Chiharu's emerald eyes widened at the cupcakes that sat proudly on display of a quaint cafe on her way home. Her brain screamed at her to move already! Papa is going to worry but they all fell deaf on her ears. They were like that of jewels. Some were vanilla whereas others were chocolate and as far as frosting went, there was a diverse range of colours from a sky blue to a black and white ripple with different decorations from sprinkles to small Easter eggs. Simply fit for a queen. 'I should definitely try and recreate some of these.'

A hand gripped her wrist and promptly tugged her away from the cafe effectively turning her attention to reality. Her twin brother pouted and whined that she could've been taken away by a scary stranger but at the moment, she could've cared less.

"Hey Yoshi, let's surprise momma and papa with some cupcakes. I think they're coming home late again" She proposed as she retied her left pigtail. Yoshiki hummed in affirmation while they turned a corner avoiding bumping into people as it was a warm Wednesday afternoon. Walking home from school was a normal occurrence that made them think they were both adults but seeing so many people going about their day made Yoshiki quite nervous. His energy was slowly getting drained like water out of a bathtub which made talking to people an exhausting task. He couldn't help but wonder how his sister can effortlessly talk to tons of people. It still remains a mystery. A mystery that will probably remain a cold case.

"What if we make a huge mess? We'll get grounded." Chiharu gave him a knowing look simply replying with "Then let's not make a mess then simple right?" Mischief glossed over her eyes along with a soft giggle. The sound of cars honking contributed to song of the outside world. The other sounds; people conversing amongst themselves, shoes hitting the pavement, the light breeze of the wind, the faint ding of a bell created a white noise that kept them walking as fast as they could.

2 relaxing hours later, the twins finally made it back home. Yoshiki was so close to the television screen you would've thought his eyes were making contact with it and Chiharu was in the room brushing her hair. Hey, if she's going to cook might as well look good while doing it. Tying her soft black hair into a high bun, she grabbed her frilly pink polkadot apron and skipped towards the kitchen a cookbook on the counter. Flipping through the pages, tons of mouth-watering dishes were printed for all to see, they looked magnificent. Fit for royalty.

"Yoshiki, we're starting. Put your apron on." He stood up turning the television off taking the forest green apron off its peg. Admittedly a weird colour but she wasn't about to judge.

"Read through this then get these ingredients." Yoshiki nodded as he did as he was told. Chiharu walked around from cabinet to cabinet, the pile of ingredients rapidly growing in size from vanilla to flour. "Okay so vanilla, flour, butter..."

"Chiharu should I get the stepstool?" Chiharu hummed in response and with that, he ran up the stairs and to the small bathroom. Sliding the show curtain to the side, he found a small blue step stool with three steps. Stool in hand, he walked back down the stairs and put it down below the cabinet stepping on it reaching the top shelf filled with bowls with a variety of sizes and transparency. "Chiharu a little help here?!" His voice was strained, his toes and arms ached with each attempt to reach up. Putting the milk on the counter, she climbed up grabbing the bowls with ease. "See it's easy." Her feet were on the edge and something must've snapped in Yoshiki's 7 year old brain because what happened next happened far too quickly.

"Chi back up!" He screeched, stepping off the stool standing behind her ready to catch her. Everything moved in slow motion. The elder twin fell backwards into her brother's arms, stumbling backwards coming into contact with the counter behind him. Thankfully his sister wasn't in harm's way anymore but the glass bowl that was in her arms suffered a different fate. After checking over his sister, their eyes slowly turned to the mess in front of them that was originally a bowl. Yoshiki's blood ran cold, his heart rate going through the roof. The thought of getting in huge trouble was at the forefront of his head. He ran to the closet first bumping into the door before ripping it open taking the broom and dustpan. "H-hold this I'll sweep."

His hands shook like that of a jackhammer, he could barely sweep. The thought of getting cut by the glass petrified him. While he swept the glass onto the dustpan, his eyes were glued to the door waiting for mom and dad to come home to the mess in front of them. "What in the world happened here?!" Is what they're going to ask and the next thing he'll know, they're going to have more on their plate. He soon stood up grabbing a garbage bag and the glass slid into the bag. "What time is it?" he asked, hiding the bag in the cabinet. "It's 4." she replied looking up at the alarm clock beside the television, sweeping any residual glass away.

