I woke up to the smell of Darry cooking eggs. It smelled so good. I walked into the kitchen. "Hey Annika. You hungry?" Darry asked. "Yeah a little bit." I told him as i walked over to him. "I hope you like eggs then." He said with a smile. "Sounds great." I said looking at him. God was he handsome. I never thought like that what is he doing to me? I'm a hard person to get through to let alone making me feel the way Darry is making me feel right now. "What time do you plan on going to the courthouse?" Darry asked. "I don't know. Maybe about noon." I said. "Where's johnny?" I asked. "He went home to get you some stuff. Said he would be back in about half an hour." Darry said putting some eggs on a plate and handing them to me. "Thanks Darry." I told him sitting down at the table and eating the eggs. "Your welcome Annika." Darry said getting some chocolate cake out of the fridge. Johnny walked in the door about that time. "Here Annika here is some stuff for you." Johnny said handing me a bag. "Thanks johnnycake." I said taking the bag and walking to the bathroom to change. Johnny put a black dress in the bag for me to wear with a pair of heels. I put them on and walked out of the bathroom while pulling up my hair. "Johnny why did you give me a black dress and heels?" I asked walking into the kitchen where he was at. "Darry said bring you something a little more formal." Johnny said stuffing his hands in his pockets. "Oh that works. But its been forever since i wore this dress." I said thinking about the last time i wore that dress. I looked up and saw Darry looking at me. I don't think he knew i caught him. Just then Steve and two-bit came in the door like a heard of elephants. "Wow!" Steve said walking into the kitchen. Johnny just glared at him. "Thanks Steve." I told him. I did fill out the dress pretty good. Better then what I used to. "Johnny you got any grease?" I asked him. "Sorry Annie. Just used up the last of it this morning." Johnny told me using my nickname. "I got some." Soda said walking into the kitchen while putting on his dx shirt. He tossed me the can of hair grease. "Thanks." I said while opening it to put the grease on my unruly hair. "I'll go get ready Annika and we can go to the courthouse." Darry said walking to his room. "Slow down you two its only been a day." Two-bit said with a laugh. "Shut your trap two! I have to go sign papers and Darry offered to come with me." I said smacking two on the head. "Johnny is she always this mean?" Two-bit whined. "Honestly two I'm learning stuff about her i never knew. We are walking on new territory." Johnny told two-bit. "Are you crazy? She could be a serial killer!" Two-bit screamed. "Gosh i kill one girl who was after my man and I'm a killer." I said with a laugh the rest of the guys caught on with my joke and laughed. "You killed a girl?" Two-bit screamed. "No one really knows if i did it. Me and her were just having a civilized talk and she disappeared. Hey two you wanna take a walk?" I asked making the rest of the guys laugh. Dal walked in the door about that time. "What did i miss?" He asked sitting down on the couch. "Annika's a killer and I'm her next target!!!" Two-bit screamed. "What?" Dal asked with a laugh. "Nothing I'm just trying to freak him out." I said. "You mean that was all a joke?" Two-bit asked. "Yeah what else would it be? I may have gotten into it with the fuzz a few times but I'm anything but mean." I said with a slight smirk. "Annika  why are you wearing that dress anyway?" Dal asked. "I'm going to the courthouse to sign some papers." I said. "Annika you ready to go?" Darry asked. "Yeah I'm ready to go." I said. "Soda. Steve. You're gonna be late for work!" Darry said leading me out the door. "Annika are you excited?" Darry asked me with a smile after we pulled out of the driveway. "I think I'm more nervous than anything. I don't want to mess up." I told Darry. It was the truth i was nervous as I'll get out. "You will be fine. Besides if you ever need anything we will always be right there for you and Johnny both." Darry said reassuringly. "Thanks Darry. I just really don't want to do something I'll regret." I told him. "Why your a smart, beautiful, young women. You can do anything you set your mind to if you wanted it bad enough." Darry said looking over at me. He pulled into the parking lot of the courthouse. We both got out of the truck and walked in. I walked to the lady at the front desk. "Hello. I'm Annika Cade. I'm supposed to come here today to sign some papers." I told the lady at the front desk. "Yes. Annika Cade. Come with me." She said getting up from her seat. Me and Darry followed her to a small office. "Ms. Stoner will be in here in a few minutes." The lady from the front desk said. Darry and
I had a seat. I think he could tell i was nervous. "It'll all be ok." He told me. The door opened and Ms. Stoner walked in. "Hello. Ms. Cade. Who is this with you?" She asked. "This is Darrel Curtis. He is one of my friends." I said confidently because he was by my side. "Ok Ms.Cade i just need you to sign these papers regarding your brother. It basically says that you are his legal guardian. And are responsible for and will take care of him at all times." She said handing me a paper and a pen. I signed the paper and she went on talking about some other stuff. "Ms. Cade i must ask. Do you have a job to help support you and your brother?" Ms. Stoner asked when she was done with everything else she was talking about. "No ma'am I don't. I am working on getting one though." I told her. "Listen i will have to come to the address listed in a month and check on how you and your brother are doing. I have to make sure you are able to support the both of you." She said. "Annika. I like you. I don't wanna see you and your brother split up like i have seen many families. I was just like you when i was your age. I'm gonna help you out a little bit ok. I want you to babysit my kids Friday night. I will pay you 20 dollars an hour. Ok." Ms. Stoner continued. "Sure." I said. "I live two blocks away from the dx. I will meet you there Friday night at 6. Thats all i need you for today." Ms. Stoner said getting up. Darry and i followed her out the door. We said goodbye and left the courthouse. "Annika this is good she is gonna help you out. This is great!" Darry said with a smile as soon as we got in the truck. "I know. She seems so nice. I just don't want to disappoint her. I cant believe she wants me to baby sit her kids on Friday night." I said. "You can do it Annie. It's ok that i call you Annie right?" Darry asked. "Of course you can call me Annie. We better get back to the house and tell johnny the good news!" I said. We drove home. The only thing i could think of the whole way home was how Ms.Stoner said she was once like me. In the same position i am.
