Part Three
(Sans POV)
"Hey, don't know if you can hear me, but, erm, I'm good, ya know? I'm okay just...had a bad time. Heh, get it? No biggie. Besides, we've got a way to bring you back. Personally, I wouldn't want to miss that cuz kid...y o u ' v e g o t s o m e e x p l a i n i n g t o d o."
~~A shortcut later~~
"God damnit just...augh! I feel like an idiot. How the hell did I let this happen." I held their cold, lifeless body in my hands and sighed. "Welp, time to get to work. First things first, gotta make you habitable again...I...I can't believe I went so far." I used my magic to heal any damage I had done to them, so making the transition from soul to body would be, most likely, painless. "Next comes you bucko...and their magic to keep ya holdin' on. Feels comforting, doesn't it?"
"Mmmmn"
"C'mon kid, open your eyes."
"...sans?"
"I'm here buddy, I'm here."
"I-I'm so so-sorry...I didn't.....I didn't m-me-mean it. I-I didn't want to..."
I looked down at the kid, tears welling up in my eye sockets. "It's okay Frisk. You...you can cry. There's uh...no shame in it. You have every right." They dug their face into my neck and started sobbing.
"B-but...I, I n-need to..."
"Shh, no need to explain, I know. Just...trust me, okay?"
"Okay...*sniff* I, ggh *sniff*"
"Atta kid, just breathe. Look, I hate to ask this but...do you remember anything as a soul kid?"
"I-it's a l-little fuzzy, Sans...I-I think that s-someone else is h-here...! I'm scared."
I looked around quickly (hopefully) Frisk didn't notice. "There's no one here but us, baby bones...I don't sense anyone else..." The air was thick with fear and awkwardness. "But u-uh, if it's privacy you want, I think I might know a place we can go."
"What's 'privacy' mean?"
"Up we go..!" I lifted them up onto my shoulders, their hands on top of my head, and feet intertwined at my neck.
"B-but where are we g-going?" They gasped, "Wh-what if I'm s-seen?"
"Heh, no problem, I've got a short-cut."
I started teleporting back to Snowdin, Frisk tugged on my jacket slightly, and I looked back up at them.
"Where are we?"
"Well, I'm not special like you kid, I can't RESET but I can jump through the code...pretty difficult though..."
"So...we're teleporting? If that's true...can I ask you something?"
"Shoot kid."
"W-well, there's t-this place...and i-it really me-means a lot to me....and I have to finish something im-important there..."
"Hmmm..."
"Please? I have t-to do this."
"Where is it?"
They leaned in closer towards my ear and whispered, "W-well, you know that s-statue near waterfall?"
"Pfft! That place? Bwahaha! And I thought you were being serious!"
"I was being serious!"
"Oh well, if that's it...I guess we could make a pit stop there."
I outstretched my arm, using my magic to create a portal to the statue, but I forgot a really important detail...
"W-what are you doing? W-what's ha-happening? I-I....uh. . ."
I still had the kid with me.
As soon as the portal opened, Frisk leaped from my shoulders, and took off.
"H-hey kid! Hold up, wait!"
"N-no, j-just let me go! G-give me space!"
I sighed. "What did you see kid?"
"Nothing! I'll be right back!"
"...Oh. Oh, geez kid...I uh, didn't mean to scare you."
"N-no, it's fine, j-just let me go get it."
"'It'?"
As I waited for them, I kept wondering why this old thing was so important? It'd been here forever, wasn't anything special...so why the need to ACT here? I heard tiny footsteps coming my way, I turned and saw Frisk holding an umbrella.
"Huh? Whacha' got there kiddo?"
"S-something special."
They looked renewed, defiant almost? But, not at me.
(Play now)
Watching them smile up at the statue, listening to the soft music...wow. It made me realize how sweet their soul really was. That, they couldn't hurt anyone. They walked back to me after a few turns of the lever. I held their hand and started walking towards Snowdin.
"Kid, I've got to say...you made that statue really happy."
"He made me feel happy too...let's go...so where are we going?"
"Hehe, to Grillbyz, of course!"
"Really Sans, really?"
"Hey, when your town is evacuated, we'll eat where you want."
I teleported the rest of the way to Snowdin, when we got there, Snowdin was living up to it's name. It was cold, windy, and snowy. Frisk started shivering after a few minutes.
"I-it's a b-bit cold...is it a-always this windy?"
"We're almost there, just stick it out a little longer, okay?"
When we got into Grillbyz, it was still cold, but not as bad as it was outside.
"There, that wasn't so bad now was it? Though, I can't say much since I'm a skeleton."
Frisk huffed before saying, "I wish I had brought my big coat."
"Heh, yeah, that'd been a good idea...man, this place feels weird without everything here, it almost feels, wrong. Well, works in our favour doesn't it...sorta? Anyway..." I started walking to the bar, Frisk was still at the couches. "Heh, ya comin' ya slow poke? Or am I gonna have to carry you there?"
"I was only looking around! I can walk by myself you know? But I appreciate the offer anyways..."