The sound of the phone ringing alerted Chiharu's senses. She ran to the phone thinking it was probably momma. "Hello?"

The voice of her father made her eyes twinkle in happiness. "Hey papa. When are you and momma coming home?" She asked putting her right hand out, flexing her index finger telling her brother to come over here. "...We'll try to come home soon. Are you two okay alone?"

"Yeah we're okay." Yoshiki excitedly yanked the phone out of his sister's hand. "How's momma?" He asked not making any sort of effort to hide his excitement.

"He's..." Looking at his lover slumped over the desk quietly groaning. It looked like his soul escaped his body which probably contributed to his sickly pale complexion. "Okay though he is very tired." It was a half truth. He once again just barely made the deadline for his new chapter. "Can we talk to him? Can we?!"

The line went silent except for muffled mumbling on the other line. Chiharu yanked the phone out of her brother's hand, said brother pouted and crossed his arms like a 4 year old. The worn out voice of Yoshino Chiaki made a huge dopey grin to make its way onto her face. She moved the phone so both she and her brother can speak. "Hello?"

"Hi momma!" Chiharu squeaked. It was followed with "What're you doing right now? Are you drawing?! I bet it's something girly." His face scrunched up at the mention of a shoujo manga. Yoshino chuckled at the disgust of the manga he's currently working on.

"Yeah. Just finished we're going home soon. Hang in there."

"By the way I always wanted to know. Why do you draw shoujo manga if you're a guy?" Yoshiki asked.

"It's something I like to do. It doesn't matter if I am a guy. If I was a girl I would still be here would I?" He was prepared for such a question. Heck! back when he first started, he asked himself the same thing. Now that he's a successful mangaka, it doesn't matter.

"Make sure you both are in bed by 10 okay?" They hum in response having complete opposite intentions. Saying their goodbyes, they run back to the kitchen going back to what they were originally doing.

Chiharu stood back on the counter this time, slowing down making sure no bowls suffered the same fate as the last one. Taking one bowl at a time and handing it to her brother, he starts measuring out the dry ingredients. "Once I'm done measuring the wet ingredients, We'll put them together." She instructed as she beat 2 large eggs like making scrambled eggs and put them into the second large bowl.

Opening the cap of vanilla, the scent caused her to take another whiff smiling like she was in the most beautiful botanical garden in the world. With a twinkle in her eyes, she thrusted the bottle into her brother's face exclaiming "Yoshiki come smell this. It's so good!" She dragged out the 'so'. Yoshiki took a whiff of the vanilla and the same sparkle showed in his eyes. "Wow! This is the best thing ever! Let's ask papa if we can have more vanilla scented things!" His sister hummed as she plopped a couple teaspoons for the signature vanilla flavour.

"What colour should we make the frosting?" Yoshiki asked, folding in the wet ingredients into the dry with a spatula. "Mine should be pink and yours can be green. Momma's should be purple and Papa's should be blue."

"Papa's should be red." And that was the catalyst for another petty sibling fight.

Chiharu made a disgusted face at the statement "Ugh that's not a good idea. Believe me. Blue will bring out papa's eyes. Cupcakes need to look good."

"No ones going to care about the colour of the frosting. The only thing that matters is the taste." Yoshiki rolled his eyes at his sister's obsession with aesthetics.

"But they aren't going to eat them if they look bad then our work will be a waste of time!"

"Who cares!"

"Then why did you ask?!"

With each passing second, their petty argument soon turned into a screaming match going back and forth between aesthetically pleasing confections and mediocre but scrumptious. Absolutely no in between.

"Okay fine! Let's just do rock paper scissors. Winner gets to decorate mom and papa's cupcakes." Her left hand turned into a fist hovering hovering over her cupped right hand, her eyebrows furrowed in determination.

"Rock paper scissors shoot!" Their fists unfurled. Yoshiki knew Chiharu wasn't exactly that good at playing the game (she always picked paper) and with that, his fist unfurled into scissors moving his finger in a scissor-like motion. Yoshiki pumped his fist in victory whereas his sister pouted and pushed him aside mumbling "Let's just continue."

