Chapter 1

Hello! My name is Winter and I'm sixteen years old. I have dazzling blue eyes and unusually white hair. I live in a small town that is not really know to outsiders. I go to a regular school have a few friends and spend most of my time with the animals on my Aunt's farm. I don't have any parents or siblings so i live with my Aunt and Uncle. We all get along with each other so there are never any fights. I'm happy here in this tiny place but, sometimes I wish i could go on some great adventure.

I poured the buck of slosh into the pig pen. All the pigs squealed and rushed over to eat. I smiled and turned back to the barn. I went inside, grabbed some hay and went to the cow stalls. I lifted it up over the fence and dropped it inside. The cows nibbled lazily on it as i pet there heads. Then i grabbed a sack of chicken feed and left the barn in the direction of the chicken coop.

When i got there all he chickens were still inside the coop. I clicked my tongue as i sprinkled the feed on the ground. They all rushed out, squawking like the their house was on fire. Then they started pecking the ground. I held my hand out to one that was smaller and couldn't get any because of the bigger ones. It walked slowly over to me amd pecked at the seeds in my hand. I smiled.

Suddenly i heard a voice behind me. "Your the only person in town that can feed any of the animals on a farm without getting your hand bitten off." I smiled as i relaxed and turned around to face my Aunt. She was grinning.

"Good morning, Aunt Maddy. Did you sleep well?" I asked.

She smiled bigger and nodded. "Quite. Thank you. I had a dream about a little girl with blue eyes and odd white hair. She was so beautiful and nice everyone loved her dearly!"

I giggled, knowing she was talking about me. "Really? Well i had a dream about an Aunt that was so kind hearted and was always the center of attention."

"Hey! What about me?" I glanced behind my Aunt to see my Uncle coming towards us.

I chuckled. "...and an Uncle who was so silly he made all the kids in town laugh."

He smiled. "I had a dream about a family made up of an Aunt, an Uncle and a sweet little girl who was so good with the animals she was almost one herself!"

We all burst out laughing and all had to sit down to catch our breath. I smiled at them.

I have the best family!

After a minute, we all stood up and went about the duties of the day. We finished around noon and went inside to make lunch. I was setting the table when i heard a big gasp from the kitchen. I rushed over to see what was wrong.

When i got there my Aunt was looking inside the pantry. "Aunt Maddy? Whats wrong?" I peered over her shoulder. She was holding the flour scoop. The bag of flour was, unfortunately, completely empty.

She turned to look at me. "We're out of flour. I can't make bread without flour!"

I thought for a minute. "I could run up to town and get some more. I can take the little cart i usually use when getting groceries."

My Aunt frowned. "Are you sure you want to go all the way up there? I could send your Uncle."

I shook my head smling. "I can do it. I'll be back in about an hour." I went to the door and put my shoes on. Then i went to the barn to get the cart. Then i was on my way.

It took me about twenty minutes to get from the farm to town. When i got there i went straight to the store and bought more flour. As i was leaving i saw a big commotion at the center of town. I was curious to see what was going on and walked over to look.

I gasped and put my hand over my mouth. There, in the middle of a paddock, was a beautiful black horse. I could tell from all its jumping around and kicking it had to be a wild Mustang. It looked really scared as it tried to jump over the fence.

I saw there were a bunch of men and boys in the paddock with it. They were trying to tie it down so it wouldn't hurt itself. I gasped as i saw one of the boys whip it. I couldn't just stand there and watch so, i ran forward and jumped the fence. I grabbed the whip out of the boy's hand and threw it out of the paddock.

He turned and gaped at me. "What ya do that for?!" I glared at him. "That was a cruel thing to do! You hit him with that whip."

He rolled his eyes. "How else are we going to get it to go where we want it?" I shook my head. "You can't whip a horse like that!" He scoffed. "Like you could do any better. You're just a girl." I lifted my chin. "Fine. If i can get him to calm down then you will let me have him and the whole town will help me feed him."

He gave me a septic look. "How is a girl going to tame a Mustang in just a few minutes?"

I narrowed my eyes. "Do we have a deal or not?"

