would have probably said.
AT THE DIXIT's:
Ishwari had made arrangements for a numerologist and an astrologer to be present at their meeting with the Bose's.
As soon as Dev walked in from work, Ishwari pounced on him, "beta...jaldi tayyar ho ja....koi milne aa raha hai tujhey."
"Kaun mom?" Dev asked obediently
"Wo yaad hai uss din Bijoy bhaisahab ki beti, Sonakshi ko dekhne gaye the? Wo log aa rahe hain," Ishwari sat down with Dev and helped him untie his shoe laces.
"Mom...aap yeh kya karr rahi hain?" he got up and sat at her feet, "aap mujhpar paap chadhaa rahi hain."
"Nahin beta....mujhey tera kaam karne mein khushi milti hai.....jab tak teri shaadi nahin hoti....main hi toh hoon teri chinta karne waali," Ishwari caressed her son's face.
"Mom....wo log phir kyon milna chaahte hain?" Dev shuddered at the thought of meeting the squint eyed, dare-devil again!
"Beta....Shastriji (their numerologist) ne kaha hai ki Sonakshi ka naam agar SSonakshi karr dein toh tumhari aur uski Jodi bahut theek baithegi.....aur Panditji (astrologer) keh rahe the ki uss din dasha theek nahin thi iss liye tum dono ne ek doosre ko pasand nahin kiya.....aaj bahut shubh ghadi hai....bas 6.35 parr tum SSonakshi se milna.....tab tum ek doosre ko pasand aa jaaoge...theek hai beta....ab jaa tayyar ho ja," Ishwari ordered.
Dev relented; he could never defy his mother. As he changed up into another three piece suit, he thought, "uss bhayankar ladki ko phir milna padhega aaj! Parr aaj main uske har sawaal ka mooh thod jawaab doonga......she thinks she is really smart.....I will teach her a lesson," he muttered to himself.
Samaira and her parents arrived at about 6 in the evening.
Ishwari and Jay greeted them at the door, "aayie...baithiye...arre SSonakshi beta bahut sunder lag rahi ho...uss din toh ghunghat main tumhey theek se dekha nahin tha.....nazar na lag jaaye beti ko...arre Panditji...isski nazar utaar deejiye.....aur aap," she looked at Jay, "Dev se kehna ki 6.34 se pehle neeche na aaye," she looked at her watch and mentally did some calculations.
Samaira was bewildered at Ishwari's obsession with astrology and her eccentricity regarding time...dasha.....janam patris. Her parents had never cared about these things, and she was really amused by it all.
Why was she emphasizing the 'SSS' in the name 'Sonakshi'? Kahin yeh Darr movie ki tarah KKKK..Kiran kehne waali psycho toh nahin hai? Samaira wondered. She noticed that Ishwari wore tons of necklaces, beads and rings on herself- yeh toh Ekta Kapoor ki bhi maa lagti hai! Samaira tried to suppress her laughter.
The Dixit's had a beautiful, well decorated two storey bungalow. Jay had, of course done well for himself careerwise, and Ishwari had hired the best Feng Shui experts to design their home. Even the furniture, vases, paintings had been all arranged according to Feng Shui!
Samaira was tempted to make some comment on Ishwari's quirks, but resisted as she knew her parents would never expect that from Sonakshi.
After Samaira had been thoroughly bored to death by Ishwari, Panditji and Shastriji's sermons about astrology, planets, Rahu-Ketus, dashas, stars, janam patris etc, she started tapping her feet in desperation.
"Kya hua beta?" Ishwari noticed Samaira's impatience, "bas Dev aata hi hoga," she looked at her watch, "bas 3 minute aur baaki hain."
Samaira was about to roll her eyes, but came to senses, "nahin aunty...wo bas mera pair so gaya tha," she said shyly.
Finally, Dev Dixit descended the stairs as the clock struck 6.35 and joined the guests in the living room. He could not help noticing that Sonakshi looked really attractive in the purple churidaar and SHE DID NOT HAVE A SQUINT! He was pleased to see that.
"Namaste aunty...uncle," he touched Bijoy and Asha's feet.
"Namaste SSonakshijee!" he folded his hands and lowered his eyes shyly.
"Namaste," Samaira looked at him in the face and winked at him. Dev was taken aback and almost fell down. He just bowed his head and sat down on the couch.