Within the span of an hour, the cake batter had been completed and the molds had been filled, putting them into the hot oven. Reading the recipe over once again, an idea had struck Chiharu like a lightning bolt. "Let's wait for them to come home and we can all decorate the cupcakes like we did in school!" Jokingly putting a hand on his chin, Yoshiki ruffled her hair as a way of agreement. While the cupcakes baked, the twins eyes were glued to the cartoon displayed on the television. The smell of vanilla waft from the oven diffusing into the living room contributing to the homely aura around them.

At around 9pm, the sound of a key entering the keyhole caused Yoshiki to immediately turn off the television and run to the door like a puppy waiting for its master. Surely enough, both parents tiredly entered the house and was glomped by their son screaming "Your home!"

Hatori's eye darted towards the kitchen, some residual batter was splattered onto the counter along with Yoshiki's floury hands causing some red flags to start firing off. "Why is there flour on your hands?" "And why does the house smell like vanilla?" Yoshino finished with equal confusion. Chiharu took his hand leading him to the oven. "We wanted to surprise you and papa. I saw some cupcakes while walking home and wanted to make these."

"...That's really sweet of you both" Was all Yoshino could mutter

"Go clean up, we're going to frost them together soon." Yoshiki pushed them out of the kitchen and started cleaning the counter with paper towels. Yoshino watched their kids from afar cleaning and cooking in unison. "They look so..tasty." He whispered

"I'm surprised they haven't burned anything."

"Look! They're so in sync." Yoshino's voice was just a whisper

"You know we can see you right?" The elder twin rolled her eyes at their father's little comments. "Y-yeah it's just a pleasant surprise to see. Usually you and Chiharu both fight about this or that. It's nice to see you both working together." Speaking of surprises.

"Hey momma I have to show you something!" Yoshiki grinned like the cheshire cat running upstairs to the bedroom fishing out his art piece from his bag and ran down the stairs. Thrusting the art piece into his mother's face, confusion soon turned to appreciation. What was shoved in his face? A portrait of him pointing at a blue jay and Yoshiki with a pad and pencil sketching out the animals, both with soft, satisfied expressions on their faces. For a 7 year old, it was quite an impressive piece of work. "Wow! This has to be hung above my desk!" Yoshino ruffled his son's hair with a proud smile on his face. "Can you sign my name on it like how you do it? I can't do it." Putting his art on the counter, he took out his black pen out of his back pocket handwriting his son's name on the bottom right hand corner with a smiley face. Satisfied with the signature, Yoshiki gave him a hug with a toothy grin.

"You're really going to hang it above your desk?" He asked with enthusiasm. His mother hummed in affirmation

Grabbing her bag, Chiharu fished out her recorder running back to her father. "Papa can you help me with my new recorder? It sounds really weird."

"Are you covering all the holes?" Hatori suggested

Holding the recorder, his hands moved his daughter's fingers onto the first three holes. "Now blow." Doing what she was instructed, Chiharu softly blew into the instrument, a smooth 'G' note blew out one end and out the other for 3 seconds. She turned to her father hugging him before running to the couch to practice some more.

"Chi." Yoshiki whined and stomped his foot dramatically dragging out the 'i'. "When do the cupcakes finish baking?"

"Momma where are the toothpicks? I want to try a new thing I learned today."

Yoshino looked at his daughter in confusion before looking at his lover, his gaze asking him the exact same question. His lover had more knowledge of his kitchen than him. He opened the cabinet reaching up to the second shelf taking out the toothpick, the wooden sticks shaking in its confines with even the slightest movement. Raising an eyebrow formed the question 'What are you planning to do with those?' It was a speciality of Hatori's, either using his body language or a single word to ask entire questions.

Following Chiharu to the oven, she put on the oversized flower oven mitt and opened the machine heat rushed out giving her a makeshift facial. She pulled the cupcakes towards her and they looked absolutely scrumptious. Pulling a toothpick out with her right hand, inserting it inside the confection for 2 seconds before pulling it out. No raw cupcake batter stuck to the toothpick indicating they're ready to be frosted. Turning off the oven, the cupcakes came out. They were like edible jewels on a queen's crown. White with some crumbs cascading down to the bottom of the pan . They look amazing, and would look even better with frosting. Yoshiki, with stars in his eyes exclaimed "Wow! They're perfect!"

