JD Characters #5
Imagine you and the JD Characters are going to the dentist.
You had the apartment all to yourself for two weeks while your two roommates were away on their honeymoon as they got married recently. Normally, you like to have the place to yourself, but two weeks felt like a long time, so you decided to invite four of your friends, the JD Characters, to stay with you so that you could have some company around. It was gonna be fun to have your friends, Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Gilbert Grape, and Mort Rainey stay with you.
You've known your friends ever since you met them at a local grocery store when you saw Edward by himself, struggling to get a jar of pickles off the shelf and you helped him out once you saw that he had scissors for hands. Afterwards, you stayed with him since you found out that he wondered off until he was reunited with Gilbert, Willy, and Mort. At first, you thought all four of the gentlemen were relatives as they looked oddly similar facial-wise, but you find out that they're just friends and they respectively call themselves the JD Characters as there are other friends of theirs that live elsewhere, whereas the four of them live in your local town. You and the JD Characters instantly found shared many interests with each other, where you all eventually became friends.

It was around the evening as you finished making meatloaf, peas, mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob for dinner. After you got the table set up, you called out, "Dinner's ready!" Then, Edward and Mort showed up around the corner and sat at the table. "It smells great, (y/n)." Edward commented. "Thank you, Edward." You said, as you sat at the end of the table, next to Edward so that you could help feed him. "Ah, corn on the cob. I like it." Mort said, while he was eyeballing it. "Where's Willy?" I asked. Edward and Mort shrugged in response. "Hello!" Willy said, appearing out of nowhere. "Where were you, Willy?" You questioned. "I was...fixing my hair in the bathroom, (y/n)." Willy answered, even though you could tell that he was lying.
Then, at the perfect moment, Gilbert walked inside from the front door. "Hi, everyone. Sorry I'm late." He said, as he took a seat at the table. "No. Not at all. We were just getting started with dinner, Gilbert." You told him. "Nice! Perfect timing to back from my dentist appointment. My tooth is no longer chipped!" Gilbert responded, pointing to his now smoothed front tooth. "It looks great, Gilbert. The dentist did a good job on it." You complimented. Unbeknownst to you and the others, Willy rolled his eyes when the word 'dentist' was brought to his attention. "Well, now that everyone is here, let's eat!" You said, and, then, you plated up some food for yourself and Edward, followed by Gilbert, Mort, and Willy.
As you were feeding Edward a piece of meatloaf, you asked, "How's the food?" "Delicious, (y/n)." Gilbert answered, as he continued eating some mashed potatoes. "I like this meatloaf. You should make it again some time, (y/n)." Edward said, with a smile. "I will definitely keep that in mind, Edward." "The corn on the cob is so good. Next time, I'll bring some of my own over for dinner. I know I plant the best." Mort mentioned, as he finished devouring his corn on the cob. "That's, uh, very generous of you, Mort." You responded, skeptically, from the way he said it.
When you looked at Willy, you noticed that he hadn't eaten anything and he was touching the meatloaf with his fork. "You haven't touched your food, Willy. Are you hungry?" You asked, making the other three look at him. "Oh. Yes, I am, (y/n). I'm just...taking my time to eat." Willy answered, as he took a tiny scoop of mashed potatoes and ate them, with a pained expression on his face. He whimpered quietly, but you all could clearly hear it. "You okay, Willy?" Gilbert asked. "You look like you're in pain." Mort added. "Nonsense. Look. I'm gonna eat this delicious food." Willy said, trying to sound convincing, as he took his corn on the cob and took a big bite of it.
The next thing you all know, Willy cried out in pain with the corn still in his mouth. "Willy, what's wrong?" You asked, sounding concerned. He set down the cob, took a napkin, and spat out the corn on the napkin before he answered, "I can't take it anymore. The back of my jaw hurts, (y/n). It doesn't hurt too much when I talk, but I open my mouth a little wider, just like when I tried to eat, it hurts more. That's the real reason why I was in the bathroom." "Why does it hurt?" Edward asked. "Because I've been feeling four new teeth growing in the back of my mouth for a while and my jaw and my gums have been aching since then." Willy said.
Once he said that four teeth were growing in the back of his mouth, that's when you realized why he was in pain. "Willy, those are your wisdom teeth coming in. That explains why you're in pain. They're causing problems." You told him. "What are wisdom teeth?" Edward asked. "It's when you get an extra set of teeth that come in when you get older and most of the time they need to be removed because they can cause problems with your jaw." Mort explained. Edward moved his scissor hands up to his face a little as he seemed a bit frightened by the thought of having his teeth removed.