"beta....jao bahar garden mein chale jao tum dono," Ishwari ordered the youngsters.
"Theek hai mom," Dev said obediently.
Samaira thought, "what a mom's boy! How can a woman ever want to marry a guy like that? No identity of his own," she compared him to his younger brother, Prithvi. Prithvi was so cool and easy going, so unlike Dev, but she was glad he was not there today- Prithvi would have recognized her as Samaira for sure.
Dev led the way to their backyard, "would you care for something to drink?" he asked politely as Samaira settled in a lawn chair. Dev noticed a sudden change in Samaira's expression; she stretched her arms and placed her feet on the table, "I wouldn't mind a beer!"
He was shocked, "kya kaha aapne?"
Samaira glanced at him, "Beer? Beer nahin hai toh wine se kaam chalaa loongi main.....roz sham ko 6.41 baje mujhey alcohol ki craving hoti hai," she wrinkled her nose and shrugged her shoulders.
"Aap kaisi baatein karti hain SSonakshi jee?" Dev was mortified
"Pehle yeh batao....yeh mere naam ki taang kyon thod rahe ho tum aur tumhari mom?" Samaira asked.
"Well, Shastriji wants you to change your spelling," Dev lowered his head
"Who the hell is this Shastri fellow? He has no right to change my name," she snapped her fingers in front of him, "and neither do you mister!"
Dev was taken aback, "aap ladki hokar aise kaise baat karti hain?"
Samaira put her feet down on the grass and got up. She folded her arms and bent down close to his face, "aap ek 25 saal ke hatte katte mard hokar apni mom ka pallu kyon pakad ke chalte hain?"
"What do you mean? Meri mom ke baare mein aap kuch zyaada hi bolti jaa rahi hain," Dev was offended; he worshiped his mother like God and could not tolerate anyone making fun of her.
"Well Mr Dev.....don't you agree that your mom is a little over the top on certain things.....what is this nonsense we have to marry each other just because our janam patris match.....change my name....meet at this time, for heaven sakes, we live in the 21 st century!" Samaira fumed.
"SSonakshi jee.....please don't mind my mother's idiosyncrasies....she knows what is best for me......and I can never go against her.....so don't even try to change my mind about her......I would rather stay unmarried than disappoint my mom," Dev said firmly.
"Well....then keep looking for the perfect bride.....is duniya mein toh milegi nahin tumhe," Samaira replied.
"Why can't we talk like civilized people and try to get to know each other SSonakshi jee? agar panditji ne kaha hai ki hamare saare gun milte hain, toh unki baat maan ni chaahiye na humein?" he stood up and looked at her.
"Aap sab logon ki baatein maante hain kya?" Samaira asked
Dev lowered his head, "I like to see people happy SSonakshi jee."
Samaira rolled her tongue, "toh apni wife ki bhi harr baat maanenge?"
Dev turned red at that comment, "I..I...have not thought that far."
Samaira laughed, "Look at you sweating everywhere......ek baat batao.....why are you wearing this thick three piece suit in the middle of summer....and that too in your own home.....I think if you want to marry me, I have the right to at least see your body before that.....so when would you strip for me?"
Dev's eyes popped out of his head, "KITNI BADTAMEEZ AUR BESHARAM HAIN AAP? Please go away from here....I don't care if our janam patris match......I cannot marry a girl like you."
Samaira picked her bag from the table and winked at him, "aap mere kisi sawaal ka jawaab nahin dete......abhi tak uss din ke question ka answer bhi nahin diya......Good luck Mr Dixit.......aap galat century mein paida huye hain......I hope you find your 19th century bride soon...bye!" she blew a kiss at him and walked back into the house.
Dev turned red from anger and embarrassment- yeh ladki sunder toh bahut hai, parr mujhey kachha khaa jaayegi- he closed his eyes and sat down with his face buried in his hands. He got up after a few minutes, as he felt sweat beads rolling down his chest and back.
He got up and took off his jacket, loosened his tie and opened the top buttons of his shirt, "she was right.....why do I always have to wear a suit......may be mom will give me permission to wear casual sometimes."
Samaira and her parents left a few minutes later, without giving any hint on what Samaira thought about Dev.
"Theek hai Bijoy bhaisahab....kal phone parr baat karte hain," Ishwari said as she saw them off.