"I'm going to take a bath. Yoshiki put those in the fridge would ya?" Her voice echoed off the walls as she walked up the stairs and into the bathroom. She knelt down to open the cabinet taking out a brown plug before turning on the tap, adjusting the water temperature when needed. Once the water was at the optimal temperature, she put the plug in the hole, effectively trapping the water inside.

With Yoshiki

"Did you finish your homework Yoshiki?" Hatori asked as Yoshiki nodded his head replying "The teacher gave us math homework. Oh and we have to read a book. Kind of wish it was the Kan instead." Opening the fridge, he took the pan of cupcakes which had slightly cooled down and slid them in. Taking a seat on the couch, his gaze turned to his father in the kitchen, besides the fact they came home exhausted he looked rather normal except with the black rings that contrasted his eyelids.

"Papa why are there black things under your eyes?" He cried out "Are you sick?! You should lie down-"

"I'm not sick, don't worry." He cut him off and looked up at him, his expression remaining the same. "These come up when you don't get enough sleep. That's why we tell you to sleep earl-" During his explanation, he quickly grabbed his small sketchbook drawing his father.

"Keep working." His attention turned to the blank page his wrist and fingers worked together to form a prototype for his next sketch occasionally turning to look at his muse like a mirror. The atmosphere turned tranquil, the occasional slosh of frosting broke the silence as Yoshiki's eyebrows furrowed with concentration, angeling the paper to the right to work on drawing his fingers. (well, attempting to)

"Momma I need help." Yoshino looked up from his manga. "I can't draw fingers." He said as he erased them for the fifth time. Giving him the sheet of paper and pencil, Yoshino started working his magic. Drawing the fingers like no one's business. "How do you draw those so easily?" He inquired, staring at digits in awe at how realistic they looked. "You just need to practice. It isn't that hard to draw. Use this as your muse and try drawing hands." Nodding his head, he immediately turned back to his sketch, starting on the actual eyes, shading the lids with the pencil at an angle. It wasn't at his father's level of elegance but it wasn't half bad but then again, he wasn't professional in any sense of the word.

"What colour should the frosting be?"

"I want mine to be green, Chi wants her to be pink and I'm decorating your cupcakes!" He happily announces not skipping a beat. With a chuckle, his mother gently nudged his shoulder asking him to make his frosting blue. Nodding his head, he proceeds to ask his father what colour he wants.

"I'll keep mine white."

"C'mon Tori, that's plain. Your's should be blue. It would look really good" Chiaki whined. Like mother, like son. It's almost like they're biological.

"The food colouring will cause an unnecessary mess.". The younger twin nudged his mother's shoulder telling him 'I have a plan' with the motion. Looking at his son with confusion, he sauntered towards his father attempting to push him out with the excuse "You seem tired, go sit down. I can take over from here." But of course, he saw right through it. "You aren't fooling anyone you know?"

Cutting to the chase, Yoshiki turned up the charm. "But papa! You would be left out." He stuck his bottom lip out pouting. "Plus mommy agrees with me. Me and Chi spent so much time planning these cupcakes. Are you really going to ruin it?" The high-pitched voice caused Hatori to go through a mental battle. Yes they put all that time and energy to bake these but the unnecessary mess that the food colouring can and will cause is a big inconvenience. But the sight of his son pouting, his bottom lip and his doe-like emerald eyes caused him to cave.

"...Okay fine go ahead." He sighed deeply, rubbing his eyes with his thumb and index finger in an attempt to hide a smile that threatened to make itself known. 'I should thank Chiharu for the cute look.' He pumped his fist in victory hugging his father's arm and opening the fridge taking out the culinary confections to decorate. "Can you get 4 bowls and those food coloring tubes?" Folding the frosting to prevent it from liquefying, Yoshiki's father opened the cabinet taking out 4 small glass bowls. Pouring equal amounts of the sugary white substance into each bowl. "I'll put the food coloring in." He felt a hand on his shoulder. "How about you get your sister." Nodding his head, and with that he was gone in a second.