"How long has it been hurting you?" Gilbert asked. Willy was thinking about it until he pulled his flash-card size calendar out and looked at it for a moment until he answered, "Right here. About two weeks ago." "Weeks?!" You, Gilbert, and Mort exclaimed, in unison. "You've been in pain for that long?" Mort questioned. "It didn't start off painful when I first noticed something different in the back of my mouth. But as time went on, it became more painful and I thought it would go away on its own, but it hasn't." Willy said. "Why didn't you tell any of us?" Gilbert asked. "Because I didn't want you all to worry and I thought it wasn't a big deal." "It is a big deal, Willy. Look what happened to you just now when you took a bite of that corn on the cob. It's getting worse. I think it's best to schedule a dentist appointment for you immediately." You said.
But once you said the word 'dentist', that's when Willy's violet-colored widened. "No! I'm not going!" He said, immaturely, crossing his arms. "Willy, you have to go to the dentist!" You responded. "Absolutely not, (y/n)! I'm not setting foot in a dentist office!" "Why, Willy? You worried the dentist is gonna take out all your teeth?" Mort questioned, while joking at the same time. "Can that happen?" Edward asked, sounding more frightened, with his scissor hands closer to his face. "Of course not, Edward." You told him, while you placed your hand on his shoulder and comforted him. "But it can happen." Gilbert muttered, a smirk, even though you could clearly hear him. You turned to Gilbert and whispered, harshly, "Shut up, Gilbert!" "Why can't you do it, Willy?" Edward asked. "Because I don't want to go through the same thing again when I was with my father." Willy answered.
Gilbert, Mort, and Edward were confused, but you knew what he was talking about when he told you about it some time ago. "Are saying that you don't want to go because you're worried that the dentist will be the same as your own dentist father?" You questioned. "Yes. Exactly my point." Willy answered, confidently. "Your father's a dentist?" Gilbert asked. "Yes." Willy answered. "You guys didn't know that?" You asked. "No." Gilbert, Mort, and Edward answered, in unison.
"Like what did he do to you?" Edward asked. "He was very overprotective of my teeth when I was a child. He made me wear these braces that looked like a torture device so I wouldn't have any candy or even chocolate. Kids made fun of me and every Halloween, whenever I got candy, he would do the same thing, lecture me on why candy is bad for your teeth and, then, he would throw them into the fireplace while I watched them burn into nothing but ash afterwards. That was until I found a piece of chocolate that survived the fire and even if the braces on, I still bit into it and it changed my life for what I am today. That's why I ran away from my father and never set foot in a dentist office." Willy said. "Never heard of braces like that." Mort mentioned, furrowing his eyebrows in confusion.
"That's your excuse for not wanting to go to the dentist?" You questioned, crossing your arms. "Yes. It was traumatizing for me, so that's exactly why I'm not going." "Just because you had a traumatic childhood with your father, doesn't mean that you can't go. Maybe your father was looking out for you because you're his son and he probably thought he was doing what was best for you, even though I will admit that you probably wouldn't be the best chocolatier in the world today if you hadn't tried that piece of chocolate a long time ago. But the point is, you can't automatically think that all dentists are like your father, Willy. They're just making sure that your teeth are in good health." You told him.
"(y/n)'s right. I've had so much stress for so long and it was kind of effecting my jaw, so I was recommended braces to get things straightened out. I'm getting them next month and I trust their recommendation." Mort persuaded. "And I had a chipped tooth before, but now you can't even tell it was there after it was smoothed out." Gilbert added his persuasion. "You see, Willy. There's nothing to be afraid of. Besides, the longer you wait, the more intense the pain will be than what you're experiencing right now. So, will you please do us all a favor and let us take you to the dentist?" You asked.
Willy was deep in thought for a moment. But, then, he finally answered, "I guess I could give it a try. My mouth does really hurt." You and the other three smiled in satisfaction after hearing his response. "Perfect! I'll call them and see if I can schedule an appointment as soon as possible. I should also add an appointment for Edward as well." You said. "Me?" Edward spoke. "Just for a cleaning, Edward. Nothing to worry about." You told him. "But I'm still gonna prove that it's traumatizing to go there. You'll see." Willy said.

