twenty-two

Changbin stared at Han, unable to process his words.

"What?"

"I'm not coming with you. I need to find him."

"Han, get your ass over here, we'll look for him when we get to the control room. Don't be a fucking idiot!" Changbin hissed, not wanting to raise his voice in fear of the zombies.

"If I die, I fucking deserve it. I just-I can't do nothing!" his voice rose to a shout, startling both of them.

It rang throughout the empty hall.

"I-I'm sorry-I didn't mean to-I have to-I have to find him..."

With that, Han took off running.

Changbin wanted to scream out his name, to tell him to stop. But he couldn't. Not without putting him in more danger. His eyes filled with tears.

"Bin, they're coming. Bin!"

Changbin felt a tug on his arm as Felix pointed ahead at a mass of zombies. But all Changbin saw were the tears on Felix's cheeks. The pain in his expression.

He wanted to run after Jisung just as much as he did.

But they both knew they had a mission.

They had to get Yeosang to the south control room. And Han was heading into a suicide mission.

They couldn't stop him.

They probably wouldn't ever see him again.

Felix let out a quiet sob, trying not to make more noise. Changbin wiped his eyes and bent over, offering Felix his back.

"Then we need to get going."

Felix hesitated but knew better than to fight Changbin. He was too stubborn for his own good.

"We...we need to go," Yeosang whispered, unsure how to approach the other two given the recent turn of events.

Changbin nodded, adjusting Felix on his back. Felix gripped his neck tightly but made sure not to put pressure on his trachea. He wrapped his legs around Changbin's waist, hoping to at least be able to stay on Changbin's back.

It was the only thing he could do to help.

Yeosang nodded, gripping his mop tightly. Changbin could see the fear in his eyes.

They all knew Changbin was the only one who could get them out of this alive.

It was all on him.

And if it came down to it...

If he had to choose between Felix and Yeosang...

He didn't know if he could be objective.

But if he didn't get Yeosang to safety...he could never face the other five.

But now with losing Han and the uncertainty of the situation for the other members, Felix was all he had left. He wasn't ready to go. Not yet.

But Yeosang stepped forward, jabbing into the mass. Changbin didn't hesitate, following suit as he swung a large metal case back and forth, clearing a path forward.

Once they'd pushed back enough of the zombies to have room to slip by close to the wall, Changbin grabbed Yeosang by the shirt and dragged him along as he sprinted through.

As they made it past the first group, they spread back out across the hall, maintaining a full sprint.

"Why the hell are there so many of them?! I thought the attack team was supposed to take care of at least a few!" Yeosang cried, looking over his shoulder.

Changbin wasn't really in a place to respond at the moment. Not with everything running through his head.

Han.

And now...

They might not even be running towards anyone.

"Wait you don't-you don't think-"

Yeosang stared at him in horror.

"I don't know! We just have to keep going!" Changbin grunted, pausing just a moment to hoist Felix higher up on his back.

"I'm sure they're fine. Some door must have opened up along the way. They're probably taking cover somewhere," Felix reassured him, and Yeosang nodded.

"We just need to get as close as we can, then we'll find somewhere to stop," Felix said softly.

"No, we need to get to the control room!" Changbin shouted as he gathered his strength, preparing for the incoming mob of zombies ahead of them.

"Bin, there's too many. We can't get through!"

"We have to."

Yeosang looked at the two anxiously, not sure what to do.

"Bin, let's just get to the storage room up there, okay? Then we can take cover and let you rest-"

"I'm fine! We don't know if it'll be safe in there anyways!"

"It's a way better bet than staying in the hallway!"

"Felix, you don't have to worry about me. I can do this."

"I know. But you don't have to."

"We have to get Yeosang to the others. That's our job. I won't let him be left behind."

Felix wanted to protest but he saw that arguing was just wasting Changbin's energy so he resigned, trying to keep himself out of his way.

Yeosang gripped his mop, driving forward as Changbin swung the dented metal case. They forced their way into the mob, pushing them back as they travelled forward through the hallway.

Felix could feel the sweat running down Changbin's back. Could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Could feel the rapid breaths as he pushed himself.

He couldn't maintain this.

Not long enough to get to the control room.

There had been too many zombies. They weren't expecting such a fight. And they weren't expecting to be short a fighter.

Yeosang was a big help but Changbin's wide swings were doing most of the work. He was burning himself out.

If he didn't stop...

Changbin paused a moment as Yeosang filled in, jabbing forward at the snarling group before them. Changbin bent over, calming his breathing and wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. But one of the zombies on the far side of the hallway snuck past Yeosang's limited reach, heading right for him.

"BIN!" Felix screamed, throwing his body weight to the side as the zombie hurtled towards them.

A moment after he'd leaned, he felt his stomach sink as Changbin lost his balance and they went crashing down onto the floor. Changbin's arms tried their best to push Felix off his back before he got caught under him but his ankle was crushed under Changbin's side. Felix screamed in pain, feeling the injury flare up worse than it had ever felt before.

Yeosang stared back in terror, not knowing what to do.

"FUCK! FELIX! I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY! ARE YOU OKAY?? I SHOULDN'T HAVE STOPPED I'M SORRY!"

Felix tried to tell him it was okay but he couldn't talk without crying.

Changbin looked so fucking worried.

He'd tried to help just this once and now Changbin wasn't even paying attention.

"GO!" he screamed with every ounce of force he could muster and Changbin flinched back, eyes wide.

"No! I'm not-just get on my back-"

"GO! YEOSANG NEEDS HELP!"

Changbin hesitated-just for a moment as his eyes lingered on Felix's injured form-before nodding, grabbing his case and quickly knocking away the zombies that had tried to take advantage of Yeosang's distracted state.

Felix knew he had to get out of the hallway on his own, but wasn't sure how. He pulled his bad leg closer, biting his lip as his ankle throbbed. Once he'd gotten it close enough to put his weight on it, he eased forward testing it out.

Immediately, sparks of white flashed through his vision as he fell backwards in pain. His head slammed against the ground and he cried out.

Changbin turned, his worried eyes running over Felix once again.

But Felix shook it off, wiping the tears from his cheeks. The zombies they'd outrun from before would catch up any minute. He needed to get to the wall so he had enough leverage to stand on his good leg, then he could hobble into the supply closet next to it.

Taking his good leg, he pushed his heel into the ground, shoving his way backwards towards the wall, making meager progress. He began adding in the palms of his hands, scraping them on the hard tiled surface. With every ounce of strength he had, his functioning limbs pushed, working his way over to the edge of the hallway.

Finally, he felt the cool structure collide with his back and he smiled, reaching up for the door handle on the closet.

"FELIX!!!"

He turned towards Changbin in alarm.

But it was the wrong way.

The zombies had caught up.

And they were behind him.
