Going Home
"Welcome to T.J. Heart Hospital!"
It is located in Mayer Town, Iowa.
Emma stared at her paperwork tiredly. She worked 12 hour shifts back to back. She worked on the fifth floor. Emma got an internship for her last semester of college.
At age 20, she proved she loves to help people. She works with young children, whose families couldn't be there or take care of them. The hospital respected Emma's decision to continue her last semester for her second degree in writing once she finishes her internship.
"Good morning, Miss Emma!" Avery chirped. Avery always brought a smile to Emma's face. Avery got admitted for ongoing nosebleeds and passing out. She was born to a single parent who did drugs and smoke with other terrible people in their home.
"How are we feeling today?" Emma stands beside her, "any pain, new symptoms? Has the new medicine helped?" Emma began to check vitals, charts, and prescriptions. Emma felt Avery's IV bag.
Avery began to play with a stress ball. "Miss Emma, I'm scared." Avery leaned her head back.
Emma sees Avery shaking, her eyes rolled back. "Avery?" As there was no response, Emma called for a "code blue." Emma began CPR. "Come on, Avery!" She kept going as the curtain moved behind her.
"What happened?"
Emma gave the doctor intel. Once two nurses came in, they began the rival process. "CLEAR!" Carl shouts. He did this two more times. Avery's monitor flattening. "Time of death 3:50pm." Carl looked at the young girl, covering her up, and asked the nurses to call the family, then the funeral home.
Carl motioned for Emma to follow him. "What happened in there?" Carl asks. He knew her to be better. He grabbed her hand, forcing them into a backroom. Carl slapped Emma across the face. "Do we have an understanding?" He pressed his lips against hers.
Emma forced her head back in total disgust. "We can't do this." She cried. She never felt comfortable being alone with Carl anywhere.
Carl leaned closer to Emma, his lips next to her ear. He lowly reminds Emma of the power he holds as being above her in the workforce.
"We go down together."
The "we" always meant them. Carl could say no words to scare her and others. His harsh tone and words roam free in the workplace.
"Do "we" understand?"
"Yes."
Their pagers go off. Carl traced his thumb across Emma's check and chin. Carl walked down the hall to a patient coming out of surgery.
Emma scrambled behind the desk, crying. Any laying on the desk, now covered in small tear drops. No one treated her like a dumb girl before. She wiped away the tears once other workers began coming by with files. Emma learned she is low rank among the higher ups, this would be due to her just coming off interning and working with young patients.
"Emma? Did you hear anything I said?" Doctor Jett Ihr spoke loudly. "Emma, is it Carl again?" Jett trained Emma and is her mentor. He saw Carl for who he really is.
Jett composed himself and hugged Emma; giving comforting words to help her feel relaxed.
The hospital red alarm rang loudly, causing Emma and Jett to stand up abruptly.
All workers reported to the reception desk on every floor. Appearing on the wide screen tvs; a breaking news report blasted.
"Thank you for tooning in this evening. I'm Dana Barrare."
"And I'm Dahmer Bemnings."
The camera focused on Dana. "Tonight, we have major breaking news. A hospital north of Mayer is on fire. Police and emergency crews are on the scene. We turn now to Senior Reporter Ralph Green."
Soon, the view changed to Ralph standing out of range of a burning building. "Good evening, Dana and Dahmer. Just moments ago, this rural area hospital caught fire. Officers are unable to investigate until the fire is out." Ralph turned to the side to allow the camera to view the building.
It happened to be nearly gone. Flames are too strong for E.M. crews to get through or stop it.
"Oh my god." One of the female nurses gasped.
Jett shutter off the tv and clapped everyone around him back to reality. "I need Carl, Emma, Sara, Kole, and Bane to meet in the AA room now." He watched everyone not called, head back to paitents.
"What the hell, Jett."
"You said we'd be safe."
"Is it happening again?" Carl grunts, "you better explain."
Emma stood close to Jett. She whispered that they couldn't stay in the town. Hospitals over the past 20 years have suffered loss and disappeared.
Twenty years ago was when it all started.
March 29,
North of Mayer, Iowa. Mayer population of 5,000. Mayer was founded in 1880. Mayer named after founding father Doolet Chord Mayer. Dooley marched over thousands of miles. His final steps led him to an unclaimed land. His beloved dog Chucky and his wife Marabelle helped him. Three years later, two hospitals had been built, one in town, the other north of the town.
In 1999, the first tragedy happened. Half of the north of Mayer burned. The cause of the fire never determined, bodies recovered only by bones. No suspects found. No evidence recovered.
Some considered it an accident. Mayer first official cold case.
Dooley own ancestor 20 years later lived in Mayer.
His legacy plasted throughout the whole town. The small library holds a statue of Doolet. In history books and records; they accuse the burning of the hospital a curse. A curse every twenty years.
Dooley Mayer, gone, loved, cursed a town.
Those words engraved on his tombstone. No picture of him or mention of his family.
In 2000, the curse made top history.
It all happened on November 24th. The eve of Thanksgiving, the hospital fully packed. A multi car crash, four miles pile up. The hospital is taking in patients, only to be caught in the situation themselves; unable to get past debris and smoke.
Layr suffered a fire on a month prior. The fire destroying the kitchen, third, and fourth floors. The pile-up consisted of six families, college students coming home from college, two emergency crews, and seven semis. Layr is in the middle of recovery and only open for highly injured persons.
At the three hour mark...
The entire hospital was gone.
Now, twenty years later, could the curse take another.
Jett sprung into a backroom. He ensured he was almost alone, as someone came in a few seconds later.
"Go away, this matter from before is over."
"Is it, though?"
"Carl?" Jett whispered. "Go away, Carl, you know you have paitents." Jett did his best to rush out the door. Both men broad and muscle struggle against each other. While the struggle came to an end, the door locked them inside.
"Nice going." Carl growls. Carl stared for a moment in his own head.
The two men stared in silence. Two men, one locked door.
"Any ideas?'
"Run towards the door. It'll cause a thud." Jett sat baxk; against the shelf. "Let me know how it goes." He felt Carl's glare and was pushed forward.
"We do this together, Doc."
They slowly backed up until they hit the shelf.
"On three. One."
"Two."
"THREE!"
Thud. Falling nearly on each other, the men groan in pain.
"I think I'm gonna be sick."
"Shut it."
7pm
Emma opened the closet door. Carl and Jett lay out on the floor asleep. Emma looked closer to see blood beneath one of them.
"Oh my god." She began looking for a pulse as Carl slowly came to. "Carl, Jett, can you hear me?"
A firm grasp took Emma by suprise. The person pulled Emma away, dragging her into an office. Emma had let out a cry. Emma watched the person roughly pull his weight against her.
"What are you doing?" She pushed them away.
"Fulfilling destiny."
"Who are you?" She felt, his hand cover her mouth, silencing her.
In the light of the room, Emma saw the person fully.
The man smiles wickedly.
"You!" She gasped.
