Chapter 3

Here's yet another chapter of this awesome story!

He didn't like that Ara was trying to tell him what to do but for the sake of his plan, he temporarily followed her orders. He went all the way back home without even turning around but of course he'd go back once he retrieved his close to finished invention that he had yet to name. When Add got home, he was a bit surprised to see that his mother was awake. "Mother?" he said as he entered and saw her frantically searching for something.

"There you are!" she said with relief as she went up to him and pulled him into a hug. Add didn't dare pull away from her for he didn't quite remember the last time his mother had given him such affection. It took every bit of resistance he had not to cry right then and there. "You had me worried. I heard that sound and I came looking for you but you weren't here," she said. She seemed so distraught and Add would have cared if it were to stay that way, his mother actually caring for him.

On normal days, she'd want him out of her sight because of his resemblance to his father, the man that his mother stil loved but could no longer see. She often avoided, even neglected him so he practically took care of himself but it had not always been that way. When he was younger before they left their time period, she used to spend all of her spare time with him.

She was a nasod researcher as well, just like his father was, and she was often doing other work. When Add came to her, she would stop whatever she was doing and spend time with him. After they time traveled, she began to be overprotective of him until he got older. "You look too much like him. It's unbearable."  Those words haunted him all of the time. "Mother, you shouldn't worry so much about me. I'm fine," Add said.

She pulled away from him and his heart nearly shattered when he saw that she had almost cried. "What kind of mother would I be if I didn't worry about you?" she said with a slight smile. For a second, Add thought about staying just as Ara had instructed him to do but he didn't know how long his mother's mind would remain intact. She'd driven herself crazy in the past few years. The only person who knew of her true behavior was Ara Haan. Dynamo didn't necessarily count.

"I have to go now. There's something important that I need to do," Add said. "Hm? Well, don't be gone too long. Make sure to be back before dark," his mother said. Add gave a nod before turning to Dynamo who silently floated nearby. Dynamo likely understood everything that was taking place and had said nothing since their arrival. "Make sure my mother is well taken care of," Add instructed. He went to his room and retrieved his invention, the six objects floated to him upon activation.

He left his room to find his mother talking to Dynamo and her caring attitude still seemed to be intact. "I love you. Stay safe out there and be careful with those. I can tell that they're special," she said just before Add walked out. He froze in place and looked back at his mother. "Is everything okay? You seem sad," she said with slight confusion as he looked at her.

Add went back to his mother and hugged her. "No, I'm not sad. Everything's fine," Add said. His mother laughed at him before ruffling his hair. "Okay. If you say so," she said. Add let her go and headed out of the door, closing it behind him. He wiped away the few tears that he could no longer hold back before continuing on. He made his way back towards the village, using his invention to increase his traveling speed. The six pieces of nasod technology easily carried his weight.

They carried him effortlessly towards the place that he was sure everyone was. It was the perfect opportunity to test the new invention out and he could agitate Ara while doing so. He knew how much she hated it when he didn't listen to her. As he zoomed towards the battlefield though, he slowed to a complete stop when he saw what had become of it. Much of the bamboo forest that used to surround the village was gone and Add could see a majority of the fallen warriors.

For some strange reason, whatever had attack wasn't even visible from where Add stood. He only saw the aftermath as he slowly made his way out of the village. He would have taken another step forward if he hadn't seen the creature coming at him. He stepped back onto his nasod weapon and it maneuvered him out of the way just in time. He was about to try attacking it but someome else beat him to it. "Add what are you doing here? Get back into the village now!" Ryu Jin Haan said after taking down the creature that Add knew to be a demon.

He'd seen a few during his travels but never anywhere near the small village that he currently lived in. "I have to help. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself," Add said. "Are you crazy?! Those things wiped out more than half of our forces! The only reason that I'm not dead now is because Ara risked her life to take down those creatures that were shooting beams of death everywhere," Ryu Jin said. Ara, where exactly was she?

"Is she still alive?" Add asked. "I don't know but I'm not letting you go out there and look for her. I lost her brother and possibly even her. I am not losing anyone else that I know I can save," Ryu Jin said. Add ignored him though and sped off before he could do anything. He needed to get to Ara. If there was even a chance of her being alive, he had to save her from the terrible death that might await her. He could not lose anyone else.

Add had already lost a father that he never really knew, he had already lost a mother that was still there, but he would most certainly not lose a friend because friends are hard to come by. It was something his mother had told him long before she stopped caring about him. His nasod invention carried him above the remaining bamboo and he could now see all of the remaining warriors as well as the invaders. Ara was the only one not retreating but she was also the only one surrounded by enemies that seemed to be afraid to get close to her.

She was holding a spear out to keep them away with one hand and in the other, she cradled a glowing gem of some sort. The worst part was that she had a deep scratch wound across her back. One of them had no doubt attacked her. The one that seemed to be the leader of them all was watching Ara and must have been planning its own attack. Add needed to act quickly if he was going to save her but it wasn't Ara that they were after.

He rushed forward and delivered a nearly flawless high voltage attack on one of the demons. It fell before him and caught not only the attention of the others but also Ara's attention. She didn't say anything but shock was written all over her face. Unfortunately for the both of them, they weren't in the best of situations now. Not only had Add gotten every enemy eye on him but he'd also trapped himself within the ring of attackers that Ara had already been in.

"You idiot! I told you not to follow me!" Ara said as she turned her spear on a demon that had gotten too close for her comfort. "I came out here to save you. Shouldn't you be more grateful?" Add growled. "Not if we're now both about to be killed!" Ara grolwed back. Both of them had their weapons in a defensive stance and stood with their backs facing each other.

"What do you suppose we do? Negotiating doesn't seem to ne an option," Ara said, all bitterness fading from her voice. She was losing hope and Add could tell. "Actually, negotiation is very possible," a voice suddenly said. It had to have been some sort of trick for Add did not see any human anywhere near them. "It...it spoke," Ara said as she stared at the one that was, without a doubt, the leader of them all. "If you didn't have something of value right now, I would have killed you for you choice of words just now. I am Shadow Master and you two are pests," the leader said.

If Add had thought of some sort of back up plan, he would have made a quick reply to Shadow Master's insult but he stayed silent, making sure not to provoke the thing into killing them. "What do you want?" Add said as he too the chance of glaring behind him at Shadow Master. Neither he nor Ara dropped their defense even in the slightest bit. Thet couldn't afford to be attacked.

"You simple minded creatures disappoint me. I thought you would have noticed by now but I suppose not. I seek the energy source for this village. That thing in the little girl's hand," Shadow Master said. Add glanced at Ara as if asking if giving up the light el was an option and her expression gave a clear answer. Absolutely not, she seemed to say with her gaze. "And if we give it to you?" Add asked. "I assume you humams value your lives. Give us the shard and you might live," Shadow Master threatened.