"You see? I was right. It's been too long and poor Edward is probably getting tortured to death." Willy spoke out of nowhere, while he, along with you, Gilbert, and Mort were sitting in the waiting room at the dentist office after you were lucky enough to schedule an appointment for Willy and Edward two days later. "Willy, it's only been half an hour." Gilbert said, while he was reading a magazine. "Which is the average time for someone to get a cleaning done." Mort added. "You don't know that for sure." Willy replied. "Calm down, Willy. You gotta pull yourself together." You said. "I can't help it, (y/n). I can't imagine how traumatized Edward must be by the time he walks out that door." Willy said.
Then, at the perfect moment, Edward walked into the waiting room, with a smile and lollipop in his mouth and female nurse with him. "All right, Edward. Your friends are waiting for you and don't forget your goody bag." She said, kindly, as she helped place the goody bag on one of his scissor hands. "Thank you." Edward said, sweetly, and, then, she walked away and he came over to you and the others. "How did it go, Edward?" Mort asked. "Did they torture you?" Willy added, making Gilbert and Mort roll their eyes. "No. They were very nice. They cleaned my teeth and there were no problems at all. They gave me a goody bag and a lollipop because I was a very good patient." Edward responded, happily, showing his brightly cleaned teeth.
"Aw, Edward. That's wonderful." You said, as you stood up and gave him a hug. "I love the dentist, (y/n). Can I come back again soon?" Edward asked. You giggled at his question as it was very cute of him as he usually would be daily. "Uh, sure, Edward, although technically you have to wait six months for your next appointment." You said, as you helped him sit down in between Gilbert and Mort. "So, do you feel traumatized for life, Edward?" Gilbert asked, sarcastically. "Not at all, Gilbert." Edward answered. "Well, that's good to know." You said, looking at Willy, who was flabbergasted at Edward's experience.
"Willy." You heard a nurse call out. Willy felt like he swallowed a huge lump in his throat after he heard his name. "It's time, Willy." You told him. "I—I don't feel good about this." He said, frighteningly. "Relax, Willy. It'll be fine. I'll be with you the whole time." You said, as you held your hand out towards him. For a moment, he was hesitant, but, then, he finally took your hand, stood up from his seat, and you both followed the nurse to the back.
"So, what does this stringy thing do?" Edward asked, as he was looking through his goody bag. "That's floss, Edward. You put it between your teeth and it removes the plaque when you move it." Mort explained. "Oh. Could one of you maybe help me with it tonight?" Edward asked, with Gilbert and Mort looking at each other, as if they were about to argue.

After getting some x-rays done and thoroughly examining the four new grown teeth in the back of Willy's mouth, your dentist, Dr. Sutherland, came back with the results. "So, Willy, from looking at the x-ray here, it looks like all four of your wisdom teeth are positioned in a mesial impact. In other words, all four teeth are angled towards the front your mouth and are severely impacting against the molar teeth, which is why the pain you're experiencing is growing intense." He explained, while he was pointing out the location of each wisdom tooth on the x-ray image.
"So, what happens now?" Willy asked. "Well, judging by the severity of the impaction and the pain you're enduring, I'm gonna schedule an appointment with one of my colleagues to get your wisdom teeth removed immediately." Dr. Sutherland answered. Willy, who's been holding your hand the whole time, squeezed it so hard, that you nearly cried out in pain.
"Dr. Sutherland, would you please explain to Willy the expectations of the surgery before he breaks my hand?" You asked, straining from the pain. He chuckled and said, "There's nothing to worry about. You'll be put under anesthesia and your teeth will be numbed as well. Yes, you will experience pain and swelling for the first few days after the surgery, but that's normal as they're under the healing process and I'm sure (y/n) or whoever you live with will help take care of you. I will make sure that you're in good hands with the best oral surgeon once I reach out to him. Okay?" Willy thought about it for a few seconds until he nodded and simply said, "Okay." "Good. I'll be right back." Dr. Sutherland stated, and, then, he stepped out.
Once he was gone, Willy turned to you, with a nervous expression on his face. "How are you feeling, Willy?" You asked. "I'm so nervous, (y/n). I'm so nervous about the surgery and the pain that I'll have after it's done." He answered. "It's normal to feel nervous when it comes to having surgery, let alone in your mouth. But everything is going to be okay and I know Dr. Sutherland will find the best oral surgeon for you. Trust me. I experienced the same thing when I had mine taken out years ago. Like Dr. Sutherland said, it's normal to feel pain after the surgery." You told him.