He shrugged and nodded. He told the rest of the guys the deal. They all got out of the paddock and looked at me expectantly. I smiled at everyone and turned back to look at the horse. He was eyeing me carefully. I walked over to him with my hand outstretched.

He took a step back and i heard all the men laugh. I ignored them and concentrated on the horse. I slowly approached him. He stayed where he was and leaned forward slightly to smell my hand. He lifted his head and came towards me. I could hear the crowd gasp in surprise.

He got close enough for me to reach my hand up and stroke his mane. He closed his eyes and cocked his back foot, indicating he was relaxed. I turned hack to all the bystanders watching.

"Well, i guess that means he's mine then. We also agreed that you all would pay his expenses." I walked over the the side of the paddock and picked up a rope. I went back to the horse and gently tied it around his neck.

"I expect his first bag of food to be delivered to my house before tonight." I said. Then i opened the door and lead him out of the paddock. I tied him to my cart and walked away in the direction of the farm.

I could hear everyone talking about 'how did a girl do that?' And 'do we really have to pay fkr the food and everything?' I smiled to myself. I had always wanted a horse but, we could never afford one. Now that i got him for free and the town will be payong for all his needs, i can! I was so excited!

I turned to look at the black Mustang. He was watching me closely, but not like he was afraid of me. Smiled and stopped to pet him. He leaned into my pet. I continued walking.

I was almost home when i tripped and fell. I landed on my knee and scraped it up badly. I wasted one to cry about things and stood up brushing myself off. I winced as i began walking again. I had taken only a few steps when all of a sudden I was lifted up into the air.

I gasped and tried to steady myself. I looked down and saw it was the black horse! He had picked me up and i was sitting on his back. I relaxed and leaned forward to hug him. He snorted as if to say, "Don't thank me. I was only doing what was right."

I sat up and put my fingers in his mane. He took a step forward and pulled the cart with him. We walked home together. Him pulling the cart and me riding his back.

When we reached the farm Aunt Maddy came running out. She looked really upset. "You said you would be home in an hour! Its been an hour and a half! And what is that your riding?!"

I giggled as she took a step back from the horse. "He was in a paddock and some guys were hurting him. I managed to calm him down and they said i could have him. They also said they are going to pay for food for him."

My Aunt looked surprised but, then she frowned. "Where are we going to keep him? I don't have any room."

I thought for a moment. "I could keep him in my room. I have enough space to tie him up and keep him there." My Aunt nearly choked. "But, he's so big and wouldn't he make the house smell?"

I shook my head. "I promise to groom him everyday and take him out so he can walk and stuff! Please say yes!" I made puppy dog eyes.

She was quiet for a second then she sighed. "Lets ask you Uncle. If he says its alright then i suppose." My face lit up. "Yes! Thank you, Aunt Maddy! I love you so much!" I jumped off his back and tied him to a post of the fence. Then we both went inside.

A few minutes later i was running out of the house. I ran over to the horse and untied him. I lead him back to the house and brought him to my room. My Uncle had said yes and so i was going to keep him with me.

I tied him to my bed amd sat down to look at him. He was completely black. Even his hoofs and eyes were black. He was the most beautiful horse i had ever seen. Even though he was a Mustang he was very clean. As i sat there admiring him i realized I hadn't named him.

I looked him over carefully. Then i knew what his name would be. "I'm going to name you Dark. Do you like that name?" He snorted and nuzzled my legs. I giggled. "Ok then. Your name is Dark. Lets start introductions, my name is Winter. Nice to me you, Dark." I smiled.

"Nice to meet you too, Winter."

I did a double take and stared at him. Did he just talk?! He looked at me innocently. I shook my head. Of course not! Horses don't talk! Thats impossible!

I stood up when i heard the doorbell. I left the room and came back with a big bowl of horse feed. I set it on the floor in front of him. "There you go. Are you hungry?" He looked at me then the food. He bent his head down and sniffed it. Then he toom a bite. He seemed to like it and continued to eat.

I watched him. When he finished i filled the bowl with water. He drank that and when he was done he looked up at me. I smiled and rubbed his neck. Thwn i remembered the flour was still in the cart. We had forgotten about it when the whole horse thing happened. I rushed out of the room, grabbed the flour out of the cart and gave it to my Aunt. Then we finally made lunch.
