Chapter 4

"We need to get out of here," Journey said urgently. "We can't stay near an active volcano."

They turned to retrace their steps, but the path behind them had changed, the forest closing in and obscuring their way back. The rumbling grew louder, and the heat intensified, sweat trickling down their faces.

"We're trapped," Max said, his voice filled with fear.

Journey clenched her fists, determination shining in her eyes. "We have to find another way out. There has to be a way to Thunder Cove from here."

Journey and Max pressed forward, their pace quickening as the heat from the volcano grew more intense. The forest around them seemed alive with unseen threats, the trees creaking and the ground trembling with every step. The smoke in the air thickened, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead.

"We need to find higher ground," Journey said, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "If we can get a better view, we might be able to find a safer path."

Max nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "Good idea. Let's hurry."

They climbed a steep incline, their legs burning with exertion. The rumbling beneath them grew more pronounced, and the air shimmered with heat. Journey's heart pounded as they reached the top of the rise, hoping to spot a way out of their predicament.

From their vantage point, they could see the volcano in the distance, its peak spewing ash and smoke into the sky. Rivers of molten lava snaked down its sides, cutting through the landscape like fiery veins. The sight was both awe-inspiring and terrifying. Journey scanned the area, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a narrow ravine leading away from the volcano. "There!" she pointed. "That ravine looks like it might lead us away from the danger."

Max followed her gaze and nodded. "Let's go. We don't have much time."

They descended the hill quickly, their feet slipping on the loose rocks. The ground continued to shake, and the roar of the volcano grew louder. As they reached the entrance to the ravine, a deafening explosion echoed through the air, followed by a shower of ash and debris.

"Go, go, go!" Journey shouted, pushing Max forward. They sprinted into the ravine, the walls of rock rising high on either side of them. The narrow passage offered some protection from the falling ash, but the heat was still oppressive. Journey could feel the ground beneath them getting hotter, the soles of her shoes nearly burning with each step.

"We have to keep moving," she urged, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "We can't stop now."

The ravine twisted and turned, leading them further away from the immediate danger of the volcano. But the path was treacherous, with loose rocks and uneven ground making every step a challenge. Journey's mind raced, trying to remember the details of her father's map and the clues that would lead them to Thunder Cove.

As they rounded a bend in the ravine, they came to an abrupt halt. In front of them was a sheer rock face, blocking their path. Journey's heart sank as she looked up at the towering obstacle.

"What now?" Max asked, his voice filled with despair.

Journey took a deep breath, refusing to let fear take over, "We climb."

They began their ascent, carefully finding handholds and footholds on the rough surface. The heat from the volcano made the rock almost too hot to touch, but they pressed on, driven by the need to escape.

They got to the top of the large cliff, hands red and burning. The lava spewed from the volcano in Ember Canyon, and lava flowed underneath them in the ravine below.

Journey and Max tried to catch their breath when Journey heard... Barking? She looked and over on a rock was a chocolate-colored puppy. Journey gasped and immediately got up.

"What are you doing?!" Max argued.

"Saving that dog" Before Max could protest, Journey grabbed a vine and used it like a grappling hook. She slid down the side of the cliff. She held her arms out for the dog, "come on boy, c'mere" she called.

The dog as if on command, jumped into her arms, and with Max's help Journey and their newfound friend made it back onto the cliff safely.