"Yoshiki really takes after you. I would not be surprised if he was a clone." His face remained straight at his little joke. Yoshino looked up from his manga rolling his eyes at his supposed joke.

"And Chiharu is a female version of you. Just more argumentative." Chiaki retorted. "It seems you're more laid back when you're with Chiharu don't you think Tori?"

"I...suppose. She seems to take a lot after me."

"Huh? Tori? Since when is papa a *bird*?" Chiharu blurted out, blowing her cover up the stairs. Chiaki chuckled at the translation and the thought of him as a bird. "No no that's just a nickname. He's not a bird though that's pretty funny."

Yoshiki popped up behind his sister singing "Tori the bird tweet tweet tweet!" Chiharu soon joined in, tapping out a beat on the railing. Chiaki fished out his phone pressing the camera app and pressed record documenting the hilarity in front of him though he absolutely didn't look amused at all. "Oi shut that off Yoshino." He walked up to the boy with the phone to shut it off, but of course that doesn't work.

"Yuu has to see this." He giggled sending the video to the aforementioned friend. 'It's like taking care of 3 kids instead of 2.' The thought stuck with him for a moment as he stared at his hyperactive lover. What he was about to do was risky but for the first time, he was thinking with his lips instead of his brain. Picking up the manga off the floor, he positioned it so their kiss remained hidden. While Chiaki happily tapped at the screen, the sensation of supple lips on his own caused him to freeze up in shock and dropped his phone with a dull thud. Chiaki's blue eyes widened at the sensation and the spontaneity of this display of affection. No warning. No way of knowing. His eyes soon fluttered close and started returning the kiss, their hands on top of the other exchanging their passion.

Only when oxygen became scarce, their lips disconnected, the editor slowly lowering the manga both panting lightly.

Once Chiaki noticed his manga and his phone on the floor, everything soon clicked in his head. "Are you crazy Tori?! Yoshiki and Chiharu could've been watching!" He yelled. "You..you were trying to hypnotize me?!"

"So are you saying my kisses hypnotize you?" His accusation soon turned against him. Another specialty of Hatori. He somehow mastered the ability to turn the blue eyed boy's accusations against him. With a scarlet face, Chiaki turned away from the editor in an effort of denying said question. "Delete that video Chiaki?" His deep voice

"So..." He huffed, annoyance laced in his voice. "You did all that because of a harmless video? It's hilarious! Did you even see them? It's just kids being kids."

"You would not be saying that if that song was about you." He said

"Papa! Momma! Let's frost the cupcakes already!" Chiharu tugged at her father's sleeve jumping like she just ate a bunch of raw sugar. Meanwhile, the younger twin hadn't even bothered waiting for the rest and started applying the frosting with a spatula. "Oi Yoshiki! Can't you wait?" She ran to the kitchen taking the spatula out of his hands dipping it into the light pink sugary substance. Gripping his sister's wrist he exclaimed "Chi you're ruining it! Let me finish."

"Hey you finished yours, let me start my first one!" She yelled.

Sensing a fight brewing on the horizon and it was going to be a fierce one. Walking up to the arguing twins, he opened a shelf taking out another spatula handing it to his daughter saying absolutely nothing and they continued frosting in peace putting each of them on small plates.

"Guys, come decorate your cupcakes!" Their daughter held an unfrosted cupcake trying to get them to join in the fun activity. "Hey I'm decorating them. Let them relax." He turned to his parents. "Just relax."

10 minutes had passed and all eight cupcakes were frosted and ready to be consumed. The family were all on the couch happily eating the fruits of the twins labor. A little over baked but that was insignificant with the vanilla along with the sweetness of the frosting was heaven for the tastebuds. Chiaki's eyes widened like that of a child the moment his teeth sunk into the confection. "

"It's a little too sweet for my taste but I'm impressed with what you guys made." The editor hummed when he first bit into it. "You really like it?!" Chiharu exclaimed. A soft smile broke loose on the editors lips. These kids..though they argue day in and day out, he and Chiaki can confidently say; they wouldn't trade them for the world.