We got to the bar, I helped Frisk get situated before starting.
"Alright, we're gonna take this nice and slow, okay?"
"O-okay, I think I can do that..."
"So...how old are you Frisk?"
"I'm seven and a quarter..."
"S-seven?! Erm...Wow k-kid, you're old!"
While I joked, I was trying not to think 'holy shit! I murdered a seven-year-old twice!'. Obviously I failed, badly. But, the more I thought about it, the more I realised, that I not only used my full power, but I also used the souls power...on a goddamn innocent baby.
The kid looked up at me, "...Sans? Are you alright?"
In the heat of the moment, I'm not sure what came over me. I can't think of the last time I felt so goddamn weak. I could have known. I could have known. But...I didn't.
"Sans? Do you have a tummy-ache?"
It's funny how one innocent question...could make me grin like an idiot.
"Oh my god kid...bwahaha! You have no idea kid, you seriously don't!"
"...Clearly."
There was no way around it now, I had to ask them.
"Putting that aside...how did you get mixed up with the deamon and the talking flower? If you don't mind me asking."
The kid started shaking, hands gripping the bar table. "Kid?"
"I was s-so stupid...!" They started crying, but they wiped their face and kept going. "When I fell, I-I just...I was so scared...I had only heard of this place in bedtime stories. They told stories of monsters 'under the bed' meaning underground, but then I met Flowey, and he was so nice and friendly...I guess it's kinda weird, but a talking flower made me feel better. So, when he asked me for a favour...I wanted to help. I-I still can't..."
"Take your time kid."
"He...he said that his friend fell too, and that they wanted to go home. He asked me...he wanted me to take her with me...so she could die in a garden. I was sad for her, so I agreed...b-but it was... A LIE. I-I can't th-think of the l-last time I-I was h-hurting so bad. I-it felt l-like I w-was on fire...like my insides w-were melting, I w-wanted to throw up...b-but I-I didn't have a-any control. The last th-thing I did was open m-my eyes wide e-enough wh-when I s-screamed...I can't b-believe I k-k-killed all of th-those s-sweet, m-monsters...I c-couldn't m-move or s-scream. I-I couldn't s-stop her. And I-I saw that scared look in their eyes...th-the s-same fear I had...a-an idiot..." I looked at Frisk with shock and regret seeping through my eyes...I couldn't, no, I wouldn't allow them to hurt any more...but they had one more surprise..."Heh, you *sniff* were right...kids like me sh-should...be burning in hell."
I shook my head and started walking towards the stereo. "If kids like you are burning in hell...then big-boned guys like me better damn well make sure that you're burning nothing but marshmallows. Heh, and don't get burned out while you're at it. Kid, let's be honest here, there's no feasible way I can make everything back to normal, but, I noticed that...you like music. I saw your face at the statue. So...maybe I can make up for what I've done? To write over a bad SAVE with a good. So...let's just forget about our hell right now, kid..." I lifted Frisk from the stool and lifter her up in the air, the sat her down. "Here we go!"
We started dancing to the music, slowly.
'Let's go in the garden, you'll find something waiting, right where you left it lying upside down,
When you finally find it, you'll see how it's faded,
The underside is lighter when you turn it around,
Everything stays, right where you left it,
Everything stays, but it still changes,
Ever so slightly, daily and nightly,
In little ways, when everything stays.'
They started crying tears of joy when they looked up at me again. I looked down at them with the same happiness in my eyes, when a screen popped up in front of the kid. 'FORGIVE' 'DO NOT' was what they said, and I put my hand in front of it.
"You don't have to decide right now."
"Isn't that what you wanted though?"
"Of course, but these things take time, and you haven't really had time to heal, I want you to feel more at ease before deciding on anything." I put my hand on the buttons. "So let's just put this away for now, ok-" I was cut off by a wave of painful electricity flowing through my body, shooting me backwards.
"Sans?! Are you okay? Please..."
"Heh, kid, it just...startled me, that's right. We can't, uh, make your choices for you."
"We? Sans...there's something under your shirt..." They saw my magic stomach...I had to get them distracted.
"Don't bother with it." They were getting closer to removing my jacket from covering the souls. "I'm warning you now kid, you're not gonna like it..." It was too late, they were already lifting up my jacket. "I s a i d s t o p." I flipped over onto my back, but, my stomach was already exposed. Their eyes widened, and they gasped.
"The s-souls! Wh-what did...Sans, I can't even...why? Th-their souls.."
"Kid, listen I-"
"...are you going to eat me to Sans?"
"Pfft, after what you did the first time? I don't think so...why? You offering?" My eye lit up with a soft cyan blue glow, Frisk was already scared, and I think I just fuelled the fire. "U-uh that's a joke" I don't think they took it as a joke.
"So...all the stories were true...about the monsters underground that would eat us...I-I can't, I won't."
"W-wait...just let me explain okay? Just hold up..." But they were already sprinting out the door and into the snow storm. "WAIT! FRISK!"