Willy was deep in thought after you said all that. "Yeah. You're right, (y/n). Everything will be alright. I mean, this is surgery, not getting braces like the one I got when I was a kid. I guess this whole time, I've been nervous not because of the surgery, but it was me getting stuck in the past of my childhood and not letting go of it." He said. You placed your hand on his shoulder for comfort and said, "I understand how you feel, Willy. But you don't need to worry about that anymore. You're gonna be alright. Plus, the guys and I will help you while you're recovering. Come to think about it. If you end up getting scheduled early for the beginning of next week, it'll be perfect because you guys still have another week to spend time with me."
"Yeah. I like the sound of that and I like spending time with you. Thank you, (y/n), for calming me down and being in my life. You really are a great friend." Willy said, with a smile forming on his face and, then, he hugged you, with you hugging him back. "You're welcome, Willy, and I'm glad that I have you and the guys in my life too." You responded. "You don't think Gilbert and Mort will be any trouble when I'm recovering from surgery?" Willy asked. "Highly doubt it. But if they give you any trouble, I'll just threaten to take all their teeth out." You said, jokingly. "Please do." Willy replied, with you giggling afterwards.

Monday came for Willy's wisdom teeth removal as Dr. Sutherland was able to get availability from an oral surgeon at the earliest convenience. Willy was still nervous about it, but you kept telling him that everything was going to be fine. You and the other JD Characters waited in the waiting for over an hour and a half and still haven't heard an update on the progress. You had a feeling that it was taking longer due to having four wisdom teeth and the position that the impacted teeth were in that probably needed special removal. Then, the surgeon came around the corner in the waiting room and had let you all know that it was a complete success, making you and the JD Characters relieved.
"Are you sure he isn't dead?" Edward asked, innocently, while you all crowded around the still unconscious Willy. "Of course not, Edward. He's under the anesthesia." You told him. "Which makes it look like he is." Mort added. "If he were, does that mean we get his Chocolate Factory?" Gilbert questioned. "Guys, stop it. We're not getting into that and you both are confusing Edward." You said.
Then, you heard a groaning noise. You turned and saw Willy moving his head a bit before he fluttered his eyes open and had a blurry vision of who was standing in front of him. ""Wh-Where am I?" He asked, groggily and a bit muffled due to the gaze that were placed on the spots of where his wisdom teeth used to be. "You're at the dentist office, Willy. You just had your wisdom teeth removed." You explained to him, knowing what the effects of the anesthesia would do.
He blinked a few of times until he stopped when he saw a clear vision of the four of you and smiled, tiredly. "Aw. Good morning, my starshine friends. The Earth says 'hello'." Willy exclaimed, making you and Edward giggle. "Even when he's under anesthesia, he's still the same." Mort mentioned. "As I'll ever be and you're really weird, Mort." Willy replied, with a slight weak giggle, making Mort roll his eyes. "This is strange. I can't feel my mouth." Willy mentioned. "That's because they numbed your mouth, Willy." Gilbert said. "Oh. That explains it. I can still talk, yet I don't feel my mouth." Willy said. "At least that's a good thing." Edward said, innocently, making Gilbert and Mort look at him, with raised eyebrows.
"Are you ready to go home, Willy?" You asked. "Now that you've mentioned it, (y/n), yes." He answered, stretching a little bit. "Come on. We'll help you up." Gilbert said, and, then, you and Gilbert helped him stand up. You wrapped his right arm around your shoulders, while Gilbert did the same thing on the left side, so that Willy wouldn't fall down if he was too weak to walk and, then, the three of you walked out of the room, with Mort and Edward following behind them. "I'm so hungry." Willy mentioned. "I thought you were tired." Mort pointed out. "I am, but I'm still hungry." "How about a chocolate bar?" Edward offered. "Oh, Edward, he can't eat that. He has to eat soft foods for a while. How about some chocolate pudding instead?" You asked. "Mm. Yes. That actually sounds good. I want some chocolate pudding." Willy answered.
Before you all exited out of the dentist office, you felt Willy's head laying against your shoulder. "Thank you, (y/n)." He spoke. "For what?" You questioned. "For persuading me to go to the dentist. I was afraid before, but since you came along, you made me feel better. You really are a wonderful friend." He said. "You truly are, (y/n)." Gilbert said, with a wink at the end and Edward and Mort nodding in agreement. You smiled at them and gave Willy a side hug on his shoulder. "You're welcome." You responded.
